AVP/FIVB Beach Volleyball, anyone?

It's not what it used to be, what with all the rule changes, some good, most bad imho, and there's not a lot of star power right now, which is also good and bad ... But it's still fun. Here's at least one good reason to watch. Alexa Strange. Bad to the bone...

Saw Alexa play for USC at TCU couple years ago, you’re about 10’ from the players there.

Can’t believe they play at Krieg.

Yeah, Alexa's a different kinda chick, but I admire her don'tgiveafuck attitude . She sure is easy on the eyes, too, and a helluva player. They play at Krieg iirc because of a scheduling conflict for Auditorium Shores, where they used to play. I was skeptical, but Krieg has actually worked really well. Thursday and Friday are actually the best days imho, with the men's and women's qualifiers running well into the night on Thursday. There were something like 100+ qualy teams last year. It was nuts.

As someone who lives in SoCal right now  AVP is here in Huntington Beach, and Hermosa this summer  we never miss it.  My little girl loves Volleyball

Yeah the AVP will be here in a couple of weeks.Looking forward to it. But we're especially looking forward to returning to Hermosa in July. Used to go just about every year, but that stopped when the kids arrived. There was a really big group of us from Austin. We were such regulars that a lot of the tour folks knew us on sight. Heading back this year & taking the boys along. They're 12 & 15, & really starting to get into volleyball now, thanks to my old coach Glen Lietzke and the ASC/AJV guys. Gonna make the tournament the finale of about a week long Cali trip. Booked the Sea Sprite right on the Strand. Can't wait to grab some slices at Paisano's. Too bad the Ragin' Cajun had to move though.

Dude that’s awesome. For all the stuff that makes Cali suck there’s a lot of good here too. One is living 3 miles from hermosa hahaha. My little girl loves volleyball so I keep her exposed as much as I can. Last year she had her volleyball signed by 2 pros there one was a local girl  I don’t follow it too much but enjoy it when it’s on. We are heading to Huntington Beach this weekend  plus they are doing a hyper car show there too. Keongiseggs paganis etc

Sat in the upper deck of the Rangers’ game today, which leads to my only AVP story. Handful of years ago they played an event in the parking lots of the Ballpark in Arlington. Saw May/Walsh beat Branagh/Youngs in the final, then went to the Ranger game next door. Had bought two AVP souvenirs & carried them all the way to the upper deck. Walked all the fucking way down after the game only to realize my souvenirs were still up there. Hiked it way the fuck back up, bag was gone.

Still pissed.

Two pretty amazing men's elimination matches to end Saturday on stadium court in Huntington.

#1 Crabb/Gibb went to the freeze up 14-13 & had to take it to 17-15 to beat #2 Phil & Nick 21-13, 15-21, 17-15

...and Tim Bomgren & Troy Field took a 14-8 lead into the freeze against Casebeer/Schalk, but had to go to 20-18 to win it 21-15, 19-21, 20-18, after an amazing comeback & serving run by Jeremy Casebeer.

Winners to the semis:

Bourne/Trevor Crabb vs Taylor Crabb/ Gibb at 1:15

Bomgren/Field vs Budinger/Patterson at 12:15

Man, I miss sideout scoring. Those points in the freeze on both matches really illustrated how much different the game is in sideout. The freeze always does, imho. It just changes everything. Sideout makes for a much more exciting, intense game, imho, but the TV guys like predictable game lengths. Fucking tv is just ruining practically every sport. If we can't have sideout scoring, the freeze is a good compromise, or at least better than nothing. Very smart move by the AVP imho. Wish the FIVB would follow suit in international play. Watching a match end on a missed serve is just craptacular.

#1 Klineman/Ross win the ladies’ side of Huntington on at least their 6th MP. They high-five/hug/high-five after every single point, that’s a little excessive.

The runner-up Canadians have a freaking giant that played indoor for Nebraska.

Yeah, I mean I know chicks gonna be chicks, but damn, they get carried away with all the hugging & girly shit after every.single.point.

Of course, but it doesn't look like that very often. I like watching Alexa Strange & hot girls like her do just about anything, but there aren't many Alexa types out there at the highest levels.

BTW, how 'bout Troy Field? This guy is a real phenom. 25 yo who's only been playing since he was 19 or so. Makes it to his first Sunday match against a very fresh Budinger & Patterson & plays pretty well despite the long road to get there. He & Tim Bomgren are an incredibly athletic team and are only getting better every tournament. Looking for big things from both in the future. What Field does as a blocker at 'only' 6' 4" is phenomenal. 6'4" used to be considered 'big guy' material on the old AVP before the crazy rule changes, but not any longer. And the guy's athleticism is just off the charts.

AVP Qualy starts tomorrow. Anyone going? Something like 80 teams each on the men's and women's sides, trying to play into the main draw. Unreal. Last year they played until like 11:30 at night...

Both #1 seeds lost their first match.

Yep, and both to the 16 seeds.

ETA: and Mark Burik & Ian Satterfield (who played great all weekend) really got the short end of that. They came through the qualifier yesterday and had to play Rosie & Ricardo first thing in the a.m. Then for their loser's bracket match they got the #1 seeds Crabb & Gibb coming off their loss. Just brutal.

I saw plenty of long rallies since neither team could finish a point. Wasn’t a strong women’s field to begin with thanks to the Brazil tourney. #4 v. #14 won’t happen often in a stacked bracket.

Yeah, in that match. I meant on Sunday in general.

Pretty big news on the college front, USC’s coach is stepping down. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Dain Blanton get the gig.

Saw Dain in Austin. Hadn't seen him in a while. Good guy. Hope he gets it if that's what he wants...

Well, this ain’t cool.

A man who died after jumping from the window of his Atlantic City hotel room has been identified as a professional volleyball player.

Officers from the Atlantic City Police Department responded just after 5:30 p.m. local time to a report of a man found dead in the parking lot of the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa, Sergeant Kevin Fair told PEOPLE.

Detectives investigating the scene found that the man had jumped from the window of his hotel room, which was located on the 29th floor, according to News 12 New Jersey.

Police would not identify the man, but noted he was a 25-year-old from Cherry Hill, New Jersey.

Several volleyball organizations, meanwhile, simultaneously announced the death of Eric Zaun, a 25-year-old Cherry Hill native.

The AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Tour, for whom Zaun made his debut in 2017, paid tribute to the athlete on Instagram.

“The AVP is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Eric Zaun. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends at this time. He will be deeply missed,” the post read.

Zaun won AVP’s rookie of the year prize in 2017 after graduating from Limestone College in South Carolina, where he was an outside hitter on the men’s indoor team, according to his AVP profile.

He lived briefly in Florida after college before moving to Southern California to pursue his dreams of playing professionally.

“I love the culture and the lifestyle associated with beach volleyball,” he told Volleyballmag.com in 2017. “It’s great to be able to travel around the country to different beaches and locations doing what you love.”

Zaun’s final Instagram post, shared just over a week before his death, showed him playing volleyball with fellow athlete Avery Drost.

“June is gonna be a good month,” he captioned the post.

The Sand Wannabes, a forum for volleyball players, shared a tribute to Zaun on Facebook, remembering a time he dropped by Aussie’s Grill & Beach Bar in Austin.

“A few Sand Wannabes to many got to know Eric on different levels at different times from his NVL days to current AVP days, and those interactions from watching him play with so much intensity to casual convos were always memorable,” the post read. “It’s a sad day.”

The Borgata did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
