How was he doing vs OU before the thumb injury? I’m glad we got Ewers. Mike Leach was once asked how to make your QB better and he said recruit a better QB. Of course the WR would want Ewers here. We should be recruiting over starters at every position. But this bullshit smearing of CT after his efforts here is ridiculous

Bijan was running it 35 times vs TCU, because Sark was afraid to let Casey throw the ball.

Casey's thumb fell off and they had to attach his big toe as a replacement.  Normally that's a seamless transition, but the doctors used the big toe on his left foot, so naturally that takes a little getting used to.  2022 was always the timeline for him.

This.. Casey was 4-6 as a starter. 2 of those wins Sark was deathly afraid to throw the ball. In his 4 wins Texas averaged 311 yards rushing and 195 passing. Texas ran it 47.5 time and threw 21.5. The key to winning was not relying on Casey and the passing game

How can you associate Casey with our W/L record when OU scored 55 points, Kansas 57, and there were a few other games where we win if WRs just catch balls thrown right to them or the defense just makes one stop?  He threw for 388 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INTs against OU, which goes against your "the key to winning was not relying on Casey and the passing game" argument.  What else was he supposed to do in that game...play defense?  How can he be blamed for the Kansas loss when Hudson somehow managed a 21 to 28 point swing in a matter of minutes?  We threw more than we ran the ball both games and still lost, mainly because our D couldn't stop anything.  Flip those results and his record is 6-4, mostly with a bad hand that could barely hold onto the ball, and no one can say Hudson or any other QB would have done any better.

it is just a fact. Texas may have won Kansas if Card didnt play. They may have won WV if Casey didnt play. If you want 6-4, take it. It is not like that is a good result either. Casey was 7th in QBR in the Big 12 and that was with a bad collection of QBs in this year. He is threw more Ints per attempt than any other QB in the league, that had nothing to do with his thumb. QB play was a major reason Texas had a losing record. There is a reason why the players and coaches went looking for a QB in the portal.

Why are we still talking about him at all? He’s not a Longhorn anymore. Thanks for your service and good luck in the corn fields. Enough talk about him.

JFC this.  He's gone.  Get over it.  Who cares.  Just wish him luck wherever life takes him and let this fucking thread die so we can get on with arguing about the important stuff like who was the worse coach Strong or Herman, whether or not a BLT can have avocado on it, and what kind of dumbfuck puts cheese on his apple pie.

How was he doing vs OU before he hurt his thumb?

I mean if you're not going to stop asking then someone has to answer. He was doing adequately. Plays against OU before he was maimed in a gruesome accident:

Completion to receiver 5 yards behind line of scrimmage with no defender within 7 yards. Worthy turns it into 75 yard touchdown.
Misses wide open Jared Wiley in end zone with no OU defender within 8 yards of him.
3 yard scramble on broken play action rollout.
Hits wide open Brewer on crossing route 1 yard beyond LOS. Wide open passing lane and throw is on Brewer's back hip.
3rd and 5 is pressured while making first read to Worthy, scrambles for a one yard gain. Had Worthy 1-on-1 after being flushed but didn't try a throw, play failure not on Thompson though.
After interception moves around pocket and hits Worthy 17 yards downfield. Good play but the throw was a wobbling duck Worthy had to stop accelerating for or he would have gained more. This is a good example of a competent play that a great throw would have made better but fans see 25 yard completion in the box score. Still Thompson's best play so far.
Touchdown throw to Moore. Good throw, good timing, good play by Thompson. New best play so far.
Pop pass to Moore for 9 yards.
Pressured, misses Whittington on short pass, not his fault.
48 yards TD to Moore. Play action after two successful runs had Moore 8 yards behind the defense. This is a great play, but it was not a great throw in large part because it didn't need to be (just like the Colorado one to Dixon).
Sacked for 3 yard loss, and there was a clear lane to get away. Hard to blame a QB with our OL for sacks but this one was on Thompson. Open lane and Roschon Johnson in the flat to bail him out for a minimal gain if he wanted.
Pressured and throws incomplete to Robinson, not on Thompson.

