With the program still riding its Sugar high, the buzz received an extra jolt with junior safety Brandon Jones announcing he’ll forgo the NFL Draft to play his final season in Austin.

Jones’ emotions on whether or not to leave began fluctuating after his performance vs USC.

At more than one point over the course of the season, Jones was gone. Then he re-injured his high ankle sprain and his thoughts changed. While fully healthy in the win over Georgia, Jones flirted with the idea of the NFL. But at the end of the day, with an insurance policy from his mother, the Nacogdoches native decided to finish what he started three years prior; get a degree, win a Big 12 title, and make it to the pros. He knows he's close to accomplishing all three over the next 12 months.

As for the remaining four Longhorns in the NCAA Portal, we’ve only heard Cam Rising is more open to staying after a long talk with Tim Beck post-Sugar Bowl.

Make no mistake, Rising will field plenty of attention this off-season. It remains to be seen who offers and pushes the most, but UT might have to re-recruit the talented young quarterback.

One current player that is drawing attention isn’t even in the Portal. Junior Shane Buechele is a hot bet in Las Vegas to leave Austin. And he still could - we’ve heard as many as 10 schools interested, with a couple of coaches even contacting us to find out what we've heard - but this comes down to a lot more than football.

Buechele loves life in Austin, his brotherhood with teammates, a long-time girlfriend, and his work towards a degree from the University. He also sees himself as a future coach. The remaining question is Buechele content on backing up Sam Ehlinger for one more season or two.

As of today, Buechele prefers his home remain in Austin, but his competitive nature could come out with the right situation.

Early enrollees will arrive in town next week. That list includes: QB Roschon Johnson, RB Jordan Whittington, LB De'Gabriel Floyd, TE Jared Wiley, DE Peter Mpagi, LB Marcus Tillman, LB/DE Jacoby Jones, OL Tyler Johnson, and LB Caleb Johnson.

You'll notice the 'RB' designation for Whittington. He'll still be a slot receiver at times but we expect him to get fully acclimated at running back as well. The staff likes the flexibility he gives the class and wouldn't mind keeping the depth chart as attractive as possible for 2020 prospects. To be sure, they do like Deondrick Glass and Darwin Barlow, they're just happy with Derrian Brown and Whittington. Barlow was seen as being redundant to Brown.

These players will all be in for a rude awakening when workouts begin the week after next. They're not used to the intensity of the workouts they'll receive from Yancy McKnight. Specifically, the focus on legs and seemingly never-ending agility drills will be something they'll have to adapt to. Last year's early enrollees exceeded staff expectations by every measure. Let's see if this group can do the same.

STATE OF RECRUITING

2019

The dead period officially comes to an end at midnight on Thursday with the staff still needing to tie up a few loose ends.

North Forest’s Javonne Shepherd is one to watch, with an A&M official visit scheduled this weekend. After that, he could be back on campus in Austin later next week but both Alabama and Georgia are angling to get official visits. Shepherd has yet to take his official visit to Texas.

So how is this one going to play out? It's hard to say because we have heard conflicting things. We know the A&M side feels pretty confident, but we don't think those close to Shepherd are pushing A&M all that hard.

One thing stands out to us: We were told way back in the spring that whoever gets the last visit will likely end up signing Shepherd. That likely won't be A&M. We also don't feel like he'll go out-of-state.

UT is probably the slight favorite to hold on but that could change in an instant.

Jalen Catalon is another target taking an official visit to a rival this weekend as the Mansfield Legacy nickel will visit nearby TCU. The perceived Arkansas lean has long held TCU in good standing. We've heard Texas is making this one more interesting than it was previously and funny enough we're hearing that from the Arkansas side.

Expect Craig Naivar to go see Catalon on Friday as well as next week to make one final push. TCU will undoubtedly try to negative sell UT's depth chart to Catalon and Naivar will want to get in front of that. Also expect Texas to try and get Catalon on campus for one final unofficial visit before he makes his decision in the next week or two. If that happens, watch out.

Texas is also trying to receive visits from St. Louis offensive lineman Ira Henry, Indianapolis offensive lineman Dawand Jones, and JUCO linebacker Lakia Henry. Henry is supposed to visit on the 19th, while the staff is still working to get the two high school offensive lineman to commit to a visit.

Before the summer, we wouldn't be surprised by a grad transfer (OT) or two (DB Jordan Moore is still an option) or even three (RB) finding their way to Austin. In the meantime the infamous portal is being monitored constantly, just ask Tathan.

2020 and 2021

As we've written a handful of times, with the end of the dead period the staff will get more aggressive with the classes ahead. Those classes just so happen to be pretty damn loaded and will be a blast to cover.

While no activity is expected on the 40 Acres this weekend with official visitors, there will be some targeted juniors like Bastrop’s Alfred Collins, Manor’s Princely Umanmielen, and Katy Tompkins sophomore Tunmise Adeleye taking visits. All three are defensive linemen with Collins and Adeleye looking elite.

The following weekend gets even better with five-star running back Zachary Evans, four-star safety Bryson Washington, and three-star athlete Michael Henderson. Washington and Evans are pretty good friends. Washington doesn't get talked about enough and could realistically be included in class mock-ups. We'll see how numbers go.

We expect more names to be added to both weekends and will add those as they come.

Good news, the staff clearly realizes A&M and OU got the jump on them last year and are now trying to return the favor. They're being aggressive and taking advantage of the win over Georgia. That aggression was part of the calculus for predictions of a top-five 2020 class.

