Texas recruiting notes 2019

The program is pretty light-lipped about how they view the transfer market, but it seems pretty obvious that they're going to be all over finding a GT at tailback, even if they land Cain. Watson has acquitted himself well, as an example for them to point to, and Texas has as good a story to sell as anyone else in terms of playing time mixed with playoff potential for 2019.

I could see Meekins getting a promotion. Is the consensus that he could be an effective OC? I just can't see anyone hiring Meh away for any kind of "promotion" because it is known that he sucks. If we bring on Beaty we better be losing two offensive coaches to make room for another coach/recruiter on Defense because those motherfuckers need some serious help.

Well, it would be perceived because he'd get a co-oc title somewhere smaller, or even playcalling duties. If someone think he's an ace recruiter, then it might be worth it for a smaller school to bring him on to help land better recruits.

I don't see how we don't bring on another defensive coach, but we'll find out soon enough.

  • Texas State hires Kendal Briles as HFC
  • Houston promotes Randy Clement to OC from Run Game Coordinator / OLINE
  • This opens up OLINE job at UH which Warehime takes at the request of Herman
  • This opens up TE job at Texas for Beaty with a Assoc Head Coach / Recruiting Title (for more pay)
  • Casey Horney gets a position coaching position on Briles staff at Texas State.

That’s good to hear, we would’ve been in a world of hurt without Watson.

I feel like Herman is looking for somebody to call the plays from the press box.  He gave Beck a full year to prove himself last year and took over play calling duties himself after the Maryland game.  Was Beaty calling the plays at Kansas??

(Beaty is already listed as a consultant at Texas on his Wiki page).

I see ou sucks selling DL recruits just like aggy is selling DB recruits.  The highly ranked recruits are being pitched immediate playing time and that they are the missing pieces to the future of the program.

I really like Texas’s position going forward, if we can get some assistance with an additional ace recruiter on staff.  Is Beatty the guy?  He might be what the doctor ordered, and Warehime should be the likely coach to be replaced.

Beatty will not be the guy, but Beaty might be.

This has been the strangest cycle.

How will this affect his eligibility after he transfers to Texas?

Michigan will have a bowl game to play before their season is officially done, but Gary did not say whether he’ll be playing in that game before heading to the professional ranks.

Let me help you out with that, Josh Alper.

So where are we at for the rest of this class?

Cain or DJ Williams or the JUCO guy at TB? Let's assume they land one of these guys. 1

Caleb Johnson or bust at LB? Let's say 0.

Catalon or another guy they might be targeting that isn't on the radar yet. Let's say 1.

Higgins if he doesn't get into Stanford? Bru McCoy? Let's say 1.

2 OLs.

They're taking 27 unless they get the right guy and then they take 28.

They're still evaluating new guys and putting in work. They look like they have their shit together on player evaluations. The iffiest guy in this class is Shepherd. Everyone else appears to be headcase free. There's a lot of raw talent to work with even when the ranking for a guy is weak. Everybody always thinks their guys are underrated, yada yada, but I wasn't guilty of that during the Brown era. I like where this is heading. I wish we were in a gamebreaking TB and dudes on the DL, but 2020 might be huge on both of those fronts for Texas. DJ Williams would solve for part of that in this cycle, so maybe we should cheer for Cain to go to UGA or something.

Do you know how Williams feels about Auburn or Miami? Or how, er, straightforward his recruitment would be?

WR could be 0, if we miss on Bru/Higgins. 2020 is loaded, so it might make more sense to kick the can down the road

I'd imagine that they'd look for more JUCO LBs if they missed on Caleb. But that could be a spot for a grad transfer.

DJ Williams is a better prospect than Cain, but Cain helps more next year due to enrolling early and being more polished playing at IMG when it's Ingram, Young, and not much else. That could be solved though via grad transfer.

Everyone looks good to me outside of Shepherd. Some, or even a lot, don't like taking Houston, but I'm fine with his fit.

EJ Confidence Board:

Spoiler

With recruiting in full swing, it's time to take an overall look at the state of recruiting for Texas in the 2019 class.

Here is the second edition of the confidence board.

SOLID COMMITS

QB Roschon Johnson, Port Neches-Groves — Johnson is completely solid to Texas and will enroll early. Nothing to see here.

RB Derrian Brown, Buford (GA) — Brown committed to Texas last month and is completely locked in with the Longhorns.

WR Jake Smith, Notre Dame Prep (AZ) — While schools like Texas A&M and USC have been pushing, Smith is solid thanks to UT’s on field performances.

