The Three Best Movies You've Never Seen, or Seen and Didn't Like

So I just saw Goodfellas for the first time this weekend.  Yes, the first time.  It was ok.   I think Casino is better.  Ray Liotta was kind of a bitch if you think about it.  He wanted all the perks of being a gangster without any of the sacrifice.  Then when the shit hits the fan he just rats out all his buddies.  Granted they were going to off him, but still.

Yeah he was so great on snl they had to do two best of Chris Farley collections when everyone else only had 1 at the time. I still do the “what?” from that coffee commercial skit in my head all the time when someone says something stupid on a conference call.

This one kills me

Let's just say it was the complete opposite of watching the debut of Alien while dropping acid for the first time. Pretty high on my list of bad ideas.

Hole-eee fuck !!! That would not be a good idea.  Alien scarred the fuck out of me in HS when we saw it on the big screen.   Watching AN on acid or shrooms are definitely right answers.

Never watched one of the Godfather series.  I have never finished 2001 Space Odyssey.  It's weird because I love exploitation films and B movies, but I fall asleep during these without fail.

Are you Amish? Congrats on getting the internet!

2001.  Man, I'll admit to losing a bit of interest after Dave gets away, but up to that point, damn, the slowness is the point.

Watching this flick is like going to an art exhibit where you are seeing pits and pieces of it as individual paintings or exhibits.

The little things, like Frank admitting defeat at chess, or Dr. Floyd chowing down on his space sandwich.  It's like every stupid step or gesture in that flick is fraught with meaning.

I'm beginning to think that if you are younger than a certain age, you aren't going to be as impressed (or grateful for) 2001 just because it broke so many barriers and set up so many tropes in terms of the way people look at space movies.

And it was so fucking cool.

It was based on a true story and that seems like an accurate portrayal of the guy Liotta was playing.   You forgot to mention his final bitch move.  Rats everybody out, goes into witness protection and bitches about the life they set him up in.  How that guy lived to be an old man is a mystery.

I’m the worst at not seeing “good” movies, have way more than 3 but here goes:

Pulp Fiction (never been a big Travolta fan)
Godfather II
Any John Wayne movie.

As far as movies that just didn’t do it for me:

The Shining
ET
Scarface

I've never sat through all the of Godfather, but shit have probably pieced that damn film together over the years. Love it, but can't seem to sit through it.

My unpopular opinion: The Big Lebowski. Saw it in high school with some stoner friends who swore it was gospel. Shit annoyed me, I'd like to see it again though to see if that's changed.

Moonlight would be the only thing on that list that I would suggest you take the time to watch. It's not particularly long, won best picture, and is easily one of the best films I've seen of the past 10 years.

It's gay but not explicitly so. There's only one scene that is sexual and it's fairly innocent. (if you need a disclosure before watching)

The Big Lebowski certainly has its quotable moments but as a complete movie I  always found it just okay.

I didn't like it the first time I watched it.  The Dude was annoying as shit to me. It's a national treasure as far as I'm concerned now, and the Duderino is one of my all time favorite characters.

If you're a movie buff (or you're a Clark Gable Fan) you have to see the first 2.

A Clockwork Orange is just good clean fun though.. eggywakes for everyone....

I have seen Fargo.  I am not a fan.  Just didn't enjoy it.

English Patient is boring as all get out.

Never saw Avatar, never will.

Oh, and Titanic sucks shit through a straw.  The boat sinking was cool once, but the acting is cringeworthy.  Best part of that movie is Billy Zane.  Cause it is Billy Zane.

If I never saw a movie I couldn't know if it was good or not. I could only know if it is widely considered a good movie.

Things that are widely considered to be good or great are not necessarily so, they just appeal to a plurality of shitheads.

2001: A Space Odyssey is easily mine. I really wanted to like it, was kind of excited about it when I sat down to watch it, and grew increasingly bored and disappointed as the movie drug on. I can appreciate certain elements, but it felt like a chore to watch. I powered through but won't ever watch it again. Maybe it was better if you saw it when it was somewhat new.

I've never seen Schindler's List and never care to. I'm sure it's extremely well done but I watch movies for entertainment.

I've also never seen a lot of the older classics - Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, or The Bridge over River Kwai.

I must have missed him, but who did Clark Gable play in Citizen Kane?  Or did you only mean to refer to GWTW?

For me, the answer is Shawshank Redemption.  I've tried, but it just doesn't hold my interest.

GWTW of course, but yeah that could have been a bit clearer.  You should see them for different reasons for sure.  Cinematography for Citizen Kane, and Clark Gable for GWTW.  He's great in that role, and hopefully had a blast playing it.  The story is a sweeping epic so that's a reason to watch as well, but I get why lots pf people don't like it.

I think I still have bruises on my arm from my then-girlfriend smacking me repeatedly from sheer terror and fear when we saw Aliens in the theater.  She had no idea she was doing it at the time.  (Or maybe she did and just claimed she didn't realize it in order to get a free pass at whaling away on my right arm.)

This post got me thinking...

Is this...or what is the biggest/longest necro-bump in site history?

Since I'm just seeing this thread, lets get it going again..

Anything black and white or old classics other than Wizard of Oz, Freaks, or It's a Wonderful Life.

I've never seen Jurassic Park or 2001

Looking at AFI's top 100, I've never seen Casablanca. Citizen Kane, Gone with the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia, On the Waterfront, Singin' in the Rain, Bridge on the River Kwai, Some Like it Hot, All About Eve, African Queen, etc. I guess my interest in movies starts with films made post-1965. I do watch It's a Wonderful Life every Christmas though.

I have watched Chinatown twice and I think it's incredibly boring.

I've seen Casablanca many times.  Pretty much as close to a perfect movie as you can get.

I've never seen: Schindler's List, Citizen Kane, or The Shawshank Redemption.

I’m a huge Casablanca fan too. On the Shawshank Redemption, I’ve seen it, but it didn’t do much for me.  Didn’t hate it, but it was nothing special.  Probably an unpopular opinion.

If you don’t love It’s a Wonderful Life you’ve got a hole in your soul. It is the greatest film ever made. Look at you life and certain decisions you made and how would it be different.

I don’t like musicals, as my parents were of that pre rock n roll generation that loved them. Fucking Camelot. I’ve not seen Singin in the Rain. West side story. Paint your wagon. Most other musicals beyond Disney.

Correct. I listen to a lot of mob podcasts. At the end of the day, the cooperators rat because they don’t want to do jail time. The American prison system is very convincing.

The LOTR movies: Saw them and was bored as shit.

Pirates of the Carribean: Saw a few. See above.

Recents:

Poor Things: Couldn't finish even though Emma Stone is an elite actress who looks nice with no clothes on.

Couldn't bring myself to watch the Elton John and Freddie Mercury biopics.

Did you read the title of the thread? Every response should be a head-scratcher.

I was really bored with Chariots of Fire and Im a sucker for that genre

Attempted to watch Uncut Gems. It was unwatchable to me. I also couldnt get thru Breaking Bad either which seemed to have excruciating scenes after another.

But Uncut Gems was made to be purposefully disrupting given the music, shaky cam, unlikable characters, and very bad addict decisions.
