Texas recruiting notes 2019

I’m not going to get my hopes up on an Alabama “student athlete” qualifying for a Texas graduate program. I’d be a lot cooler if he did.
First thing I thought about..

Didn't we have a USC QB a while back that wanted to grad transfer but couldn't for some reason?

Everywhere he has gone as offensive coordinator his offense has averaged better results per S&P metrics than Orlando's defenses have when he was defensive coordinator.  Now, you might can attribute it to Beck having more talent than some places than Orlando did or small sample size, but you can't deny that Orlando has been poor some, too.  However, he gets the free pass.  Why?  Because of the part of your sentence "last year."  Orlando's results say he may throw out a stinker, but you feel that he is on an upward trajectory because his most recent results have been good.

Maybe, just maybe, Todd Orlando is getting better at his job the longer he does it.  This is year 17 for him as a defensive coordinator.  Maybe he is continuing to learn and grow.  Maybe Beck in his 8th year as OC will start to have similar luck.  Maybe he won't.  We were all pretty damn sure that Manny _iaz was a fool just a few short years ago.  The guy wondering if we can hold onto Orlando for five more years might be wanting to seem him fired after game 1 next year.

To sum up, I don't think anyone on this staff deserves kudos or a firing based on what they did last year.

First off, I wasn't a fan of the Beck before last season, and I liked the Orlando hire before last season, so you can throw out your whole "last year" spiel.

I never said Orlando is on an upward trajectory. I think he's shown himself to be a good DC over the last 3 years (that's really all I've watched of him, so I can't comment on Utah State and prior).  I thought Orlando was a good DC based on watching UH play.  Yeah, he has bad games but so does just about every DC. I do expect our defense to regress this year due to loss of experienced talent.   I thought Beck was a bad OC based on watching Nebraska and tOSU.  Sure, Beck had great numbers at tOSU but those offenses were stacked, they blew out shitty teams and then struggled against good teams, in part due to poor coaching and play calling.  Beck did the same shit at UT last year that he's done at other stops. There was no evolution in him last year and there are no signs that he will magically evolve into a good OC this year.  His use of personnel and play calling don't indicate that he does a good job running an offense.

I never expected Herman to fire Beck in the offseason, but that doesn't mean the Beck hire wasn't a mistake and isn't still a mistake.  I get why Herman wouldn't want to fire his OC after one year, but we'll likely still pay for a bad OC hire out the gate two years in a row. If that sounds better to you, then fire the OC after Year 1, then that's fine.  I get it. You're a coach and you think fans are too quick to call for firing the coach.  I'm not usually leading the mob to fire coaches, but Beck, Warehime, and Mehringer have shown themselves to be poor coaches. The latter two had no business getting this type of job in teh first place and while Beck had experience at big schools, his job there wasn't impressive.

Anyways, I'm done with this conversation. Have a good Friday folks.

I agree with all of this, but the fans that freak out need to consider the floor. If Texas wins 7 or 8 games and signs a 25 man class, there is no way it's ranked lower than 10-15, IMO. I think it's important to remember that our worst case scenario is having the second most talented roster in our conference.

You see the worst case scenario as being the second most talented team in our conference.

But what I SEE, when you say that is the absolute worst case scenario, which is being behind fucking Oklahoma at anything into perpetuity. Fuck that motherfucking cunt ass shit.

The lethargy (read: arrogance) that Herman has approached staff deficiencies with is certainly disturbing and makes me think that his narcissism/stubbornness are going to cause him to be way too slow to fix mistakes. Beck hire sucked when it was made, it still sucks one year after, and it's going to suck two years after, as well.  We'll likely win 2-3 less games this year than we otherwise could with an above average OC. Herman can't afford that kind of setback, yet he's walking right into it with confidence.

Even with big wins over the aggy ring bearer at FSU, blowU with big game Bobby and the most prolific offense the SEC could muster in last year's bowl game...his claim to fame is still as an O-coordinator that improved the offense everywhere he held that title, including a championship with a 3rd string QB. After this Texas program has a little more success and he starts to think of himself as more of a CEO coach, maybe he'll bring in the latest offensive whiz (whoever that may be) and let them do their thing even if it's a bit different than his philosophy.

The problem is finding the latest offensive whiz, and unless they're at a lower level program (which may or may not make their success suspect) most won't make a lateral move even if it means more money. With so many programs dumping their head coaches in 5 years or less, there always seem to be plenty of HC jobs for the latest, greatest coordinators who aspire to that..