That's the play where he hurt his thumb. So above we have a QB who, being generous, made one plus throw, one plus plus throw, one negative play, one awful throw, and three baseline competent plays two of which were long touchdowns (one thanks to YAC and one thanks to a blown coverage).

It was not nearly as awe-inspiring of a performance as his fanboys on this forum think it was, pretty much just like the Colorado game. He is a competent FBS quarterback and that's about it.

1st half stats:

10 of 16, 244 yards, 4 TD, -16 rushing.

That's a good half of football, helped out by some defensive lapses and 99 rushing yards by Bijan on 10 carries, but it's a flimsy peg to hang your hat on.

Coaches are always looking for the best QBs possible, unless their current QB room is a sure thing.  Our QBs were obviously anything but a sure thing, so it's not shocking that they went after a potential Heisman QB who already had committed to Texas previously, after he portaled.  And the players didn't go looking for a QB...it was mainly X begging for Ewers to come after the staff already targeted him for the second time.  I didn't say Casey was an all-world QB...only that he was better than the other options and he played half the season in pain.  Also that there are other reasons for our record outside of QB play...namely giving up 50 points and not catching the ball in key moments.  48 and 55 points should be enough to win a football game.  Unless you're us.

When I was a resident our hand guy had people come from all over for reconstructive work. Had a guy come in to clinic who several months earlier had had a great toe to thumb transfer. He said he wanted it removed. Attending asked him if it was painful or if it wasn’t working right. Guy said no it  works ok but it looks like a dick /csb

If his dick looks like a big toe being used as a thumb maybe he should have considered cutting his dick off

Fun fact: His 7 TDs against Kansas are a UT record for total TDs in a single game. He’s tied with Clyde Littlefield who somehow had 4 passing TDs & 3 receiving TDs against a school called Daniel Baker. In 1915. Would love to see that record broken soon, Sark make it be.

Did they shave down the toe so it could fit in his nose?

Also if it is considered cheating if you use your left hand versus your right, where does a toe fit in.  Asking for a friend.

I sure hope so. I don't want there to be any records broken from a game that was also a loss to Kansas

If not, Nebraska media relations should start preparing to address a “Nebraska picks starters based on race” rumor.

Defense was the reason we were 5-7.  We had one of the worst defenses in the nation but were about 30th in ppg.

QB play was not good, but it was adequate for say 8-4 or 9-3.

Casey's QB rating was 27th, just ahead of Sam Howell of UNC, who will be going pro.  Casey isn't as good as Howell, but he was adequate.

I used QBR which now has him at 62 and seems much more accurate.

This rating has him 27th.  I was rather surprised Stetson Bennett was #4.  Caleb Williams #5.  Bryce Young was #7.

That is the normal efficiency rating. QBR does things like adjust for quality of defense. QBR will give a lot less credit to screen pass that goes 80 yards compared to efficiency rating. Neither are perfect, but I prefer QBR.

How on God's green earth is this not a record Vince holds?

Vince never had that many passing TDs in a game. His career high was 4. Most of our TDs in the Vince years were scored by Running Backs.

Mack calling off the dogs in blowouts + Vince also having good RBs to hand off to. He could’ve broken it if he ever had to.

Because when we played teams like Kansas, VY would account for 5 quick TDs and let that idiot Nordgren mop up. We didn’t ever need VY to win a duel with a bad team.

Yeah, because we actually had a defense back then.

Edit: although I didn't remember this game:

Vince went 22/40 with 1 TD and 2 INTs.  What a bum, we should've benched him.

2004 KU game says hi. Vince scrambled on 4th & 18 to get a first down on the game winning drive. Unreal how many times he bailed out GD & Mack.

Kansas wasn’t Kansas then you idiot. They had Mangino Bear.

They finished 4-7 that year. Mangino Bear didn’t get them rolling till a couple seasons later.
