We are saying goodbye to Jack after 12 years of love, loyalty, occasional fits of rage for chewing shoelaces, and many, many, fond memories.

Liver and kidney failure. We’ve been trying to keep him happy and comfortable but he has stopped eating and is just shutting down.

This goober is in a cone for two weeks because he chewed on a spot on his tail so much it got infected. He's never been in a cone and I gotta tell you, it was one of the most pathetic things I've ever seen. He stayed like this for a long time, just staring at that toy, since he couldn't figure out at first how to get it with the cone on.

Our 8 year old golden retriever, Colt, woke up Sat morning completely fine, and by late afternoon was completely blind.  So far we have been to our normal vet, and an eye specialist, and back to the eye specialist tomorrow and MRI next week.  I'm not sure what best case scenario is for all of this, but it obviously sucks.

She running on a golf course there?

Nah, it's a fenced in sport turf on East River park.  We normally go to the dog park and let her run it out, but some Joey Baggadonuts was there with his dogs and he's super aggressive with them and uncomfortable to be around.

Just took him in for MRI yesterday.  They found a mass in his sinus cavity that is most likely cancer.  Could also be a fungal something but unlikely.  Waiting for our vet to call for next steps but the MRI place said it would probably be a biopsy.

Will he be able to see again?

Sorry to bring sadness to a great thread.

We lost Lola in August. Ruffas got a cancerous infection in his paw about the same time.  It’s now ravaged his lower leg and tomorrow’s going to be his last day. He’s 11 1/2 so treatment or amputation would be prolonging his life for our selfishness.  He’s been a great boy and I’m going to miss him terribly.  Love your dogs.  Hug them and indulge them.  The end comes up way too fast.

Love you Ru.

Just got off the phone with our vet.  He said from the MRI there is a mass in his right nasal cavity that has spread to some other part of his sinus.  He said the next step is to decide if we want to go through with treatment, or make him comfortable the rest of his life.  If we go through with treatment, they he will need a surgery for a biopsy to identify the type of cancer, then they will formulate a plan of chemo/radiation etc.  Since our vet isn't an oncologist, he couldn't give us a recommendation on which path to choose and instead referred us to a vet oncologist who will be better equipped to make a recommendation.  I will call this afternoon after they get his records from our vet to schedule a consultation.  Our vet said there is no cure to eliminate the cancer, and his vision would most likely not come back.

I'm not sure which choice I would prefer.  It will be 2 years tomorrow since we had to put down our last dog who had degenerative something or other where her spinal cord started deteriorating.  According to the vet, she was completely pain free but her back legs were 100% paralyzed.  The vet left it up to us to determine her quality of life and we kept her around for 6 months.  She had good days and bad, but in hindsight I feel we kept her around a little too long selfishly.  This time I am hoping (selfishly) that the vet doesn't leave us with such an open ended decision about his life and tells us what we should do.

He is adjusting amazingly to being blind, so much so that I am constantly checking to see if his eyesight has come back (it hasn't).  He can navigate our entire first floor and enter and leave rooms on his own, find his water bowls, and goes straight to the back door and barks when he wants out.  We never let him out alone, but he can walk across our back deck to one of the only 2 spots of grass we have to pee, then he walks around the pool to the other spot to take a shit.  I took him on a walk the last 2 mornings, and he walks confidently down the street.  He can even remember where a curb is (5 houses down) that he has to step over and starts high stepping as he gets closer.  He will even go sit at our front window where he used to always sit and wait for another neighborhood dog to walk by and bark at them.  He can't see them now obviously, but our other dog (who never used to bark at the other dogs walking by) will sit next to him and bark once to let him know a dog in his his yard and let him go crazy barking.

Today I went to a buddy’s house to smoke food and drink my ass off. I get there and I notice he keeps his dog GIdget crated non stop. I call him out on it and he claims he doesn’t have time. I say you have time now as we aren’t doing shit and he just kind of laughs. I tell him to un crate the dog so he does for about 2 hours and the dog is well behaved. It is just hanging out around the smoker like we are not bothering shit.

My wife shows up with our 2 miniature dachshunds that are a little over a year old and she hears the whining from the garage for 2 hours. She drives me home because I am plastered. As soon as I get in the car I go off about this poor dog and how fucking mad I am. My voice even cracks because she is such a good dog. The wife asks if we can adopt her. Tomorrow at 8 am I am going to get Gidget and bringing her to her good home. I don’t want her but goddamnit I can’t sleep another night seeing this dog neglected. My “ friend” is thrilled I am getting his dog.

I am really having a hard time remembering he is a friend. Gidget photos will be uploaded in about 10 hours. It will be a shit show around here and I hope my two other pups adapt and understand. Gidget is a year old.

My wife always adopts dogs that need a home. She believes we should rescue  rather than buy pure beds. However , we were given an Australian Shepard several years ago by a friend who moved out of the country.

Katie got along well with our other pets and was the smartest dog we have ever had. She died unexpectedly a year ago and my wife was distraught. She said she didn't want to replace her and I let it go.

Last night I was at Petsmart and this couple had an Aussie pup. She told me they were selling it to someone they were meeting there. I asked if they had anymore pups and she said yes.

I told her my story and she said if I would drive out ro her place and see if I liked her other pup, she would sell it to me for $200.

I went and checked out the pup and she was great. I bought her and gave it to my wife earlier today.

She loves this puppy and cried and I gave her a great anniversary.

Took away the pain of the game today (somewhat).

This is a good page.

I didn’t want another dog but damn she is great. She walks great on a leash and is happy to be loved. I told my buddy I got her from that if he ever got another animal I would call the humane society. It’s weird, he isn’t a bad guy but just lazy.

Aussies are awesome. I have an Aussie/ Border Collie mix myself and know a couple of friends with Aussies as well. All great doggos. Congratulations, you guys are going to be very happy I'm sure.

This is Charlie, ~8.5 year old Aussie/ Border Collie mix. Got him at the Austin Animal Center at about four years old and hasn't slowed down at all. Definitely has that herding breed anxiety/neediness if left alone or idle for too long, but incredibly loyal and friendly, and is just about the best partner for outdoor exploration you could ever imagine. Not a huge fan of the water though, we've been working on that. Love this dude.