From Ousucks 247

Bru McCoy is one of the nation’s elite prospects, rated No. 17 in the 247Sports Composite and No. 4 by 247Sports.

McCoy is a dominant player on both sides of the ball and is a high level prospect at receiver and linebacker. He has a rare combination of size, toughness and athleticism and always competes at a high level as well.

McCoy took a visit to Texas over the weekend and the Horns made a big impression on him.

“The trip was great, it definitely met and even exceeded my expectations,” McCoy said. “The coaches were great with me and seemed very genuine. They kept it real and were upfront and honest with me. With some coaches, you can kind of tell they're just recruiting you, but the Texas staff seemed very genuine.

“Coach Herman is definitely a player’s coach and has a lot of energy. He’s the type of guy I would like to play for. All the coaches did a good job of talking about the future of the program, where things are at and where they want to take it. I was very impressed with everything I saw.”

McCoy said the staff really went all out and even showed his highlight tape on the jumbotron inside the football stadium.

“That was pretty crazy,” McCoy said. “They made everything pretty special for me and were very specific in how they want to use me. I met with coach Meekins (WR coach) and he talked about their philosophy and how they utilize their receivers. They want me as an X in their offense and feel I would fit in really well.

“Then I met with the defensive coaches and coach Orlando (DC) said they want me to be a designated pass rusher on 3rd down or obvious passing situations. They run a 3-4 scheme that is similar to what we do at Mater Dei where I rush off the edge more so then drop in to coverage.

“A lot of schools have told me they want me to play both ways and like me as an athlete but no one has laid it out like that for me the way they did. So I would be a full time receiver on offense and a pass rush specialist on defense and I think that fits my skill set pretty well.”

The city of Austin and the campus in general all made a positive impression as well.

“Austin is a beautiful city, I wasn’t expecting all that,” McCoy said. “It’s a pretty special place and you can tell coach Herman has things going in the right direction.

“They showed me who’s staying and who’s leaving and there’s a lot of opportunity there. The coaches didn’t promise anything but said if you have to come in and put in the work, you'll play. Basically, you get out what you put in and that works for me.”

McCoy said he’ll definitely be back for an official visit as well.

“The two schools I know I’ll officially visit are Texas and USC,” McCoy said. “I’m going to be taking an unofficial visit to Oklahoma as well and if things go as expected, I’ll be taking an official there too.

“I was supposed to visit OU over Spring Break but I had hernia surgery and had to move it. I was going to visit OU and Texas back to back at that time but had to move those around. I don’t have any official dates yet but I know want to visit Texas when they host USC, the atmosphere should be insane for that one.

“The USC visit will likely be at the end of the season, that’s usually when they like to have their big visit weekends. As for the OU trip, I want to talk with Bookie (Brendan Radley-Hiles) and see what he thinks is best. He’s a smart guy and will know when a good weekend will be.”

McCoy said he’s still planning to make his decision at the All-American Game in San Antonio in January.

“I want to try and take all five of my trips if I can,” McCoy said. “The other schools I’m talking with right now are Florida State, Washington, Oregon and UCLA. I like coach Taggart (FSU head coach) a lot, he was recruiting me hard at Oregon so we have a good relationship.

“I really like the Washington staff a lot and how they recruit. Coach Petersen personally hits me up a lot and I'm comfortable with the staff. Oregon has been on me hard for awhile as well and I have some teammates going there with Keyon (Ware Hudson) and Mase (Funa). I just recently started talking more with UCLA and I think Chip Kelly is a very good coach and will have them going in the right direction

JFC, I'm making the point that we don't have a recruiting issue, and I wasn't talking about anything in perpetuity. We've out recruited OU a lot the past 8 years, and have little to show for it. I would rather beat them and win conference championships than out recruit them.

It's not one or the other. We have had (and continue to have) recruiting issues at certain positions, and these are compounded by mediocre or bad coaching and development.

The best programs are very good to elite at all of these things.

I don't think we're arguing different things. I'm saying we've had a lot of problems that have nothing to do with recruiting. We haven't finished the season ranked in the top 15 since 2009. The consistency of our underperformance is impressive.

As much I and others have ragged on the coaches today, talent acquisition and evaluation has absolutely been an issue for this program as well.

