I’m a little surprised that the guys on the offense are leaving. Considering what Deboer has done of late, you’d think they might want to hang out and see what they could do.

Have you seen the Bama starting quarterback perform under pressure?

Washington's was substantially better and still got worked against Michigan.

It's not a stretch that a 18-22 year old says thanks but no thanks and opts for more of known situation.

Or nopes right on out for perceived green pastures.

I mean, the dude's a bit of a dork.  Great coach, yes, but I can easily see 18 year olds noping on out of there.

I stole your nope, but I wanted to credit you for the grin and great language.

Seems crazy to me that Bama didn't prepare for this and start working on a more robust NIL infrastructure. Did they really think nothing was gonna change after Saban left?

They tried but there's just not that kind of money compared to a lot of places. Alabama's place in the sun is over.

Being a helmet school is still going to carry some weight.  As much as the rest of the world wants to see y'all completely tank, you're still going to win a lot of games in the coming years.

Just probably not 8 out of 14 national championships, or whatever that crazy stat ended up being.  Sorry about that.

I agree and the larger playoff format will keep us relevant. But it won't be the same and I'm not sure the local proletariat will be able to handle it.

Any ideas where Tommy Rees might end up?

Looks like Cleveland Browns may hire Rees

"Former Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees is expected to land on his feet following Nick Saban's retirement. He is set to become the Cleveland Browns' tight ends coach a role in the "development" of the passing game, according to Zac Jackson of The Athletic. "

If I went to school with a kid named Ryan Grubb, he'd be regularly accused of eating grubs, either in the form of a brief poem, cheer, song or all three. But not by me. I was way too mature for shit like that

Sources confirm Alabama hiring Eron Hodges from TCU

DOUG SAMUELS       6 HOURS AGO

Eron Hodges has developed a reputation as a top figure in recruiting and personnel over the last several years.  He was at Purdue as the director of player personnel while new Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer was at Indiana as the Hoosier's offensive coordinator.

Now the two are set to work together in Tuscaloosa.  Sources confirm to FootballScoop that Hodges is joining the Crimson Tide staff as associate director of player personnel.

Matt Zenitz has shared the same.

Hodges leaves a role at TCU, where the position was designed to help him get more involved on the coaching side of things, as he held defensive analyst control responsibilities in addition to being the recruiting coordinator for the program.

Before leaving for the TCU opportunity, Hodges helped the Boilermakeres pull in the highest rating recruiting classes in decades.

Prior to landing the Purdue job, Hodges was assistant director of player personnel at Ohio State, where he quickly worked his way up in one season after starting as a recruiting staff analyst.

He brings coaching experience at Kent State, Valpo, and Saint Joseph's (D-II - IN) with him to the role.

Still expecting William Inge to come along to coach LBs.  Gonna be interesting to see if Chuck Morrell is willing to move to the southeast or maybe DeBoer realizes he has to upgrade that coaching position.

Took longer, but as predicted William Inge leaving Washington and rejoining DeBoer at  Bama to coach LBs...

Alabama has reportedly added Jay Nunez from Oklahoma to coordinator role

image.png.8266227618ec68cd1cfb10e20734bbfc.png

Nunez worked in an analyst role for the Sooners last season.

DOUG SAMUELS       16 HOURS AGO

Hours after we shared that Washington co-defensive coordinator William Inge was set to join Kalen DeBoer's staff, the Tide are set to add an Oklahoma staffer.

According to multiple reports tonight, Jay Nunez is leaving the staff at Oklahoma to join DeBoer in Tuscaloosa as special teams coordinator.  Nunez worked in a senior special teams analyst role for the Sooners.

Before joining the staff in Norman prior to the 2022 season, Nunez spent five seasons on the staff at Eastern Michigan in a variety of roles.

Nunez reportedly worked in the increasingly modern version of a special teams role at Oklahoma, where he oversaw all special teams units, but because he had an analyst role he was unable to coach them on game day. That responsibility falling on the assistant coaches, as assigned by Brent Venables.