Coaches on the move:

As mentioned above, Naivar will be in Mansfield to see Catalon. When Naivar locks on a guy he's not going down without a fight. While in the area, he'll swing through Duncanville to see Chris Thompson and Ja'Quinden Jackson. Interestingly, Tim Beck will be in tow. We don't see Jackson as a quarterback, but what the hell, just recruit him with that being a possibility and go from there.

Beck looks to channel his volume recruiter ability and will also see Highland Park defensive end Prince Dorbah. UT is in a good spot here but you have to watch out for OU too. It'll be interesting to see how well new OU defensive coordinator Alex Grinch can recruit. We've talked to some coaches who know him and they think he'll be formidable with the OU brand on his shirt.

Receivers coach Drew Mehringer will be by Tomball High School to visit Demond Demas in his new school. Demas transferred at the semester from North Forest. That's a quality of life upgrade for the five-star committed to A&M.

Not to be outdone by his colleague in the secondary, Jason Washington will make the trip out to Arizona to see five-star cornerback Kelee Ringo. Texas will be in that recruitment until the end. For now, the staff will keep chopping wood, or more fittingly, whatever the hell saguaros are made of.

I may have been talked off the ledge a bit. His cut and go is a thing of beauty. His catching out of the backfield will be like Watson. His cut and go is reminiscent of Jamaal (not speed or overall production). It's just what he's elite at. How that translates to college he'll immediately be the first college player named to the pro bowl with 3 years left at Texas.

His film looks like tre Watson out of HS, similar running style, similar type cuts and stride.   Nothing like jamaal really with his upright, gazelle (or something) like double legged cuts.

I don't understand about Barlow being redundant to Brown.

Obviously, they like what Brown brings and I assume it's different from what KI and DY bring.

But if you like it so much why not make sure you have a backup for it if Brown gets hurt or isn't ready.

Right now you have 2rbs on campus and a aspiring YouTuber.  You need bodies and especially capable ones.

Now if they say Whittington is superior to Barlow as a RB then I can understand that.  I don't necessarily agree but whatever.

I don't like this strategy much.

*im sure they're going to check on GTs

I am very intrigued as to what happens with Overshown next year. If Jones leaves, the logical conclusion is that he would play the Joker role that BJ Foster played this year. If Jones comes back, it's hard to see where he fits in the secondary other than as a backup to Jones, Sterns and Foster. Obviously many have speculated that he would slide down to Rover and compete with Caleb Johnson. I hope he is able to do so as that is the more pressing area of need, but I think both ideally need to gain 10-15 pounds. In any event, I really hope he doesn't transfer as was speculated at one point, because he is supremely talented.

here is a thread from Ian Boyd - he thinks that Jones should move to Mac. thread is interesting...

final tweet is:

Quote

For 2019 with so many big & versatile DBs on the roster, I think the answer for Texas is just to play all of them. Since he has familiarity with playing down & is auditioning for the NFL, I think Jones should slide inside to the Mac. No more combover, this is the "hair plug D"

Jake Smith seems to be the one of the class favorites.  He looks like a damn good football player to me, but I'm not seeing the elite speed I keep reading about (ducks).  He's got good speed and quickness and runs exceptional routes, but he doesn't have Marquise Goodwin or Hollywood Brown speed.  I think he ends being a really good football player, but I'm not sure he makes as an immediate impact or lives up to some of the expectations I read here.  Malik Jefferson rings a bell in this regard. This happens every year, I'm sure with every fan base.

One guy ran the 4th fastest 40 time ever at the NFL combine (4.27)

the other guy ran a 4.33

those 40 speeds are in the 99th percentile of football players in the world

Smith's is reported to be a 4.4 40 guy (but who knows, can't find any timed)

next thing we know you are going to complain he isn't as fast as Rondale Moore (4.33 40 @ The Opening)

come on.

Boyd's been inspired by the Chargers defense against Baltimore. He made a pretty interesting case, given how well Jones, Foster, and theoretically Overshown are around the ball.

Not mentioned much is the Chargers are destroyed by injuries at linebacker, and played seven DBs mostly out of necessity, rather than put JAGs off the street into the game at linebacker

lulz, sharing the info wasn't the point, it was the stupid insistence on crediting TFloss when he's just pasting other people's information on some other message board.

Well SpiderY2Banana did say yesterday that Zach Evans is to Texas as Bru McCoy is to USC, so at least for him the topics that expose his dumbassery are certainly not limited to Derrian Brown.

Eh, he’s on ignore, so it’s the rest of you I was referring to here. I got tired of seeing that dude blast threads with inanity grenades to the tune of 5-10 posts per page when he makes an appearance.

So you're saying we should stop the comparisons between Derrian Brown and Vai Sikahema?

Finally got around to watching Derrian Brown's highlights, after you jagoffs spent the last 12 hours fellating him.  I've gotta say.  I was really blown away by how good he looked.

Trying to come up with an exact comparison is hard, but my thought is that his film is like if Jim Brown, Jim Thorpe, Ricky Williams, Zach Evans, Adrian Peterson, and Emmitt Smith all jizzed into a cauldron, which was stirred up.  Then an Asgardian Æsir exhaled gently over the concoction, before injecting it into Cronus's head, which was then severed.  And that head was buried under an obelisk in Heliopolis.  After emerging, reborn, from the dead, he wandered the planet until he learned the mystery of astral projection from perusing ancient religious texts scrawled upon palm leaves.  Enlightened, he ventured from the east to the west, traveling through Europe before arriving in Spain, where he decided to don a mask and fight corruption, wielding a sword.

He calls his masked, nirvanic persona The Zorro Astralan.

It's impressive you post as much as you do yet still believe that's anywhere near the highest level of dumbfuckery this board is capable of achieving.

You're like the 5th person I've already impressed today. Normally, it takes until, like, lunchtime before that happens.
