This guy's from Tennessee, right? Probably tough to pull off but I like the chances against those names. Interesting choice of schools going through each P5 conference

Yeah. They'd be the hometown choice. Family does care about academics, though.

Was thinking about using these phrases in my Cine write up.

I’ll give you bout tree fiddy if you use these in a write up this week:

Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

You look so good in love.

Take on me. Take me on. I’ll be gone in a day or two.

What’s new pussycat?

Here's a clip of him at a camp. He's got a crazy physique but no clue how to play. His feet look a little plodding, but I think that may just be due to him having no clue what to do in a pass drop.  Would be nice to see him do some agility workouts to measure foot speed and mobility.

Edit: Here's the link to his hudl: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/7556060/599901d2b534c122dc729380

He shows some pretty quick feet on plays in there. I'm thinking the slowness in the camp video is more due to not knowing technique. Seems like a no brainer take if we can get him.  Will be really interesting to see how much his technique improves after a whole year of training at IMG.

Damn he's pretty lean

The Stampede: Recruiting scoop from Texas Heat Wave

— Let’s start off with the biggest storyline heading into the weekend — elite offensive lineman Javonne Shepherd. Not only did he show up, the four-star prospect out of Houston North Forest once again named Texas his leader. Despite a week of controversy, Shepherd always intended on coming to the event and made sure transportation was available. He did enjoy his visit to Texas A&M, but the Longhorns absolutely knocked it out of the park this weekend. Shepherd showed more personality than ever before and just looked like he was at home on the Forty Acres. He really bonded with the players and the coaching staff. While Shepherd wants to make a decision after he makes his officials, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him shut things down on his birthday this month — that was his initial date. Overall, we feel extremely confident in out Texas Crystal Ball picks.

— Rischad Whitfield aka Footwork King came through in the clutch as he provided transportation for Shepherd. Texas has done a tremendous job of winning over Footwork King and building a personal relationship with him. Footwork King has maintained that he loves what Tom Herman is doing at Texas and is very open to having his kids attend UT — Texas running back Toneil Carter worked with him. Footwork King has trained Shepherd since before he was a name on the recruiting trail and is an important piece to the puzzle. The staff deserves plenty of kudos for courting him and getting him on campus twice over the last month.

— Another recruit tied to Footwork King is four-star 2020 wide receiver Demond Demas. While he said Alabama was his leader after the event, Texas moved past Texas A&M to take the in-state edge. If Texas can win some games this year and land Shepherd, it should be in a prime position to leapfrog Alabama and snag Demas, who is one of the best pass catchers in the country regardless of class. Demas and Shepherd are lifelong friends and have talked about playing together at the next level and with Footwork King appearing to be in UT’s corner, this one seems like a slam-dunk for the Longhorns.

— Sticking with 2020 recruits, Texas made a huge impression on four-star Saint Louis Trinity Catholic (MO) running back Mookie Cooper. The fact that he came to Austin for an early unofficial visit speaks volumes of his interest. The entire staff has done a wonderful job with this one, but Texas Recruiting Director Bryan Carrington deserves a ton of praise. He has built a strong personal relationship with Cooper and his family and really wowed them on campus this weekend. Texas sold Cooper in the same way it did Jake Smith from a scheme standpoint and from talking to Cooper, it seems like he loves the idea of playing both in the slot and in the backfield. I actually feel really good about my Crystal Ball.

— We’ll get back to 2020 recruits in a little bit. One of the most intriguing prospects on campus this weekend was Punahou (HI) inside linebacker Maninoa Tufono. He and has family spent a lot of time with Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando and seemed to really mesh with him. But the X-factor in this one is recruiting staffer Jake Langi, who has strong Polynesian ties. Langi also spent extended time with the family and personally escorted them out of the facility after the event. I briefly caught up with Tufono’s father, who complemented Langi and the staff and raved about their time on campus. From talking to sources, we feel like Texas is in a very good spot to get Tufono back for an OV.

— Texas hosted another key target in four-star inside linebacker David Gbenda. However, his visit was a little different. Gbenda came in early with his father and met with the staff for a couple of hours before heading home. It seemed like Texas A&M had built some momentum with Gbenda, but it feels like the tide is turning in this recruitment. Texas needs linebackers, and Gbenda remains a wanted man. I am very close to putting my Crystal Ball pick back in for Texas.

— One of the biggest targets that we didn’t talk much about this weekend was four-star junior college defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who commanded extra attention from the coaches and support staff. Johnson didn’t talk to the media after the event, but we did talk to a source close to his recruitment. He said the UT staff did an excellent job of selling him on scheme fit and development. The source added that Texas has a strong chance of getting Johnson back for an OV this fall.

— Speaking of official visitors, Texas hosted two key targets in Florida outside linebacker Rian Davis and four-star safety Lewis Cine. The Longhorns made up a ton of ground with Davis this weekend and are now tied for the lead with Georgia. He had a great time on campus and is familiar with the program — he played his junior season in the Houston-area. Davis is contemplating making a summer decision, and Texas is gaining steam. While Penn State was his leader for a long time, there is plenty of reason for optimism with Cine. UT safeties coach Craig Naivar has done an excellent job of recruiting Cine and forming a relationship with his mentor Deion Sanders. The visit was huge for Cine, and Texas is certainly gaining momentum ahead of his August decision.