Sources: Seahawks hiring Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator

image.png.1537a68ed55bc605c9be79c741ecb938.png

The Seattle Seahawks are hiring former University of Washington offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb to the same position on new coach Mike Macdonald's staff, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and Pete Thamel on Friday.

Grubb had accepted the Alabama offensive coordinator job after spending the past two seasons at Washington under former Huskies and current Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer, coordinating a pass-heavy offense that ranked sixth in the FBS in yards per game (487.0) and sixth in scoring (36.7) in that span. With Michael Penix Jr. at quarterback, the Huskies led the FBS in passing yards per game (355.8) the past two seasons and ranked 15th in dropback percentage, calling passing plays 61.8% of the time.

Grubb was set to be Alabama's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, having followed DeBoer to Tuscaloosa when he was hired in January after Nick Saban retired. Washington had passed on hiring Grubb as DeBoer's replacement.

Instead, Grubb will return to Seattle for his first job in the NFL. He becomes the third coordinator hired to Macdonald's Seahawks staff. They have tabbed Jay Harbaugh to run special teams and Aden Durde to coordinate their defense, though Macdonald will call plays on that side of the ball. Seattle has also hired Leslie Frazier as assistant head coach.

Grubb is expected to bring Alabama offensive line coach Scott Huff with him to the Seahawks, sources told ESPN. Huff coached Washington's offensive line for the past seven years, including the past two with Grubb. Last season, the Huskies' offensive line won the Joe Moore Award as the top line in college football.

At Washington, Grubb also served as the Huskies' quarterbacks coach, working closely in that role with Penix, who threw a combined 67 touchdown passes in 28 games over the past two seasons. Penix finished runner-up in Heisman Trophy voting in December.

That connection will fuel speculation about Seattle drafting Penix, who is widely projected to be taken in the first two rounds. The Seahawks own the 16th overall pick, no second-round pick and an extra third-rounder.

Geno Smith is under contract for two more seasons and $47.5 million, though he might not be a lock to remain Seattle's starter after an up-and-down 2023 season. That total includes a $12.7 million base salary for 2024 that will become fully guaranteed if Smith is still on Seattle's roster on Feb. 16.

Grubb replaces Shane Waldron, who served as Seahawks' offensive coordinator for the past three seasons and was hired to the same position with the Chicago Bears in January after Seattle fired Pete Carroll.

Grubb had worked with DeBoer in four previous stops and served as offensive coordinator for all four programs: Washington, Fresno State, Eastern Michigan and Sioux Falls. He began his college coaching career in 2005 at South Dakota State, working with wide receivers and running backs, and has also coached the offensive line and quarterbacks during his nearly two decades in the college ranks.

While Grubb has never worked in the NFL, Macdonald said during his introductory news conference that NFL playcalling experience wasn't a prerequisite for his offensive coordinator in Seattle.

"It's not near the top of the list," Macdonald said. "We're looking for the right person to come in here and build this thing, so we want someone that's open-minded, that has a growth mindset, that can connect with their players and build a system that's unique to the Seattle Seahawks, that's going to live here a long time and he's going to be the one spearheading it."

The Seahawks had requested an interview for their offensive coordinator vacancy with Detroit Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand, according to the MMQB. Former UCLA coach Chip Kelly and former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson were also among their interviews, sources told ESPN. The New York Giants blocked a request to speak with offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who had previously interviewed twice for Seattle's head-coaching vacancy.

This could get better if bammer follows oSU's lead and somehow hires a sitting G5 head coach to be their new OC.

Confirmed...  OL coach gone too (pretty sure Scott Huff is also PK's close friend)

Alabama’s Scott Huff follows Ryan Grubb to Seattle Seahawks as offensive line coach: Report

Story by Matt Stahl, al.com • 14h

Alabama football will be looking for an offensive line coach. Again.

