This.

Also, players getting a year older and working within the same system tend to show improvement, ceteris peribus. Attribute value to Mehringer based on this season's performance for a single player if you must, but I'd prefer to judge Meh on his history of performance and his antics with both Garrett Wilson and Higgins. The guy's a loser and he should go steal someone else's money before Herman wrongheadedly elevates him to OC or something.

... ceteris paribus or caeteris paribus

....veni, vidi, vici

evidently Hemphill-Mapps only played in 3 games (0 catches) and only returned a kick in their last game of the year

he isn't listed as having a number on their roster

evidently he had committed to Syracuse but it fell apart (long thread here) - either he was asked to hold off on committing or he asked them to hold off on it?

whole thing looks weird

He chose poorly.

I’m seeing concerns about Mehringer’s recruiting pop up in relation to him potentially taking the James Madison job. We are flat out better off when that dipshit finds an exit. I don’t give a single fuck if it impacts a recruitment or two, and you shouldn’t either. Celebrate if that imbecile finds something else to do.

And forget about Bru McCoy.

Opens the question, the last two coaches brought their friends here despite not being top notch coaches, as the University demands. Were they not allowed to find the best coaches due to financial constraints? Or, were they just too dumb and loyal to see the coaches for who they are?

I might understand that flaw in Strong, but then Herman did the same damn thing. I have never understood it since we supposedly had to give in to anything he wanted to come here.

Does CDC have the sand to correct this seemingly systemic issue?

Texas shouldn't be the fat pig you bring your buddies to feed off of.

That's what coaches do. Sometimes because they're blind. Loyal to a fault/whatever. Other times  it's just to get coaches you know on board in a pinch to help you kick off your new gig, and then adjust from there.  You gotta get you and a staff on the 'crootin trail asap, so you get in a rush and throw the best you can together in a very short amount of time.

Going into year three, Herman has had more than enough time to evaluate his staff and other coaches on other staffs/risers, and should be adjusting his staff for the better.

We.Shall.See.

The issue is that coaches, as a collective, don't represent the intellectual vanguard of our society. Strong is an out and out buffoon. He posts here as ztejas and used to post on Shaggy as cdt23 if you need more evidence. Herman isn't demonstrably more intelligent when you listen to him or watch his decisions around the program or on game day. He's not going to detach from those with whom he's experienced success unless he's forced to do so. While we can look at the decisions these guys have made, ahead of them making those decisions, and know that they're about to do something really stupid, they're not self-aware enough to do so on their own. We knew hiring Shawn Watson was buffoonery. We knew that Mehringer and Warehime weren't qualified for jack shit at Texas. The results in the aftermath of those maneuvers went as predicted. Meanwhile, Strong appeared shellshocked by the results and Herman's seems befuddled as well.

There's a significant amount of smoke regarding the premise that Mehringer might actually be in line to be groomed as the OC here while Beck is shown the door. Beck didn't call plays after Tulsa this season, and I'd like to see him stick around as a recruiter and QB coach. I'd like to see Mehringer shown the door and the pat on his back as he's escorted to the exit should include a "kick me" sign surreptitiously placed on his shoulder.

Isn’t Cunningham supposed to announce toda, Presumably for Arkansas?

Seems odd, but I hoping that there are bigger fish to fry on the grad transfer hunt. Kennedy offered the chance to get a guy in for Spring Practice, but there might be better quality players who will be available for summer enrollment like Anderson was. Not sure if this is a calculated risk or one where the coaches know of several other likely high-quality grad transfers.

I've been anti-Mehringer and Warehime for a long time, but I think you're giving Herman too little credit.  After last season, he effectively demoted both Warehime and Mehringer, moving Meekins to look over Meh's shoulder and replacing Warehime with Herb Hand.  He also tried to go get some more Xs & Os firepower when he tried to hire Noel Mazzone as an analyst.

