Remember that 247 5* doesn't mean composite 5*.

But this is amazing for so many reasons.

Ah, damnit. I thought it was his composite. Back to my original assumption that he'll come up just short. Still great though

Bobby Burton: Tuesday

The third week of January used to be when recruiting was heading down the homestretch. Now, the time period feels almost anti-climactic. Sure, there are a couple of important players at positions of need that Texas and other teams are still chasing. But, by and large, this recruiting class is almost done, and it has been that way since mid-December.

This is the second recruiting class for college football to utilize two different signing periods, one in December and one in February. In retrospect, it seems like the dual signing period approach has been successful - it has accomplished in large part what the NCAA wanted. It's been a less hectic December and January for college coaches and recruits, alike. No longer are the holiday months filled with constant flip-flops of so many top players. In fact, only one player of the state's top 25 prospescts, according to the 247Sports Composite, did not sign in the December signing period. That's partly why Texas, and other schools, have been able to accelerate its recruitment of the next class.

**

Texas had a virtual who's who of 2020 recruits on campus over the weekend. After arriving mid-afternoon, most of the recruits saw the Horns' basketball team beat OU that evening. The Texas football program had a solid 10 rows of seats just for recruits and their parents in the lower bowl of the Erwin Center just behind the student section.

**

Numbers for the 2020 recruiting class will be interesting. It may not be a huge class because of a couple of reasons:

1. There are not that many graduating seniors. I count just 12 for next year.

2. Texas really doesn't have many players who could be considered early entrants to the NFL after the 2019 campaign (is there one other than Sam Cosmi or maybe Sam Ehlinger if he goes wild next season?).

Of course, there will always be additional attrition, whether it is injury-related, a player giving up football altogether, academics or transfers. Some of it will also depend on how Texas finishes out this recruiting season. The Horns have about five more spots they could fill, although two of them would likely be grad transfers which won't count beyond this season. Altogether, I don't see Texas going above 20 scholarships next season and that number may be on the high end.

**

At any rate, Texas and Tom Herman have pieced together two stellar recruiting classes in 2018 and 2019. Because of those classes, I feel like there's getting ready to be better competition in practices on campus than the team will see on many Saturdays. That's how a program takes the next step.

I feel the Horns are now just that one recruiting class away from being as talented as any program in the country so long as they can sign a class for 2020 similar to the previous two. That's why what occurred over the weekend is so important for the future of the program.

I'm quite sure we didn't push for Henry. When Hand met him and there was no mention of a visit, it seems like we were passing.

I do want us to pick up a JUCO. Two signees is too few for my liking, even with a robust transfer market.

Willie Tyler, Freshman JUCO grad is an option. Three years to play three & can redshirt if needed. 6’7 330 with good athleticism. Our coaches started following him not too long ago, way under the radar.

I haven't been paying close attention so maybe I missed it but have we even offered Henry? Pretty clear we were just keeping him warm and he's way down the priority list.

Yeah, it's clear they are more interested in the JUCO/grad transfers.

Maybe if Shepherd flips they will offer Henry but I wouldn't bet on it. I'm sure they know Shepherd isn't a sure thing.

I don’t think they anticipate signing either one.

Baylor fans are mad too.

Ok Mr. Jayarajah, now tell me this; when do senior film highlights from the first portion of the season typically start getting released?

Whoa, they upped his ranking in the middle of the hs football season? That seems so unfair. Waaaaah.

Everyone agreed at the time that he committed to Texas that:

1.  Owens was a freakish athlete in that his measurables were 5** worthy.

2.  He had little varsity tape for various reasons.

Then kid has a great senior year and puts up tape that matches his athleticism in terms of dominance.  Goes to All-Star game and plays exceptionally well against other elite recruits.

And then people think its politics or a BOMC that the kid gets a huge ratings bump.  Fucking idiots.

Agree - the post visit news was rather sparse. I trust Hand will make a good evaluation and secure a grad transfer/JuCo to assist us in 2019.

So "Trust the Hand"...sounds good.

It means his 247 grade is moving from 95 to 97 or 98. Probably moves him into the Top 50 in the composite.

ESPN left him out of their top 300

Reminds me of how SEC fans get pissed about how Bama commits get late bumps, as if Bama isn't actively trapdooring kids who don't keep their stock up, and trying to add late bloomers

Now, imagine if they had landed him.......

Or better yet, flipped to them at the last second.

Aggy recruited most of their class early in the cycle. There are positives and negatives to that approach. It's almost like their idiot fanbase doesn't pay attention to anything other than "WHOOP!" and "SEC! SEC! SEC!"

Did one of the other services update their rankings as well?  Trying to figure out how Hookfin jumped up 120+ spots in the composite today.

Believe it or not, yes. It's a SEC Conference rule for JUCO transfers. It's why Gary Johnson played for Texas and not Nick Saban.

I don't think we had much of a shot of getting Nick Saban to play for Texas anyway.

We already had our Rooster Andrews.

Thank God for him he has long arms or he might have a hard time reaching around to wipe his ass.

There's always the Mangino Option.  Trainers might not like it much though....

again, I know that’s what goes through your head.  but what does it really mean?

Bragging on my 'croots.

it's what you say when a Texas recruit gets a bump.  It's just the BOMC again--bragging on my croots!