According to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Scott Huff, who had followed Kalen DeBoer to the Crimson Tide from Washington, is taking the same job with the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks. The news comes after Ryan Grubb, who had also briefly been at Alabama as offensive coordinator, reportedly accepted the OC job in Seattle.

Huff preceded DeBoer’s two-season tenure with the Huskies. He spent seven seasons as the offensive line coach for the Huskies. Huff built his group at Washington into a unit that won the 2023 Joe Moore Award, which goes to the nation’s top offensive line.

Before joining the Huskies, Huff spent the majority of his coaching career at Boise State. He coached from 2006 to 2016 with the Broncos.

Prior to Boise State, Huff had been a graduate assistant with Arizona State. He played his college football at Boise State as well.

The Huff defection leaves DeBoer with two on-field positions to fill on his new Crimson Tide staff. The first chance fans will have to peek in at what the new coach is building will be April 13, when Alabama hosts its annual A-Day spring game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

DeBoer loses another bama guy...

Long-time Alabama staffer headed to NFL

After six seasons on Nick Saban's Crimson Tide staff, George Banko getting NFL spot

JOHN BRICE             14 HOURS AGO

George Banko, an Alabama graduate who worked on Nick Saban's staffs from his undergraduate days to several seasons as a defensive analyst, is exiting Tuscaloosa, Alabama, sources tell FootballScoop.

Banko, set to be retained by new Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer after DeBoer was hired to replace the retired Saban, is accepting a post on Dan Quinn's new Washington Commanders staff in the NFL, sources told FootballScoop Wednesday.

Set to become a defensive quality control coach for the Commanders, Banko had carved a reputation around the Alabama program for his willingness to take on any task as he worked through a variety of roles to become one of the Tide's top defensive analysts.

Banko will be working in Washington, D.C., for new coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. -- an Alabama native and Auburn graduate.

It's hard following a legend.  And if I was Saban, not sure that I would do much to help DeBoer at Bama either...

I assumed Nick would have a suggestion for his successor. I figgered he'd take a shot at getting Sark, and at least one early report mentioned that Sark was the first call and first "Honored, but no, thanks".

They tried Sark passed, as did Mike Norvell. That was the scuttlebutt via backdoor channels.

Kalen DeBoer fills Alabama offensive line vacancy with FBS veteran

Instead of joining the Baylor staff, Chris Kaplovic will now partake in the new era of Alabama football.

ZACH BARNETT         34 MINUTES AGO

Technically speaking, Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer has not made an outside hire yet. More than a month into the job, DeBoer has only formally announced the retention and promotion of Freddie Roach (associate head coach/defensive line coach) and Robert Gillespie (assistant head coach/running backs coach).

In reality, DeBoer has filled out his first staff, and now made his first replacement hire.

Baylor offensive line coach Chris Kaplovic will serve as the Crimson Tide's offensive line coach, according to a report from ESPN on Monday.  Kaplovic replaces Scott Huff, who joined DeBoer from Washington and then joined offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb in returning to Seattle to take equivalent roles with the Seahawks.

Tight ends coach Nick Sheridan is expected to serve as offensive coordinator, which leaves DeBoer needing to fill one additional spot on his offensive staff.

Kaplovic was set to join Dave Aranda's Baylor staff this fall after spending the past four seasons as the assistant head coach, run game coordinator and offensive line coach at Michigan State. He has coached offensive lines for multiple universities across nearly a quarter century: Alabama State, Missouri State, Southern Miss, North Carolina and Colorado.

Alabama completes staff with addition of Group of Five coordinator

DOUG SAMUELS          8 HOURS AGO

After reports shared the addition of Chris Kapilovic as offensive line coach earlier this morning, Kalen DeBoer and the Tide are set to complete their staff with the addition of a Group of Five coordinator.

Multiple reports today share that the Tide are set to hire Georgia Southern offensive coordinator Bryan Ellis as their tight ends coach.  The Eagles ranked among the top 30 nationally in completion percentage and passing offense while the receivers set a number of school records this past season.

