South Lake Tahoe/Heavenly

Only saw some quick mentions in the ski thread.  We are going in early March.  Staying at the Marriott Grand Residences, chosen by my FIL who is the footing the bill for lodging.  Access to the gondola and being in the middle of town were most important to him.  We are still able to cancel if somebody has a great rec with the same qualifications.

All that to say, recs on best apres ski (drinks and food) and dinner spots?

That's pretty much all I'm looking for since we'll be skiing the rest of the time.

Thanks

I went to Squaw for Spring Break in '08. Only place I ate on the south side was Burger Lounge, and it was excellent.

If you find yourself in the vicinity of Truckee, and have a sweet tooth, the Treat Box Bakery on Donner Pass Rd. may have the best "donut" I've ever had, and I've had a lot of donuts. They are the things shaped like plump bars of soap on the left side of this picture underneath where it says "Apple pockets." Perfect balance of crunchy crust and cake interior.

Truckee is great, but on the opposite end of Lake Tahoe

That hotel is fine, centrally located close to the lifts and near the stateline  2 min walk to harrahs if you intend to gamble

naked fish already mentioned,

base camp pizza, right next to the gondola and your hotel, good pizza (i like the pearl harbour, hawaiian pizza with japs) outstanding taplist

lucky beaver on the other side of harrah's fantastic burger, a must try IMO

There is a bakery near naked fish that has great croissants, cant think of the name off hand

Heavenly is super convenient but Kirkwood is the best skiing in the area

Yep. The best thing I can say about Heavenly is that it's right in town.  Other than that ... pffffft. And yeah, Kirkwood is the shit. I just wish the Vail resorts hadn't bought out my two favorite resorts in Tahoe - Kirkwood and Northstar. Vail resorts are top notch, but unnecessarily ridiculously expensive, and those two resorts were already fantastic anyway.

Yep I've never traversed more in my life than at Heavenly .

OK, so it wasn't just me then. I've never been anywhere with more flat area than Heavenly. Not even close. That place can eabod.

Yep, won't ever go back.  Not need to go that far west for better skiing.

Just got back from our trip.  Overall it was great.  Scenery is stunning, the gondola access from the Marriott Grand Residences was as advertised, walking distance to casinos was cool (we only went once), had great snow, and lift lines were not too bad Saturday and basically non-existent Sunday and Monday.  I liked that it felt a bit more like a town than just a tourist ski village, if that makes any sense.

First night we went to Azul out of convenience.  Was described as California Fresh Mex, and I'd say that's pretty accurate.  Food was good, nothing great.  I had a jalapeno marg that had a nice spice kick, but seemed very weak in the tequila department.

Primo the second night.  We got there real early (5 PM) as that was the only time they could seat our party (6 and a baby).  We were the only people there so got great attention from the staff from the start, and it continued even when they started to fill up.  Starters were nothing special (spinach stuffed mushrooms, sauteed shrimp and calamari, wedge and caesar salads), but the pastas were fantastic.  We got rigatoni with vodka sauce (not nearly as creamy as traditional), bolognese that was on special, veal picatta, and chicken parm (my favorite of the bunch).  I will caveat that we were all starving after a full day on the slopes, so that always helps.

Naked Fish the 3rd night.  I thought the food was very good, but the setting was a little cramped for our party.  Service started off good, but then tailed off.  Still an enjoyable meal.

Last dinner was at Artemis Lakefront Cafe (Mediterranean).  Enjoyed all the food and a nice Greek white wine.  They advertise lake views, but you would really only have those if you sit outside which obviously was a bit on the chilly side.  Would recommend for a casual dinner if Med sounds good.

I thought the skiing was good.  Helped that the snow was pretty great.  The lifts/runs were pretty short.  Felt like you had to ride 2 lifts and then ski all the way down to have a decently long run.  Really enjoyed my time in the trees.

Any rec's for North Lake Tahoe area?  Going on a last minute trip after the fourth with another couple.  Staying in Incline Village.

The Hyatt Regency in Incline Village has a casino and sportsbook

Kings Beach is nearby and has a lot of water activities

Downtown Truckee is worth a visit

Dinner/drink cruise on Lake Tahoe

Thanks.  We're actually staying at the Hyatt.  Have golf planned down south at Edgewood and then probably at Schaffer's Mill, plus fly fishing on the Truckee River one day.  Drink cruise sounds like a good plan too.  Weather looks spectacular (sunny and high around 80 each day).