WR Demariyon Houston, Millwood (Okla.) — Houston hasn’t made any visits and has been solid since committing back in the summer.

WR Marcus Washington, St. Louis Trinity Catholic (MO) — Washington recently committed to Texas and has shut down his recruitment.

TE Brayden Liebrock, Chandler (AZ) — Liebrock jumped onboard this offseason over several major offers and is firm.

TE Jared Wiley, Temple — Wiley picked Texas in May and has never wavered. He is set to enroll early.

OL Tyler Johnson, Conroe Oak Ridge — Johnson is one of the most important commits in the class, and the Longhorns have no reason to worry.

DL Jacoby Jones, Butler C.C. — The newest member of the class, Jones will graduate in December and enroll early.

DL Myron Warren, Many (La.) — Warren committed to Texas last week and will make his OV next month. Expect him to sign early.

DL Peter Mpagi, George Ranch — Mpagi committed to his dream school and will sign early. He is also slated to enroll early.

DL T'Vondre Sweat, Huntsville — Sweat was one of UT’s first commits this cycle and will sign early.

LB De'Gabriel Floyd, Westlake (Calif.) — Floyd has been the Longhorns’ vocal leader this cycle and will enroll early.

LB David Gbenda, Cinco Ranch — Gbenda recently committed to Texas and is happy with his decision.

LB Marcus Tillman Jr., Orlando Jones (Fla.) — Tillman basically committed to Texas on the spot this summer and is solid. He will enroll early.

CB Marques Caldwell, Alvin — The former Oregon commit always dreamed of playing for Texas and will sign early.

S Tyler Owens, Plano East — Owens committed to Texas last month and has shut down his recruitment.

ATH Jordan Whittington, Cuero — While he did make a visit to Arizona, Whittington is no longer making trips. He will enroll early.

ATH Peyton Powell, Odessa Permian — There were a lot of twists and turns with Powell, but he is committed and not going anywhere.

SHOULD BE IN

OL Isaiah Hookfin, FB Dulles — Texas recently put an offer on the table for Hookfin and instantly became his leader. The Longhorns will host him on an official visit on Dec. 7, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him shut things down soon after.

CB Kenyatta Watson II, Grayson (GA) — There have been rumors about Watson’s status, which is why he is in this category. But the Texas commit has maintained that he is locked in with the Longhorns and is currently slated to sign early.

S Chris Adimora, Mayfair (Calif.) — Adimora picked Texas this summer and seemed pretty solid. However, he recently made an official visit to Arizona State and is looking at other potential trips. Still, we expect him to sign with Texas.

HIGH CONFIDENCE

RB Noah Cain, IMG Academy (Fla.) — With John Emery locked in at LSU, the door is wide open for Texas to seal the deal with Cain. He loved his recent official visit, and Texas is surging on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Penn State and Georgia, however, remain big threats.

LB Caleb Johnson, Fullerton College — Johnson was blown away on his recent official visit and named Texas his leader. The Longhorns are still in the pole position as of today, but Oregon, a childhood dream school, is set to host him for an official visit this coming weekend.

A NOTCH BELOW HIGH

OL Javonne Shepherd, North Forest — Shepherd is currently committed to Texas, but he is the biggest question mark in this class. The four-star prospect did not make is scheduled trip to Texas A&M over the weekend but will make an OV in January. Shepherd won’t be in until the ink dries on his NLI. With all of this said, we feel pretty good about Texas keeping him in the fold.

ATH Bru McCoy, Mater Dei (Calif.) — Don’t look now, but Texas has a huge opportunity to land one of the country’s top prospects. With uncertainty surrounding favorite USC (yes, even with Clay Heltonstaying put), Texas is gaining plenty of steam in this one. McCoy loved his official visit, and his family knows there is stability in Austin. We are feeling cautiously optimistic here.

WORK TO DO

RB Trey Sanders, IMG Academy (Fla.) — Sanders loved his official visit to Texas, and the Longhorns are in the Top 3 with Alabama and Florida. The five-star prospect is sold on the program and Stan Drayton, but it appears his parents want him closer to home — Sanders is originally from Port St. Joe in Florida.

WR Elijah Higgins, Austin Bowie — Texas looked to have fallen way behind with Higgins, but the Longhorns are right in the thick of things thanks to on field success and improvement in the passing game. Higgins was impressed on his recent OV, but Stanford is still going to be tough to beat.

OL Myron Cunningham, Iowa Central C.C. — Texas recently extended an offer to Cunningham and really wants a junior college offensive lineman this cycle. Oklahoma is surging after hosting him for an OV. Texas will look to get him on campus and make a move of its own next month.

