Aug 5 has been my happy day for the last 12 years.   Its the day I adopted my first best friend 2YO Sadie from Heart of Texas Lab Rescue and she been the greatest dog ever.  I've celebrated Aug 5 with her and eventually her new puppy sister 5 years ago (Chloe was born the first week of Aug, so lets make it Aug 5).

I made plans on Wed, went and got some raw stew meat that was on sale at HEB, some extra hamburger. and all ready for today.

on Thurs morn, we woke up and she was drooling,  totally unable to move or stand.  Clearly an emergency.  I rushed to get sister Chloe in her crate with some food, and then picked Sadie up and got her 65 pounds into my front seat, and hauled ass to the emergency vet.

3 hours later I am told shes most likely has a brain tumor that the swelling finally impacted her abilities.  Vet says lots of steroids will help get the swelling down. but obvious long term prognosis isnt good.

Shes partially recovered. can now walk awkwardly  (cant walk straight and her balance is off). But she can eat and drink and is more mobile than thurs.

So I wasnt going to let the Sadie-versary pass without celebrating. Both girls got chunks of beef.  Sadie's fighting the good fight, and if we dont have much better improvement in the next few days I will do the right thing by her.  But thats gonna fucking hurt bad.

Sadie Thurs afternoon with her shaved leg:

Took me a moment or two to figure out exactly what the hell is going on in this picture. 😊

Call A&M. When Blue was diagnosed with her liver shunt, vet charged almost $3k for a CT scan. aggy was about $600 for the one before they performed surgery.

yeah her back legs were sticking straight out due to neurological damage.

I hope Sadie can get it turned around.  But it sounds like you are a wonderful friend to her no matter what.  Good girl, Sadie.

Thanks for the thoughts everyone.

what I didnt say was that she has already had a growth on her face that tested initially negative for cancer, but its gotten bigger over the last 2 months and bleeding occasionally leaving blood on her blanket and bed. .  we were at the vet on Monday the 31st to confirm it needed to be remove and had scheduled to remove that today.  but with thurs's events thats on hold now, and I dont think an MRI will help solve anything.   I have to talk with the vet about her real quality of life before doing anything else.

I can say she has improved a bit (but cant walk straight), still has a ferocious appetite, and despite her issues, continues to follow me to every room I go to even when I ask her to stay.   Shes always had to be right next to me, and this isnt stopping her.

We lost our 13 year-old Boxer last year. Then we lost my dad on New Years Eve, which suddenly which made it seem not so big a deal. Not surprisingly, we have been in a funk all year. We just got a new puppy this week. She’s a good doggo. Things are looking up.

We’re going to have to part ways with my buddy.

I mentioned before that he had bitten my MIL. Over the weekend we had a family gathering and he bit my dad’s hand when he stuck it in his crate, and later bit my big dumb cousin in the face when he grabbed Samson by the face and got right in it. We had a talk as a family and decided we would keep him away from others forever, and then Monday evening when my 14 year old son was trying to calm him on the couch during some big storms he bit him in the face and neck and bloodied him pretty good. No permanent damage thank God.

We can’t have a dog we can’t trust, and talking to our trainer she says the best thing is to see if the rescue can re-home him. They said they will help.

We are all devastated of course. My daughter can’t stop crying and my wife is 50/50 sad and furious. I’ve been keeping him pretty isolated which I know he doesn’t like.

I’m really praying the rescue org can find him a place with some other dogs and no kids, because I really don’t want to think about the alternative.

Not his fault with someone putting a hand in his crate and grabbing his face. Big fucking no-no's.

The kid, on the other hand.

Probably didn't help that he'd been harassed a few days earlier.

Have you taken him to the vet? He may have something physically going on that is hurting him. Had a dog once that got snappy. Turned out he had a back issue and it really hurt him if it got touched the wrong way. Long shot, but maybe get him a physical.

He’s been to the vet recently but these are the most recent of about six or seven incidents over the three years we’ve had him. He’s been in training but some traits are almost impossible to train away. He will be four years old in a couple of weeks and is just growing into his personality, I think.

And yeah, the previous bites were preventable with some common sense, but we just can’t risk him hurting someone badly. Especially a small child, and we have those over pretty frequently (and some of them are shitheads and don’t know how to act around dogs).

Horns crossed that the rescue comes through.

Our pug rescue had one sweet thing that was as anti-social as any I've seen. These folks took her in and she is quite happy just running with other dogs.

Man, that place looks great! Donated a bit to them in the honor of Inka.

If they die, they die.

the problem is those fucking Karen's and Ken's that do that and are the actual instigators are the ones who will scream the most to the city government that the dog is dangerous and needs to be put down.

which is why I would plan on planting a throw away on them and just shooting the fuckers claiming the dog was protecting me. and fuck them.

We’re worried about one of my 14 yo labs. Here in the last few hours she’s developed extreme balance issues and cant stand without falling down. She’s got this permanent head tilt as well, google suggests best case it’s  a vestibular (balance system) issue. She seems in good spirits, calling our vet first thing isn’t the morning. Wife’s not handling it well

F87C54AC-E8A7-4810-85FA-0AB8F370ACB3.jpeg

unfortunately, those are the exact symptoms that my 14yo Sadie manifested 10 days ago.

head tilt, completely unable to stand up, and shaking.

Not sure if you are in Austin, but if you are, I recommend not waiting and get to pet specialists of Austin.   They had a neuro vet on duty, who diagnosed her.

We got on steroids right away, and while Sadie is NOT 100% her old self, so far, shes recovered enough to be independently mobile and still have a healthy appetite.

Got her in first thing this morning,  vet suspects what they call old dog vestibular issues. Got her some steroids, so we’ll see if it helps. She slightly more mobile than she was yesterday, so we’ll see. Vet says give it a week and depending on how things go we’ll have the hard conversation.

on a side note, my other 14 yo lab had some sort of tumor in her brain a year or so ago that had her pretty much completely immobilized. Crash steroid diet worked wonders and she hasn’t had an issue since so I have high hopes

my 8 year old 75 lb lab/shepherd mix tore her ccl on sunday night. y'all had any success with a large dog healing from this without surgery? vet says to wait 3-4 weeks and see what happens...

The Goldendoodle above has/had a torn ACL. We just watch his running and really aggressive play. He has seemed to mostly recover. Swimming has been great. We walk him daily 30-45 minutes

Every 3-4 months after strenuous exercise he will hold his leg up and wimper a little bit overall his mobility and happiness are through the roof.

This is Sebastian playing with his new friend Jack at the dog park.  Jack is a German Shepherd and Great Pyrenees mix and is a huge dog.  Sebastian weighs 73 and Jack makes him look small.  Jack’s mom said she hopes I keep bringing Sebastian because Jack hasn’t played with any other dog there.  Jack’s mom is a cute elementary school teacher.