Yeah going off in the trees is no joke in those conditions. That dude probably suffocated.

btw - I know it was a few months ago but the "tree run" where that guy died is about as heavily trafficked a tree run can get. It's really narrow and sandwiched between two gigantic blue runs that probably get the most skiers on the whole mountain.

The conditions were just sooo bad that particular day.

Never go off in the trees alone.

He was actually skiing with his girlfriend. A friend of mine rode up a ski lift with his girlfriend. She was begging ski patrol to do another pass. They had already done one pass (maybe 2?) and couldn't find him. They were convinced he made it out and was waiting for her at the lodge or in their car.

She was convinced he was in there but they wouldn't listen to her.

We were in North Lake Tahoe last weekend for my son's lacrosse tournament and the weather was perfect.

Oh, if you ski or board, Squaw Valley has trails open until July 7.

I’m assuming I should grab whatever in the way of dispensary supplies in Reno rather than Incline Village?

I'm going at the end of July to South Tahoe and staying at Harrah's. The GF (sorry, no pics) has a comped trip through Caesers for it. Gonna do some hiking/kayaking. Any recs for other food and entertainment are appreciated.
Hiking, numerous great trails with varying degree of difficulty. Emerald bay is beautiful and youll be there in height of bear season

Boat charters, fishing parasailing, golfing and gambling.

Several good food recs in this thread, though ill add izabellas and for late night grub, lucky beaver next to harrahs outstanding burgers, wings and steaks. Base camp pizza in heavenly village right next to the lifts good pizza and taplist.

Hardrock is newer and nicer of all the casinos, but everytime i go it seems dead and i rarely win there, better sports book then harveys but they are light on the ponies.

Several breweries in and around south lake tahoe
There is a jerky ppace across the street from harrahs towards heavenly, great bourbon beef jerky

Harrahs is nice but dated, I love the beds and pillows enough i ordered several pillows for my house

Going to be there end of July and early August also.  Staying in a house with my entire mom's side of the family.  Biking around the lake is fun.  Emerald bay is awesome.  Rent a boat or go on a cruise.

Don't know about food.  We have such a large group, around 30, when we go we either cook or have it catered at the house.  We did have a lunch at The Bistro.  It was beautiful and nice.

Stayed on a house in NLT last summer. We rented a boat/driver and had an amazing day. They pick you up at Garwoods, where we had lunch and then hopped on a boat for the afternoon. Take your own beers, etc. etc.. No wine though. Water is so clear, and i think ~1700' deep.

Played blackjack at Crystal Bay casino. Think more Golden Nugget than Cosmo. Cant wait to go back.

We were there last December and had a great time. We ate at a lot of the places in Heavenly Village area but I think my favorites were the hole in the wall places we stopped at along the drive around the the Lake. Craft beer and great burgers everywhere.

FiftyFifty brewing in Truckee is pretty close. July isn’t the best weather for them but their Eclipse stout series is really great. They had quite a few on tap last time I went there.

And don’t do the Gondola to top of mountain.  Waste of time and money.  We had lunch up there last summer.  Food was expensive and terrible.

The thought of riding a gondola, and looking out at no snow makes my head hurt, and my heart ache.

The Emerald Bay hike is not bad at all and it is great down there.

This was probably the highlight of the trip. We hiked down and kayaked around the island and the bay. The short hike to Eagle Falls was nice as well. I unfortunately saw no bears.

I rode the mountain coaster and it was a blast. Kind of a short ride for $30, but how often do you get to do something like that? Agreed that the gondola was a little pricey, but the views were worth it, there were also a few paths/trails to hike once up there.

Thew views were still incredible, but I can see where it would be even better with snow.

The only other rec I could throw in for food that hasn't been mentioned is Rojo's tavern. I prefer hole in the wall pub type places, so this was more my speed.  We stayed for karaoke Saturday night, there were 4 bachelorette parties in attendance (phone was dead, and  didn't get pics), so we heard "Like a Prayer" at least 3 times, but after a couple of edibles, it was entertaining.

Casinos:

Harrah's and Harvey's are both dated, but not the worst I've seen.  I mainly play craps, so can't speak much for the other table games. They had $10 tables in the morning, and were bumped up to at least $15 in the evening. Hardrock was definitely newer and nicer.  I saw a $5 table there once, but it was minly $10-$15. The Montblue seemed nice and spacious as well.

Were you there for this?  The cops shut down the park and were chasing some dude around in the woods.

Driving from Carmel to South Lake Tahoe today to meet my family.  31 people in a house should be interesting.

We are doing dinner on a boat one night.  I’m renting a tritoon one day and taking a bunch of the kids tubing.  We will ride bikes and hike a bunch.  Skipping the Gondola.