S Jalen Catalon, Mansfield Legacy — Arkansas appears to have the momentum in this recruitment, but it’s definitely not time to panic. Texas impressed Catalon on his unofficial visit in September, and the Longhorns will receive his final official visit this winter before he makes a decision in January.

OL Andrew Coker, Katy Taylor — Coker has been committed to TCU since May, but Texas has continued to work on him. Texas will need to get him on campus to have a shot here.

OL Bamidele Olaseni, Garden City C.C. — Olaseni has been silent about his recruitment. The Longhorns recently offered and until he makes a trip to Austin, he’ll remain in this category.

DL DeMarvin Leal, Converse Judson — Texas is still working hard on Leal behind the scenes but was unable to get him on campus for a game this season. If he doesn’t make a trip in the next couple of weeks, this one will be over.

CB Marcus Banks, Spring Dekaney — Texas has reentered the picture for Banks and recently hosted him for an unofficial visit. Still, Banks does not plan on using an OV on Texas, so the Longhorns will have to work past that.

PURGATORY

RB DJ Williams, Sebring (Fla.) — Texas recently offered Williams and will get him on campus for an official visit in a couple of weeks. But with UT surging for Cain, it is unclear what Williams’ status is.

WR Kennedy Lewis, Melissa — Lewis appeared ready to commit to Texas before pushing back his decision. If Texas missed on priority targets, it could circle back to Lewis after the early signing period.

LB Marcel Brooks, Flower Mound Marcus — Brooks is committed to LSU, and it’s unclear what kind of interest there is. But where there is smoke, there is fire. Brooks is one to watch up until signing day.

LB Shammond Cooper, St. Louis Trinity Catholic (MO) — With Gbenda already onboard, it is unclear where Cooper stands on the board. It will be interesting to see if UT brings him in for an OV.

VERY SLIM CHANCES

DL Ishmael Sopsher, Amite (La.) — Texas is supposed to receive an official visit, but the Longhorns are on the way outside.

17COMMENTS

CB Kaiir Elam, The Benjamin School (Fla.) — Texas recently offered, but it doesn’t look like anything is going to come of it.

ATH Devonta Lee, Amite (La.) — Lee has talked about making a Texas OV with Sopsher, but LSU is his likely landing destination.

I wonder if staff turnover will potentially open some doors for a grad transfer LB. That seems like a position where steady and experienced can really help shore things up.

I wouldn't write him off completely, that's dumb to do with offensive linemen with upside, but he'd be my least favorite take of the class. He's a massive guy but doesn't have the athleticism or feet to play tackle imo, and so he'd be a massive guard, and how many successful 6'8 guards do you see? To me, he'd most likely be an Urquidez 5 year down the depth chart guy with more upside. Maybe he'd help with Connor and Foster?

This is not going to be a big bidding war anywhere. Frankly, that shit is usually set aside in the early days of a cycle by the shitbag schools that do it. Springing for a totally new process after allegiances were long ago made for other guys is harder to do than folks give it credit. ATM bought some trash last year in this manner, but those were always guys with their handout and part of the equation.

Miami isn't exhibiting the same prowess and getting the same buzz that it has in the past, even when the coaches sucked. That could be a slow train wreck for the next few years. The local school seems to get punished when they slow play a guy until other big boys are interested. Not saying he won't wind up at Miami, but he's not all-in on them. Auburn? Who fucking knows. There have been murmurings of the Auburn money putting a package together to run Malzahn and his $30-ish million buyout out of the state. But, hey, they can produce TBs, so wtf?

Here's the thing for me - everyone would know if Higgins had gotten into Stanford after him re-applying over a month ago. Why hasn't that happened yet? As to Bru McCoy, if they're actually going to make a "business decision" as a family, they have to be weighing the reality that his 3 years on campus will be filled with program turmoil at USC. There's almost no way around that at this point. Texas feels good about McCoy, but that could be delusion. I said "1" because I feel like one of the two recruitments falls in our favor.

Without being able to go into much right now, I think it's reasonable to say that the better prospect is preferred and taken if both were to want to commit.

I think they need speed at WR and Houston brings it. I not only like the take, I really want him to not get squeezed in the event they can sign both EH and McCoy.

Holland is offering as much the opinions of the handlers he deals with as he is his own opinions. In reading this post from him, I have to believe that he doesn't work with a single employee in the UT AD. He's simply and flatly wrong in like 4 different bullets. It almost feels like obscure performance art as a recruitnik troll or something.