— Texas added an important commitment this weekend from rising George Ranch defensive lineman Peter Mpagi. This one was an easy win for the Longhorns. Mpagi dreamed of receiving an offer from the Longhorns and as soon as he received it, he was ready to pull the trigger. Mpagi entered the weekend with full intentions of committing to UT and was recruiting others during the event. He officially gave his verbal pledge during a meeting with the staff right after the pool party. Mpagi will stick with Texas throughout the process and help recruit.

— Could Texas be close to landing another defensive lineman? Mansfield Legacy’s Taurean Carter was open about TCU and Texas leading the way in his recruitment. However, Texas appears to have the advantage here. He and teammate Jalen Catalon want to play together at the next level, and we still have reason to believe the Longhorns have the edge in that recruitment. Landing Carter, who actually doesn’t want to make a decision until October, and Catalon would also help with four-star cornerback Jeffery Carter if the Longhorns decide to push. Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles met with Carter after the pool party and escorted him out of the building after about an hour.

— Texas also needs some help along the offensive line and brought in IMG Academy (Fla.) product Chris Akporoghene. We are told that the visit went extremely well here and that the Longhorns are now major players in his recruitment. Akporoghene actually plans to release his top schools today, and we fully expect Texas to survive the cut. Akporoghene is expected to make a return trip to Austin for an official visit. With Branson Bragg off the board, Akporoghene, who will likely slide inside at the next level, is a key target moving forward.

— Texas cornerback commit Kenyatta Watson II arrived early in Austin this weekend and actually stayed with freshman cornerback Jalen Green. The two really hit it off and are forming a strong relationship. Watson remains fully solid to the Longhorns and is continuing to work hard on the recruiting trail. Watson and 2020 quarterback commit Hudson Card both spent a lot of time with the aforementioned Cooper and made him a top target throughout the weekend. By the way, we are told that Watson’s mother has been helping Texas recruit by reaching out to other mothers in the class.

— Speaking of mothers, Texas has obviously been making them an important part of the recruiting process. The mothers of freshmen Byron Hobbsand D’shawn Jamison were both on campus this weekend and spent time with the mothers of recruits at the pool party as they helped sell UT. I spoke to various mothers this weekend and all had great things to say about the coaching staff and the event. A constant in my conversations was ‘family feel.’ By the way, Hobbs’ mother has been in frequent contact with the mother of Texas A&M defensive line commit DeMarvin Leal. You can bet Texas is going to continue to do everything it can to flip Leal over the course of the recruiting process.

— All right, back to the 2020 class. Texas has done a tremendous job of getting a jump-start on next cycle. This event was definitely geared more towards underclassmen when compared to last year’s. One of the biggest 2020 targets on campus was Chad Lindberg, who might be the offensive linemen in the state for next cycle. Lindberg really connected with Herb Hand and some of the offensive linemen on the team and made it clear that he had a blast on campus. From talking to him and his mother, it seems like they really feel at home at Texas. It’s also worth mentioning that Lindberg’s brother is a freshman at Texas. I think UT has the edge early on.

— Another 2020 offensive line recruit that Texas appears to have the inside track for is Port Neches-Groves product Jaylen Garth. He is a teammate of Texas quarterback Roschon Johnson, who spent the entire weekend recruiting Garth and showing him around campus and Austin. I’m told that Garth looks up to Johnson like an older brother and really wants to play with him at the next level. It’s early, but we really like where Texas stands in this recruitment.

— Texas has made Chris Thompson, the nation’s top 2020 safety, a big priority for next cycle. Thompson spent the weekend with Naivar and recruiting staffer Ra’Shaad Samples. As we’ve mentioned in the past, Thompson has a strong relationship with Samples, whose father is Duncanville head coach Reginald Samples. That should go a long way in this recruitment. I caught up with the father of Thompson, who told me he really likes Naivar and loved their time at Texas. Thompson wants to take the process slow, but we feel like Texas is definitely an early frontrunner.

If we're going to torture metaphors, could we have some nice photography-related ones?  Like "Recruit X said his visit to UT was an Ansel Adamesque experience of complete tonal gradation,"  "perfect exposure,"  "developing nicely,"  "put this recruitment  in the stop bath and dip it in the fixer because this one is over"  etc....

Was hoping someone would call me out on describing a shot as simultaneously 'crosscourt' and 'down-the-line'.

I had no idea what you were talking about. I only really like football- don't follow soccer.

It can be a bit hard to tell how good an offensive lineman is in a camp setting without pads. That being said, this young man appears to suck ass at football, which might be an impediment going forward as a football player.

Bama' just took a 5th DL commit, maybe opens the door for Tuitele a little more?

4th, actually

I think Fat Tuti and Sopsher have spots reserved, and they have several more they're looking at and are in a good spot for They might trapdoor one of the current commits.

I think Carter's film is pretty good.  Want to see how Sweat plays this year.  Several reports have said he's up to 6'4 260 lb. range.  He was one of the earliest DL offers for this class so the staff obviously liked what they saw a while back

I would love to see Sweat show up here under 270 next year. Let Yancy add the weight.

I really like the ceiling on all 3 of those guys, lets see them play as RS Juniors. I am looking forward to those days.
