this isn't a jerry pick, it's a marinelli pick.

Marinelli picks are even worse. Jerry will at least go after someone who has talent. Marinelli loves spare junk so when he inevitably fails year after year, he can lay claim he did the best he could with what he has and everyone pats this old fuck on the back. Dude sucks as bad as Linehan.

I wanted a S.  But I think the Rams showed us how we needed to be better inside.  Felt like it was gonna be him for a few days.

Probably would've taken a Safety but this is fine.

I like taking a talented DT early in the draft. I haven't really watched this guy, but your first pick isn't usually a great place to take a head case. Hopefully, he's more fiery and competitive than just an asshole.

Fuck this fraud. He's a huge reason this defense gets gashed when it matters but for some reason gets this credit when it isn't warranted. He should have left with Linehan. He loves these spare players so he actually isn't held accountable for failing with good players. That way he can keep hiding behind the mantra "he gets the most out of his guys". Fuck that.

We are still handcuffed to this old geezer and his love affair with these spare DT players.

By all account, this kid is perfect for the exact thing you are complaining about..He will help with run defense.

"This wasn’t a Rod Marinelli decision. This wasn’t a Jason Garrett decision. While both coaches might have been highly in favor of the Michigan star edge rusher, this was a team decision with McClay in favor of it."

sure there are misses but you can't ignore how they completely revamped the defense over the course of two years primarily by the draft.

I don't trust Marinelli picks at all. None. Taco was all his doing, too when TJ Watt was sitting right there. Someone take the keys away from this old man.

So was Demarcus Lawrence...Also TJ Watt is great..in a 3-4.

This was his Cons section on a scouting report. This is exactly what we already have too much of at DT and what killed us against the Rams.

Cons:
Gap discipline is poor. Often focused too much on getting up the field and less on maintaining and filling his gap. Gave up big plays in the running game due to the poor gap discipline. Inconsistent pad level leads to Hill getting turned and driven off the ball by stronger, more physical offensive lineman. Lacks a true pass rush plan at times which will lead to lack of consistency as a rusher. Struggled to the find the football at times, which would have helped bring up his sack and tackles for loss totals over his career at UCF. Struggles to anchor and spends more time on the ground than you’d like to see with a player of his upper and body strength. Career arch at UCF has been a interesting one. Was by far the best defensive player for UCF in 2018, but started only one game. Work ethic and character has been put in question by former coaches and scouts around the league.

So what's the word on Taco Charlton now??

There goes Thornhill to KC.

Unreal. He's so perfect for a huge need on this team. And we bypass him. Same shit as us drafting the spare Taco and left Watt to go to the Steelers. This front office has zero clue.

A safety wouldn't have helped against the Rams or pretty much any of our other loses last year. It's pretty clear the FO has decided not to invest resources in that position.

it's odd you're hung up on taco and completely ignoring every other guy starting on our defense who we drafted.  and did you not even read the article you posted?  taco wasn't a marinelli pick.

And neither will this pick. I don't have an issue with DT being picked, it's the one being picked. He's not 2nd round value. Also, he seems to be David Irving attitude with half the talent.

Whether or not safety would have helped against the Rams, it is a huge need for this team. Thornhill was regarded as a great pick to get all offseason. He's right there to get. And we pass. Because Marinelli. A guy that needs motivation and coaching? We have too many of those.

they've been super successful with that philosophy too

When's the last time we had a DT that wasn't a spare, especially athletically? Be nice to have a guy who can routinely get in the backfield.

A rookie second round safety is very likely going to take a few years to contribute and learn the defense.

This also has to do with finally having one really good and one elite DE coming off the edge.

that's the thing with marinelli-  the key to his defenses are a DT who plays under tackle and pushes the pocket from there.  marinelli defenses have no use for run stuffing DTs.

That's kind of a point, too. Linehan was booted because his offense proved to not work. So why is Marinelli still here? He's had enough time. His defenses are not up to par when it comes to nut cutting time. TJ Watt is not here because of Marinelli because he was not a right fit on what we like to do. Maddening.

Over the last years, we have been using a lot of resources on defense. When does Marinelli get held accountable?

we have a completely new defense from two years ago.  we are the youngest defense in the league.  oh, and this is how our defense ranked last year.

total yards  7th

pass 13th

rush 5th

points 6th

what issue do you have with our defense?

I'm not sure Marinelli has pick authority over Kris Richard.

I also like the pick. This dude makes a ton of tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Pressure up the middle is becoming more and more important with the quick passing game.

This guy will blow up the timing of a lot of plays . Now when you have a push in the middle and on the outside with DLaw the safeties will get better

CBS Sports likes the pick

DT was the glaring need. They should have taken the best one available regardless of value. This was a deep DL class so I hope this kid pans out. That was the only reason I didn’t completely lose hope in trading away the 1st round pick.

Lol Vic, you’re being ridiculous. At what point are you going to realize the draft is a crapshoot, and now for the most part, we do it better than 90% of the teams in the nfl. They’ve liked this guy for a while now. It’s not just a “Merrinelli” pick. That’s a ridiculous take. It’s a Will McClay pick, it’s a Kris Richard pick. I’ll go ahead and take a wait and see approach on this one because DT is a bigger need than saftey. Plus, chancey Garner-Johnson is still on the board. If he keeps falling we may need to make a play

Woah.  That is one of those stats that seems hard to believe. I guess total snaps is a more meaningful metric, but that is just an odd stat for a second round pick, especially if you play at UCF.
