So... we're going to beat the brakes off them next year?

Yeah, them losing 4 out of 5 starters along one of the best OLs in college football as well as one of the most gifted athletes to ever play the QB position, I would say OU's offense might take a step back next year. Of course, we lose 7 starters off the defense to graduation and #8 if Jones leaves early. I like where we are along the DL and the secondary should have minimal drop off, especially once Cook and Green get more game experience. However we should be worried about the LB drop off.

Pinnacle QB Spencer Rattler ruled ineligible for rest of season after violating school policy

RICHARD OBERT  |  ARIZONA REPUBLIC

Phoenix Pinnacle senior Spencer Rattler, who two weeks ago became the state's first quarterback to surpass 11,000 passing yards in a high school football career, will not return to the field this season.

Mike Rattler, Spencer's father, told azcentral sports on Tuesday night that his son is ineligible for the rest of the season, including the playoffs, after violating a district code of conduct policy.

"We can't say anything more on that," said Mike Rattler in reference to what the violation entailed.

Pinnacle coach Dana Zupke would not comment on the situation. Calls and emails to school officials were not immediately returned.

Spencer Rattler, considered the top high school senior quarterback in the nation who was MVP of the Elite 11 at The Opening in Texas this summer, committed to Oklahoma before his junior season.

Mike Rattler said he and his son reached out to Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley to inform him of the situation. "There is nothing on his permanent record," Mike said. "We discussed everything with Coach Riley."

Mike Rattler also said he had Spencer address the Pinnacle team on Tuesday to apologize for his actions.

Last Thursday, when it was discovered that Spencer Rattler wouldn't be playing the next night in an ESPNU game against Scottsdale Chaparral, Rattler told azcentral sports he had a sprained MCL. He attended the Senior Night game and supported his teammates on the sideline.

"We met with the administration at the school," Mike Rattler said. "We discussed how we need to handle the situation. We were rushed for time. They advised us on what we could say and we came up with our own narrative, feeling we could get past it."

Spencer Rattler practiced with the team last Wednesday evening. But on Thursday he didn't attend the morning walkthrough, and a source told azcentral sports that Rattler wouldn't be playing.

Rattler said it was his knee. Other sources indicated there was something more.

When azcentral sports reached out to Principal Chad Lanese via email on Friday afternoon, asking if there was a violation, he directed the inquiry to Paradise Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Becky Kelbaugh.

Asked if there was a school violation, Kelbaugh responded via email: "Due to the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), PVSchools cannot provide any details about the student in question."

Rattler has been followed all season by a Netflix documentary film crew as one of the featured quarterbacks for the series, "QB1."

"I told him eventually you're going to have to address your team and make a statement about it," Mike Rattler said. "It's a dumb thing and it happened. He's a good kid. He's never been in trouble. He has a 3.8 GPA."

Spencer Rattler said he will continue to support his teammates as they go through the playoffs.

“I have to learn from it and move forward and put it behind me," he said. "I have to learn from my mistakes and grow from it.

"I want to focus on helping the team as much as I can. I'm there for (backup quarterback) J.D. (Johnson) and with everyone 100 percent."

Pinnacle finishes the regular season on Friday against Anthem Boulder Creek and figures to be the No. 2 seed in the 6A state playoffs, which begin next week.

Wheeler and Locke won't be missed. It's funny, both would have probably balled out in the SEC West.

Charles O and Nellie will be big losses.

Hager is a situational player that Herman is playing full time to help a team leader get to the next level.

Boyd still hasn't played a game this season as good as the back half of last season.

Davis has been up and down.

Gary can be awesome, but he's still an athlete figuring out how to play LB.

I think the defense will be about the same next season. About the same possibly better in the secondary and at LB. They'll be very green. I think there will be drop off at DL, but getting Roach back should be a big help.

The corners could be better next year... maybe the secondary as a whole depending upon who develops.  DL takes a step back for a year, even if the talent is better.

