She come up to me and she said
"You know anything good on that guitar?"
I didn't say nothing, I just kept on playing
She said, "Have you ever heard this song
Called Polk Salad Annie?" I just kept playing

She said, "Every time I hear that song
My insides feel like warm butter
And I just wanna take off my clothes
And dance around in my underwear"

I said, "Down in Louisiana
Where the alligator grow so mean"

Every time I hear this song I can't help but chuckle at this point.  It's got to be one of the most brilliant little chunks of story telling I've heard.

Yeah, that's Peak Ray Wylie Hubbard.  He's pretty close to the top of my "damn why didn't I think of that?" list.

I saw Ray on Saturday night in Helotes at the John T. Floore Country Store. What a glorious night. He's 72 years old and still rockin'. He and his son and a guitarist named Jonathan Taylor tore it up onstage.

In his book "A life ... well, lived" he tells a great story about his appearance on Letterman when he did the  Mother Blues/Polk Salad Annie song.

As much as I love RWH and I do love his music, her classic drunken, lagging behind vocals as backup to his really makes the song. Hardly in a hurry and yet the lyrics say they are getting there as fast as they can. Artistic brilliance imo.