Do you think the instability and coaching changes torpedoes talent acquisition and evals? It's the only way to explain how other schools do more with less. Do you think Herman's staff, despite their shortcomings, is doing a better job of recruiting fits to a system than late-Mack or Charlie?

Finance degree here. Done plenty of shit associated with dealing with the IBs and VCs of the world and the premise that ND has some sort of advantage over UT in that arena is laughable. They’re both up there alongside the Ivys, Michigan, UVA, Stanford and a handful of others. No one has to justify a fucking thing from one of those schools to anyone and none of them get to sneer at the others. The fucking ND guys claiming otherwise are flat out full of shit.

No one's saying we don't have multiple issues. We do have a lot of problems. And just because a street has 10 potholes is no reason to ignore one say "Meh, we don't need to fix this one because shit, there's 9 others." It's easy to say we'll recruit better if we win fucking games, and it's probably true, but that that's the same kind of maddening shit that drove most of us crazy as Mack Brown under-performed here even at the height of his success after 2005. In fact, it's a pretty legitimate and logical argument to say that BECAUSE we've been an under-performing shitshow for so long, it's more important than ever to plug all the holes we have in all facets, including recruiting, because we don't have any margin for error. You want the kind of roster to get us back on the top, well, we need to recruit well everywhere.

Personally, the whole fucking attitude of fixing one thing that should help the others along is maddening to me. I don't care if we win 10 games, why don't we fucking fix ALL of it and become like Ohio State, and Alabama, instead of pontificating on how Giles will be a good recruiter again if we fucking win games. It's fucking stupid bullshit. Excel at fucking everything. We have the resources and location that should allow us to do that easier than almost any other college in the nation.

None of this shit is recruiting related. Take this crap somewhere else and leave this thread for recruiting related information.

The thread policing shit is so fucking old it hurts. The status of the staff is directly related to recruiting. Coaching and talent acquisition are inexorable and claiming otherwise is either disingenuous or ignorant.

The problem with the conversations is that they get so convoluted. There are too many points in there. I don't disagree with a lot of what you wrote, but don't ever lump me into the win 10 games crowd you fucking asshole.

My preference is to find a Delorean, travel back to Bellaire in late November of 2016, and shake Herman vigorously until he agrees not to hire a terrible offensive staff in the first place. But I don’t have one of those, so I’m stuck with your weak ass strategy of crossing my fingers and mumbling things like “but consistency” and “i’m not a corchez!?!”, so yeah, man, you nailed it.

Grab me some Bitcoins when you are back there.  Thanks in advance.

These last 3 pages are nearly as annoying as the aggy acquaintance of mine texting me unprompted late last night about what a mean spirited, classless asshole Tom Herman is because he made fun of an opposing player. He called him a "titty twister" and said he is a bully and will never succeed here. This made me think that aggy is actually selling Herman being a meanie as a negative recruiting tactic. And then I get to come here and read some more flowery prose about what a collection of shit-bag coaches we have on the offensive side of the ball. And Giles sucks too, of course. Good times...

I guess, for the collective, I can offer two thoughts, good sir.

1) You’re welcome

2) Go fuck yourself

A lot of you guys showing up to whine act like there is something else we were supposed to do while you were gone. Should we have sat silent? Ain’t shit happened.

Would sure be nice to create a small dent in LSU's backyard for a change, in tandem with a good to great season on the field.  Stingley could be a real possibility if The Rosy Finch Boyz, LLC put out an inferior product this fall.

Seeing the value of recruiting the QB position yet? It was definitely a recruiting issue - you pass on Andrew Luck and RGIII for Gilbert Godfried, Case McCoy, and a bag of Ash rocks,  then you're going to get f'ing rocked.

But that was then.  Now, I'm excited about our QB room and the quality of the depth.  We've gone from Swoopes and McCoy to Ehlinger, Buechele, Thompson, and Rising, with a Johnson on the way.

As far as struggles with coaches - every school has them, even the precious Bama and OhState, so let's not act like they are a beacon of perfection. Shit, Saban blows through OC's like Candy blows through an FSU dorm room.  In college football, the coaching carousel is always turning, and not one school is immune to that.

OSU fans turn on Meyer and his OC's every time that offense struggles. Every time Saban gets 40 or more rung up on him, the Bama fans come out of their woodsheds crying that he's outdated, can't handle athletic qb's, games' passed him by.  All fans bitch, at every school, about the same shit you pussies bitch about on here.
