Yep. He looked promising as hell, but you never know. Sam and Shane ahead of him with Roschon coming up behind probably made the odds of ever starting look slimmer than he was comfortable with. Plus he'd likely have to wait two more years.

I will say that those who follow recruiting too closely are likely to get caught up in their roster projections based on high school performance. Rising was assumed to be the next thing, but we do that every class.

What will Casey and Roschon look like in two years? Who else will be in the QB room by then?

I wish he'd stayed, but I'm not going to sweat our 2021 starter at QB just yet.

I was really excited about Rising, and I'll be bummed if he leaves.

That said, I was really excited about Garrett Gilbert and shocked when Colt McCoy got the nod over Jevan Snead, so it might not be so bad if a guy I'm excited about decides to leave.

Were you really?

E.J. Holland's early signing period awards: Best commits, top recruiter, more

The early signing period is officially over. And that means it's time to look at the class and hand out some awards.

Best offensive signee

WR Jake Smith, Notre Dame Prep (AZ) — An electric playmaker, Smith could be an immediate impact player in Austin. The National Gatorade Player of the Year put up insane stats as a senior and will bring a new element to the Texas offense. Smith will see most of his time in the slot, but he can be used all over the field.

Best defensive signee

LB De’Gabriel Floyd, Westlake (Calif.) — What else can be said about the new king of Austin. An absolute animal, Floyd is extremely physical, makes eye-popping hits and moves extremely well for his size. He is a dream linebacker for the Big 12 and will have a chance to start as soon as he steps foot on campus.

Best signing day land

OL Isaiah Hookfin, FB Dulles — There weren’t many fireworks during the early period, but Tom Herman and company did manage to pull of some magic as they earned a signature from Hookfin, who was seen as a lock to Baylor. Hookfin is still a project but has tremendous upside.

Sleeper signee

DL T’Vondre Sweat, Huntsville — Sweat isn’t UT’s highest rated commits, but he looked the part of a four-star recruit as a senior. Sweat added a ton of weight while maintaining his athleticism. Oscar Giles and Yancy McKnight can turn him into a multi-year starter in the trenches.

Most versatile signee

ATH Jordan Whittington, Cuero — Whittington showed just how big of a weapon he can be this week as he set a state title game record for most rushing yards. The four-star prospect is coming to Texas as a wide receiver, but he has the ability to play running back, safety or somewhere else entirely.

Best recruiter

Tim Beck, offensive coordinator — Beck was instrumental in helping Texas land two of its biggest offensive studs in the aforementioned Smith and four-star tight end Brayden Liebrock. He also served as four-star quarterback Roschon Johnson’s primary recruiter and made an impact in several other offensive recruitments.

Best position group

Linebacker — While we didn’t pick him as the top recruiter, you have to give Todd Orlando a ton of credit for the job he did in the early period. Not only did he land Floyd, Orlando also secured commitments from David Gbenda, the best natural inside backer in the state, Caleb Johnson, an immediate impact player, and Marcus Tillman Jr.

Best interview

CB Kenyatta Watson II, Grayson (GA) — Please do yourself a favor and go listen to our No Interviews Please podcast episode with Watson. He is an intelligent, well-spoken kid with a bright future away from football. On the field, Watson is a long, rangy corner that could get on the field early in his career.

Strongest signee

OL Tyler Johnson, Conroe Oak Ridge — Johnson is the heaviest signee and a brutal run blocker. He served up pancake after pancake as a senior and tossed kids like rag dolls. Johnson is a great fit as a right tackle, but he can also slide inside depending on his development.

Fastest signee

S Tyler Owens, Plano East — Owens posted multiple sub-11.00-second 100-meter times in the offseason and tracked at more than 20 miles per hour at UT’s Stars at Night camp in the summer. Owens is a big, fast, intriguing athletes and one of the true freaks in this class.

Immediate Impact

DL Jacoby Jones, Butler C.C. — Jones is expected to come in and not only start but be a difference maker upfront. He has an athletic build that’s best suited for the 4i but his underrated pass rushing skills could allow him to come off the edge.

Biggest X-factor

Bryan Carrington and Derek Chang — Carrington has turned into the face of Texas recruiting and played a pivotal role in several recruitments, highlighted by four-star wide receiver Marcus Washington. Chang plays more of a behind-the-scenes role but is Herman’s right hand man when it comes to recruiting. He is an all-star at keeping the machine running.