I really doubt our corners get better. I think people are judging Boyd for the TCU game too much. OU and Baylor didn't even really try to attack him, including in the ground/screen game. He's really good. When Boyce came in for Davis earlier this year he really struggled. Thompson will be better than Locke in coverage (although he had his chance this year and didn't really win the job) but I doubt Boyce/Cook is as good as Davis/Boyd next year.

This. I think Cook is going to be really solid and just get better from there. Boyce is more of a third corner type to me. He's pretty slender, and not adding weight/mass like Green and Cook despite being in the program longer.

I'd like to see a spirited Green/Boyce battle in the spring, with Green hopefully earning the spot.

The only way the secondary is better next year is if Brandon Jones stays and continues to improve. Sterns also should get better.

I, for one, would like to see our performance over the second half of the season before making definitive evaluations.

Some players could surprise.

Wheeler and Locke won't get much better, not against the Air Raid teams coming up on our schedule. Neither can cover and aren't good in open space.

I bet Brown leaves for the NFL

Reloading is so much more fun than rebuilding.   I'm going out on a limb here and stating now that we will be better on defense next year.  Yancy will earn his paycheck and talent upgrades will show up in shape to play.  Other teams do it, we are just PTSD from the past decade.

Depth at certain positions is still a concern, but leadership will come from Roach and Jones (who returns).  Bimage and Wilbon have good senior years, Coburn and Adeoye are standout sophomores.  Secondary is where the money is made in the B12 with exceptional safety play leading one of the best units in the country.

12-1 going into bowl season, I'm the anthesis of satynash tonight.

I don't think Boyce starts next year. I think that Green will pass him up after a full offseason.

Maybe not next year but I think Sterns moves to corner by the time he goes pro. He's an incredible safety but could be an incredible corner too, and in the NFL corners get paid big and safeties get paid jack.

Ramsey was an AA true freshman safety too

I think Sterns can excel at just about any position he plays in the secondary, but I'd rather see him stick to safety because of his incredible range, instincts, and ball-hawking skills.

If anything, I'd like to see him cross-trained at nickel next season in case something happens to Thompson and we don't land Catalon.

If Jones stays, where does foster play?

Where he's already playing in the lightning dime package. He's so damn good for that role. If they really feel the need to get him in during the OOC slate they might play with him or Sterns at nickel. I've seen a couple people mention rover but if that happens I think that'd be an indictment on not having a good LB there more than anything.

I think the plan is to find someone in the transfer market to bridge the experience gap at Rover until Overshown is ready. When I first saw De'Gabriel Floyd's highlights, I thought he could step in and be Rover, but he's added mass so quickly that I think it's more likely he's a Day 1 Mac who can play Rover in a pinch.

The Roach Experiment is going to forever make me weary of playing big athletic guys at rover

Sterns, Jones, Foster is already really good but a year of film review will do wonders for the pups. They're both assignment sound but also playing a lot on instincts right now. If Jones comes back that will be such a disgusting unit

Agreed.  Best safety trio in the country.

Foster hits, Jones stops, sterns picks

I know this is going back too far, but I think it’s kind of insulting to not mention Glen Halsell & Billy Dale of the 69 NC team.  Also, little Joe Bob Bizell from the mid 70’s, so we have had some nice contributions from Permian.

I'm pretty sure that I gave Billy Dale tickets to Disneyland before the second Holiday Bowl.  I had some tickets that I had won in a raffle or something, and they expired on 12/31.  I made a hornfans post along the lines of "who's doing SoCal on the cheap" and  saying that I had the passes.  He responded, and I fedex'd the tix to him.  I had no fucking idea who he was at the time.  He thanked me at the hornfans tailgate, and Robert Agnor came over to me (I was manning the grill) and told me who he was.  Nice guy for sure.

He may have been a second-team RB, but he made a pretty important TD run against Notre Dame.

I also think Floyd starts as a freshman. Maybe they start Dele against LSU to do SEC LB things, but Floyd is probably the starter in conference play.

Caleb Johnson could play Rover in our defense, but Oregon is pitching him on playing inside to give y’all an idea of where they view his skill set.

Don’t mess with a good thing. Keep the Shark at B Backer.