Should he have cut ties with Mehringer and Warehime after last year?  Almost certainly.  Herman is clearly overvaluing staff continuity (probably because he believes it to be a reflection of himself as head coach)--remember that Urban Meyer made a huge deal when he fired Zach Smith that Smith was the only coach Meyer had ever fired.

But to say that that Herman's hiring history here shows that he is "befuddled" by having to evaluate staff is hyperbolic even for you, CTJ.

With that said, those two motherfuckers better not be on staff next year.  And Herman ought to do everything in his power to keep Beck and bring in Beatty.

No offer for Jay Williams and no offer for Tommy Kennedy....what in the wide world of sports is going on? We getting Cunningham?! (I kid).

If this staff is going to take projects, seems they prefer to do it with HS kids like we did with our last 2 classes.

At what point does CDC enter the picture? Does he let Herman run his staff as he sees fit and let him tie his own noose if he continues to stick by poor assistance coaches or does he intervene and compel Herman to make better hires?

Why do people think that CDC will have any influence on staff hires?

Patterson tried to do this with Barnes and Barnes rightfully told him to fuck off. Athletic directors should not be involved in assistant hires. CDC will either back Herman's hires or he needs to go find a different coach.

CDC knows who needs his help and who does not. Herman not only likes to discuss every detail with CDC but he also needs it. He's been a HC 4 years and they both took over a fractured program/AD. CDC was very active with Patterson at tcu and will always be hands on here which is a very good thing. Herman has showed us his smarts, passion, immaturity and told us he is learning on the job. CDC also knew Herm when he was getting started at Rice, you want him keeping Herman on his toes.

Eddie Reese, I am sure that conversation is very different....CDC is a pro.

This. My ideal staff next year would be Beck being retained to coach QBs (he has done a great job with Sam), Beatty brought in as a WR coach and even as high as a Co-OC. Mehringer and Warehime out, and we bring in a second DL coach who is a strong recruiter, or get rid of Giles altogether for an upgrade and add a best available.

My ideal staff would be:  Let go of Mehringer, Warehime, and Giles.  Hire Phil Longo as OC; hire Beatty as WR coach; move Beck to WR coach; move Meekins back to TE coach.  Hire a badass DL coach.

What I think is most likely is:  Let go of Mehringer and Warehime.  Keep Beck at QB coach.  Hire Beaty as WR coach.  Move Meekins back to TEs.  Hire DL coach/recruiter type.

I don't want athletic directors involved in assistant hires. I love CDC but no reason he should be involved.

In what world does CDC know about the recruiting landscape, schematic fit with Herman's system, and other criteria used to evaluate assistant hires? This is why athletic director's should stay out of assistant hires. Athletic directors hire the head coaches that are the "experts" or "knowledgeable" ones when it comes to assistant hires. If the head coach makes bad assistant hires that's on the head coach and justification for why the head coach isn't the right guy for the job.

Herman left with his own devices will be a victim of his own hubris/arrogance.  A strong voice (CDC) used as checks and balances will keep the stupid from coming out hopefully.

Do you want Chris Beatty more than David Beaty?

It was strongly hinted at that CDC played a role in Gary Patterson's offensive staff overhaul after their 4-8 season in 2013.

But if a coach is a problem on staff, CDC needs to know or be involved and can't rely on the football coach to keep someone around that needs to go.

I have no issues with an AD acting as a check against certain hires like Casey Horny.

But if the head coach doesn't think an assistant is a problem that's the head coaches decision. They know more about the recruiting landscape and schematic fit in their system than a AD that's not involved in the football world.

The staff is built around the head coaches preferences. If things don't work out that's on the head man.

Watch out, guys.  Texasstrong12 has real beef with how CDC helped Gary Patterson go from 4-8 to a top 3 finish.

Or maybe Garry Patterson is just a very good coach.

Also, I wouldn't say the offensive overhaul has been effective in the long-run. TCU ran off Meacham. TCU's offense has been shit under Cumbie. It's almost like there might be some stylistic differences with the head coach?