Initially, sure.  I didn't follow recruiting closely, but seem to remember Snead being the more coveted recruit. Wasn't Snead a four star and Colt a three?

It didn't take much of watching both to change my mind, but initially, yeah.

IIRC, Colt was a redshirt freshman and Snead was a true freshman. That's why I didn't find it surprising. However, Snead was definitely the more coveted recruit.

2019- Sam, Shane, Casey, Rojo(RS)

2020- Sam, Casey, Rojo, Card(RS), Shane Grand transfer?

2021- three way battle at QB between casey, Rojo and Card (hopefully with Preston Stone RS as well)

dont blame rising for wanting out instead of just hoping for the best in 2021. Really thought he could beat out Shane for QB2 this year

Holy shit, I remember Snead throwing a lot of ints, but never would have guessed he finished his college career 48/35 td/int.  That seems bad.

Again, don't assume Casey will stick around.

I think we will soon see a high % of starting QB’s in D1 being transfers. I think kids will continue to be recruited and sign as they always have, then once they have a better understanding of the landscape they will xfer to a school where the QB room is more favorable. Which, I understand, means someone most likely transferred out of that destination school. It will get interesting.

So was Brantley

My impression at the time was that MOST of the Longhorn fan base wanted the Snead mafia ordained based mostly on his NFL metrics and rankings. The staff went with the better throwing and quicker thinking QB, Colt McCoy. Either would have been a good choice but the right decision was made.

And he left school early to go into the NFL draft, only to go undrafted.

his RS soph year at ole miss was pretty good.  probably would have been an early to mid-round pick had left after that season.  he had a fair amount of hype going into junior year.

Fuck.  I guess this is what you get when you are fortunate enough to get elite level QBs to sign.  Everyone wants to start for 3-4 years.  If you have more than one high level guy, one of them is looking to see what else is out there.  Hope Roshon is the real deal.  RS next year, back up for 1 year, compete to start for 3.  Would have loved to see what the offense could do with Cam at the wheel, but Sam, Roshon seem like better fits for our offense.

Demas is this cycle’s Leal. He’s gone.

Demas showed up to almost every home game. I think we flip him.  I also think we will get Zack Evans.  We will take a grad transfer and hopefully RS Brown.  Ingram and the GT play all next year and Evans will hop right in in 2020 with Ingram and Brown.  Sam will be a SR and the running game will be devastating.

He had some serious girlfriend difficulties (Jimboish) that caused issues with him remaining on the team (no pics that I know of).

We needed him to win the game for us @ KSU when Colt went down on the QB sneak, but he played like ass.

Snead wasn’t older, he was a year after colt.

Thanks, I had  it flipped.  I do remember now Colt was on the sideline for VY's last year.  His first or 2nd game was against tOSU and an early fumble at the goal line by JC loomed large.  He actually played really well that game all things considered.  He got his revenge vs jorts a few years later.

You are counting your chickens already, for no good reason.

I think I’m going to have to see a fuckton more before I will feel like he’s any kind of answer at QB. I’m not a coach and such,  but I’m a bit mystified about them taking him as early as they did with what we’ve seen so far.

Worst case scenario is that he's an electric slot WR. But yeah, I want another QB.

I doubt Card is their primary QB take.  With LT QBs turning out to be NFL players, no harm in taking Card as a QB2 now and letting him try out WR if QB doesn't work out.  I'd put money on them taking 2 QBs in 2020 with Rising and Thompson looking around.

I can only hope that longhorn94 has neither doxing nor ninja skills.

I guess the new standard is that if you're not starting by the end of your freshman year you should transfer.

Depends on what their pitch is--if it's you can come in with a chance to start or start (BU) then they may feel slighted when it doesn't occur.  Rising was who I wanted to stick but oh well.

The Rising transfer stings but at least we have coaches with proven track records of successfully developing QBs for this offense, and so far, the staff has been good at evaluating talent so I feel more confident we will be OK without Rising.

Damn, I forgot that was the same year as the gift that keeps on giving Ryan(?) Periloser. Not many recruits stick out in my head as much as him for being a complete POS extremely highly regarded recruit and ultimately a 100% belly flop bust.

Gambling is illegal at Bushwood  in Texas and I never always slice.

In all seriousness, paying 'croots with casino chips is the most innovative idea I've seen in quite some time.

If Freeze was breaking off Tunica casino chips instead of call girls, he'd probably still be at Ole Miss.

I look forward to visiting the Kirby Smart-Cherokee Nation Casino in Georgia.
