E.J. Holland: What is UT's pitch to elite WR Garrett Wilson as decision nears?

There hasn’t been much of a change with Garrett Wilson. The four-star wide receiver out of Austin Lake Travis is torn between Ohio State and Texas and isn’t giving one school over the edge at this time. Wilson did, however, admit that his official visit to Texas last weekend gave him a lot to think about. “It went really well,” Wilson said. “I spent a lot of time with the players and coaches and connected with them. I got to hang out with Brennan Eagles, Cade Brewer and Sam (Ehlinger). They kind of joint hosted me. They told me to stay home and bring Texas back to what it used to be.”

The message from the Texas staff was similar — stay in Austin and help the Longhorns once again become a national powerhouse. “Coach (Drew) Mehringer and Coach (Tim) Beck told me the same thing,” Wilson said. “I’m already in Austin. They think why not stay here and build my legacy and build my brand.”

One of the biggest questions heading into the visit for Wilson was how well Texas would pass the ball. The Longhorns shuffled quarterbacks last season and didn’t exactly light it up through the air. But the spring game certainly helped UT’s cause. “If they pass like they did in the spring game, I feel like I could catch a lot of balls,” he said. “There is a lot of upside there for me.” Wilson said he could make a decision at some point this weekend or any time shortly after that. At 6-foot, 185 pounds, Wilson is ranked as the No. 5 wide receiver and No. 29 overall prospect in the nation, per 247Sports Composite.

So about that LSU - NFL sales pitch...

I'm thinking NFL teams received Guice and Chark's drug test results. Over/under 8 positive tests for weed?

With the way the bottom has fallen out over the past two drafts for LSU because of off the field issues should negate anything any position LSU takes with regards to pretty much anything.

Their drug policy is probably the worst in D1. I think the Honey Badger posted 8+ positive drug tests. Miles famously asked the team to vote to keep him on the team.

Plenty of stories of Baton Rouge PD looking the over way on off the field incidents.

Perrilloux and the casino chip BS.

They're filthy AF. If you're a U Lab, Southern Lab, or Catholic High parent get your kid the f*** out of Baton Rouge. You won't regret it.

E.J. Holland: Four-star DB Jalen Catalon goes in-depth on Texas, recruiting

Four-star Mansfield Legacy defensive back Jalen Catalon sat down with Horns247's EJ Holland to talk about Texas, his trip to Austin, the recruiting process and more. Here is the full Q&A.

EJ: How is the offseason going for you? I know it must be a little difficult balancing baseball and spring football.

JC: It’s definitely tough. You have to make sure you are in shape for both. It’s your responsibility to make sure you grind for both and are prepared for both situations. Baseball is looking good right now, but I’m also staying in shape for football because we’re looking to go all the way this year. The team is looking good, so I’m really excited for my senior year.

EJ: Can you share a little more on yourself as a baseball player?

JC: I play centerfield. I think I’m pretty good at it. My sophomore year, I had to play behind my brother and play my role. But this year, I’m playing centerfield really well, and I’m hitting .400. I think a lot of colleges are seeing that and are allowing me to play both, especially Texas. I think I’m doing really well, and our team is doing really well. I’m batting consistently, so hopefully, I can keep that going heading into playoffs.

EJ: You made a surprise visit to Texas last weekend for the spring game. How did your trip to Austin go?

JC: It was a last day decision. It was actually a situation where I found a ride out there, so I decided to go. When you go to Texas, they always treat you like family. I got to talk to Coach (Craig) Naivar, and he showed me why Texas is the best place to be. There is family down there, and the city speaks for itself. The game was really good. I saw some good talent out there. I also saw some good 2019 and 2020 recruits. It was definitely nice to go down there and see that action.

EJ: What were some of your takeaways from the spring game?

JC: There is definitely some speed down there. I think the package they have with a lot of defensive backs on the field really helps because they have so much speed on the field, and they can tackle. If you run on them, they can tackle. If you throw on them, they can cover. It works out really well. Their offense looked really good. They can’t go wrong with either quarterback. They were throwing the ball around. I can see that (Tom) Herman made some good changes. I feel like it’s nothing but up from here. I think they are going to have a good year.

EJ: I know you have a really good relationship with Texas safeties coach Craig Naivar. Can you expand on your bond with him?

JC: We have a great relationship. He obviously talks about how I can fit in, but he also talks to me about life. He asks how baseball is going and keeps it real with me. I just love that. Of course, I know he has knowledge of the game. I love that. The defensive backs that are there speak highly of him. They said he treats them like family and coaches them really well. He’s going to care for you on and off the field. He keeps in touch with me quite a bit. He’s one of the coaches I would love to play for.

EJ: Did you get a chance to talk to Tom Herman while you were on campus?

JC: I got to say what’s up to him. I always communicate with him. He’s such a real guy. He’s always straight up. He’s a down to earth person. He’ll care for you just like Coach Naivar does. As young as he is, I really like his story. He started from the bottom there, and now, he has Texas on the rise. I definitely think he has some great things happening down there.

EJ: You mentioned that Texas has been selling the opportunity to play baseball at the next level. Have you talked to the baseball staff?

JC: I did get to talk to the baseball staff. They love me. They want me to play both because they think I can be a good addition for them. I love the baseball program. I love the atmosphere there. It was great to see everyone bond with each other when I was down there. I could definitely see myself playing baseball there, too.

EJ: Texas is obviously making a big impact on your recruitment. But what does your overall recruiting picture look like?

JC: If I had to say my top schools right now, they would be Clemson, TCU, Arkansas, Texas and Ohio State. I have no order. I wouldn’t say I have a favorite right now. Those are the top schools. Texas is definitely a good school, and they keep it real with me. Every time I go there, I love my visit. But I’m going to look at all the schools and see which one offers me the best opportunity. I’m going to talk with my family and keep it low key. I’m going to trust the process and take it slow.

EJ: Clemson was considered a favorite for a long time. Arkansas and Ohio State are obviously in there. Is going out-of-state a factor for you?

JC: Not much at all. The best university isn’t always in-state. You have to do what’s best for you. I don’t mind going out-of-state at all. If the best opportunity for me is to go out-of-state and play, that’s what I’ll do. I think it’s a blessing to go out-of-state because it gives me an opportunity to go out and play for a different university and breathe in a new atmosphere. But TCU and Texas are some great universities as well. Anything can go when it comes to those schools.

EJ: What’s next in your recruiting process? Do you have any official visits scheduled or a decision timeline?

JC: Those five schools will probably be my official visits. I’m going to set one to Arkansas. I’ve also talked to Texas recently about setting one up. I’m not sure on the dates, but I’m about to set those two for sure. I might see Texas in the summer or during the season. We'll see what's best. My commitment date right now is January 31. It could change to signing day or a little earlier. I don’t want it to be any earlier than January 1. January 31 is the week before signing day, and that’s the time limit I want to set for myself.

Eh, better than him going to aggy or Okie Lite. I'm fine with it.

Perhaps, but Gunnell has a strong rapport with Wilson and Higgins.  All three are on the same 7-on-7 team

e: Machinator best me to it
