So basically this is exactly what CTJ has said  - Texas likes their chances with Sanders and McCoy more than anyone thinks they should and they are basically 'all in' on those two.

But we're doing this by sending a coach who is interviewing for another job on the same day that he tells a kid he should come to Texas.  And McCoy's lead recruiter is allegedly one of the favorites for the JMU job.  So that's interesting.

Never mind that Sander's lead recruiter at Alabama has already taken another job.

I heard Meh was a mid tier candidate at JMU, but wth would I know about that.

If this is really the case and we lose out on McCoy, Cain, and Sanders, then that would be a monster fail. Saban is doing in homes with Deondrick Glass as backups to his backups to his backup plans, and we seem to have our thumb up our asses on contingencies. We would still have a very solid class at WR even without McCoy, but we desperately need another RB in this class or else they better guarantee us Zachary Evans on pain of death next year.

I wouldn't say losing out on McCoy or Sanders is a fail. Not ending up with a viable alternative to Cain would be.

Whiffing on three of your highest priority targets late is a fail. I don't care how you spin it. We have done great in parts of our class with some big OOS wins and nice evals, but getting even one of those guys would be a huge swing.

Glass and Stevenson at this point.

Listen, Stevenson is a stud. I think CTJ said he was the #2 guy on the staff's board (excluding cain). And hopefully we can sell him.

Glass isn't an alternative, he's not even a consolation prize. He's the walking embodiment of egg on this staff's face.

Stevenson would actually be a good add, but the guy is definitely not a burner. Between him and Ingram, our backfield next year might be more of what we saw this year with a dearth of explosive plays.

Justin Wells recruiting update

We're roughly around 144 hours away from National Signing Day, a damn holiday in my home. Like @Eric Nahlin mentioned the other day, splitting the signing day over two periods (late Dec & early Feb) takes away a little of the anxious excitement.

But when that first fax comes in next Wednesday morning, it'll be cathartic. When recruiting classes begin to come to a conclusion, it's almost like starting a new year, a cleansing of sorts.

When 2019's cycle is complete, we'll jump into 2020 with a renewed vigor, the beginning of something new. It not only applies in college sports, but life. The highs and lows of 2018 will be exchanged with the anticipation of the 2019 Texas Football team and building the 2020 squad, a resolution of sorts.

But before we can accomplish any of that, we're at the 2:00 minute warning. It's the final days before ink goes to paper when the silly season begins. Every morsel of info, valid or invalid, gets parsed So let's recap where Texas stands with its final targets and see if the Horns can land, between, a Top 5-10 class.

Trey Sanders, RB. Team Sanders is a smart bunch. They know his full value, like the schools still pursuing, and are covering every base. Alabama, Georgia, Texas, and Florida look to be the hats on his table. This recruitment is one in which one of the three programs left at the altar did everything they could to snag his signature. But at the end of the day, I'd give Bama the advantage.

Noah Cain, RB. Another recruitment in which Texas has done virtually everything they could to grab the four-star from IMG via Denton Guyer. Cain likes (insert a dozen or so schools) and picking one will be difficult because I'm pretty sure he wakes up with a different leader on the daily. First it was LSU, then Georgia, then Texas, then LSU, then Ohio State, then Texas, then Georgia, then Penn State, which is where I'd predict he goes today. Cain wouldn't be a big loss, if you replace him with someone as good. That remains to be seen.

Bru McCoy, ATH. Tom Herman and Drew Mehringer stopped by the crib yesterday for their in-home visit with Horace and his family, including the grandparents. Another recruitment where UT did an outstanding job building the relationship and putting themselves in the best possible position to land this freak from Cali. Texas led at one point, but it's tough landing a five-star in-state, and even more so out-of-state. Couple that with the addition of the QB Whisperer, Kliff Kingsbury, who turned Antione Wesley into a NFL draft pick, and the odds stack up against you. The McCoys will host Kingsbury today and then begin his official visit on Friday. I'm not putting up the white flag here just yet, but it'll be tough.

Marcus Washington, WR. This happens every cycle. The bigger, more prestigious program steals an big-time prospect, then the in-state school makes that final push, hoping to poke holes in his burnt orange glasses. "Come to Mizzou, stay close to home, parents can see you, Texas has two dozen WRs, SEC blah blah blah." Of course the kid will listen, it's only natural. But know this; Missouri hasn't put in a 1/10th of the work building a relationship with the Washingtons that Texas has. In recruiting, that matters. He's still solid to the Longhorns until I'm told otherwise.

Peyton Powell, ATH. This happens when the local college gets a brand new coach and brings in that aroma of 'new coach' smell, like new shoes or a new car. It really breaks down to this; Texas will give him an opportunity to play quarterback, just like Texas Tech and Baylor will. The difference is his chances of playing that position greatly increase with the other two suitors, even though he'd probably be maximized at nickel. So, he either really wants to be a QB or he really wants to play for a national brand that is already playing for conference titles. Your call, Peyton.

Caleb Johnson, LB. It goes without saying how important this guy is for this class. He moved his announcement date back to next Monday so that he'll get to visit Colorado this weekend. Hey, Caleb, I don't blame you, I hear Boulder is nice this time of year. All I'll say is that I like Caleb. A lot.

This weekend. Texas is set to host some of its biggest commitments this Friday-Sunday, including De'Gabriel Floyd, Roschon Johnson, and Jordan Whittington. They'll also host a few others, like Jalen Catalon and Isaiah Hookfin, and potentially a couple of guys that'll likely come in quietly. I mean, we are six days until we start to conclude the 2019 cycle.

You never know what could happen. That's why it's holiday at Casa de Wells.

If the purpose of that piece was convey information not previously known then it gets an F minus.