In 2022, Ellis helped to lead an aerial attack that broke about every speakable passing record for the Georgia Southern program.

Ellis took over as offensive coordinator in Statesboro in 2022 after previously setting a number of records at Western Kentucky in three seasons there with the co-coordinator and offensive coordinator title while working with the quarterbacks and then inside receivers.

At WKU, the offense ranked second in scoring at over 44 points per game in 2021, and also ranked second nationally in total offense and first in passing yards per game.

Prior to his time with WKU, Ellis worked with the USC quarterbacks in 2018 after a season as an offensive assistant for the program.

He steps into the tight ends role vacated by Nick Sheridan, who moved to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach following the departure of Ryan Grubb, who left for the Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator opportunity.

The Tide's second reported hire of the day completes Kalen DeBoer's inaugural staff in Tuscaloosa.

DeBoer loses another Washington/Bama coach...

image.png.d5a7e2a35520d437276e9a8c846896b0.png

Monday evening, On3's Austin Price reported that Alabama's new linebackers coach William Inge will be headed to SEC rival Tennessee to take the place of former Volunteers linebackers coach Brian Jean Mary.

"BREAKING: Tennessee has replaced Brian Jean Mary with former Washington Co-Defensive Coordinator William Inge," Price writes.

Since former Washington head football coach Kalen DeBoer has arrived in Tuscaloosa, Ala., he's brought along many other Huskies staff members to help him with the Crimson Tide.

Like many of the new Tide assistants, on Feb. 5, DeBoer also brought Inge along from Washington, as he was the Huskies' defensive assistant.

Inge was hired by Washington as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach on Dec. 18, 2021. He reunited with Husky head coach Kalen DeBoer, having served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Fresno State the previous two years.

Inge helped pull the strings to one of the most exciting teams to watch on both sides of the field this past season and the Huskies' run to the College Football National Championship is indicative of that.

One other notable form of assistant coaching news that occurred on Monday was that Kane Wommack signed his deal to officially become Alabama's next defensive coordinator. In addition, Wommack is also designated as the inside linebackers coach, but Alabama will continue to look for a pure linebackers coach.

As the Tide now must reopen its search party to replace Inge, assuming pen goes to paper, Alabama will see him opposite its sideline on Oct. 19 in Neyland Stadium, Knoxville, Tenn.

Sources: Alabama, Kalen DeBoer make another major addition to Crimson Tide strength staff

Zach Mathers leaving Samford for assistant role in Tuscaloosa

Quote

Kalen DeBoer retained the highly regarded David Ballou atop the Alabama football strength program and plucked not only ascendant coaching star Kane Wommack to help run the Crimson Tide defense but also nabbed South Alabama strength coach Matt Shadeed as well.

Now, sources tell FootballScoop, Alabama and DeBoer are making an additional staff addition of significance.

Zach Mathers, most recently Samford's assistant athletics director for sports performance and a key cog on Chris Hatcher's Bulldogs staff, has accepted a role in the strength and conditioning/sports performance department at Alabama, sources told FootballScoop Wednesday afternoon.

Mathers has been heralded nationwide for his cutting-edge work in implementing information gleaned from data into tangible results.

In addition to his direct work with the Samford football program, Mathers also was in charge of what the university dubbed 'Project SAMson.'

The methodology for that program was to implement results from the data testing across all intercollegiate sports at Samford and not just the Bulldogs football team.

Mathers's work has been featured nationally in Sports Business Journal and Samford also previously touted his role in the unprecedented approach.

“Our number one goal in these areas is bigger, faster, stronger," Mathers said in a Samford publication, "while also keeping our athletes healthy and safe so they can play to the best of their ability. With the new technology and analytics, we will be able to see how the exercises our athletes do during training translates to their performance on the field."

The addition of Mathers is yet one more step closer for DeBoer to have a complete staff, both on and off the field. The Tide lost just-added linebackers coach William Inge to Tennessee this week and replaced a pair of departures of assistants to the NFL as well.
