Seems the bowling crew listened to @APMP.  Other than Duckett the Dwarf, India's bowling attack made minced meat out of the rest of England's lineup.

I figured England would have the lead by lunch on Day 3, but the bowlers left India with a 126 run lead going into the third innings.  What a turnaround.

The scorecard shows Jaiswal retired hurt, Ashwin left the team due to a family emergency... will India have enough warm bodies to finish up this test?
That's the big question, especially because 4th innings Ashwin was likely going to be the lead bowler. I'm expecting an earlier than usual (before tea) declaration from India so that the weakened bowling crew has enough time to get 10 wickets.

Or India could screw it up again and be all out before lunch... who knows.

I think India bat and bat and bat as long as they can to make England's fielders stand out there in the field and wear themselves out.  Also, I'm not sure Bazball has ever batted a full day.

Jadeja's bowling will be the key.  Hopefully he won't give up a ton of needless no balls as he often does.  It's borderline criminal how many times he oversteps.

Going through the espn commentary, it seems Jaiswal capped it off in the 85th over.  Three sixes in a row off grumpy old fart Jimmy Anderson... treated the pensioner like a donkey.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Now let's turn out a rank bunsen burner pitch for the next match and seal the series.

Was that a product of the pitch? England looked truly lost batting in that second innings.
The pitch was not ideal for batting, but it wouldn't explain the extent of England's collapse. I think a lot of it also had to do with India's spin dominance and England's lack of experience playing in such conditions. It got away from England at the end of Day 2 when they couldn't make their dominant position count.

In non-India news, Australia defeated New Zealand for about the billionth time in a row in a really good test match.  NZ were cruising along in their second innings but went from 286/5 to 372 all out.  That gave them a 279 run lead facing a shaky Australia batting with a full session left on day three.  Things couldn't go much better for the Kiwis as they took four wickets for just 34 runs and finished day 3 with a 200 run lead.

Things started good enough for NZ on day four, taking Travis Head's wicket while still maintaining a 190 run lead.  The ball before that, they dropped a fairly easy catch of Mitch Marsh.  In came Alex Carey who has done fuck all for the better part of the summer.  He and Marsh combine for a 140 run partnership; Marsh scored 80 runs before getting out and Carey was still batting when Pat Cummins knocked in the winning rooms... leaving Carey at 98*... I don't think Carey minded much.  The drop of Marsh proved fatal in the end.

Some terminology before we get started.

In cricket a boundary is what you think of as a ground rule double, ball goes past the "fence" but not on the fly.  That's four runs.

A six, is well six runs.  That's what you think of as a home run.  Ball clears the boundary "fence" on the fly.

Wides... wild pitches, pitcher fucked up.

Leg Byes... past balls, wicket keeper (catcher) fucked up.

Byes... throwing errors or pitch hits a dude and ball bounces so far away no way the wicket keeper could get it.

There's a lot more terminology in the article but those can give the basics especially if you go to icc.com and watch the highlights video.

Spoiler

USA muzzled an experienced Pakistan top order, brought their hitters to heel, then produced a measured batting performance that tied the scores at 159-all.

Team USA got the first three Paki dudes out for very few runs.  When the Paki big dogs came in to bat, they did a bit of damage but not enough to put the match out of reach.  When team USA came in to bat, they didn't do anything flashy, but picked their spots to score runs and it was tied at the end of regulation.

This forced the game into a Super Over, and here is when USA really seemed like the veteran team on the circuit while Pakistan went into high-pressure-meltdown mode.

It went to extra innings and the way more talented team choked.  Sound familiar, Dodger fan?

Mohammad Amir, Pakistan's most experienced bowler, bowled three wides in his Super Over, the US batters stealing another run every time, and Mohammad Rizwan conceded another extra run on an overthrow off the last of these wides.

Paki pitcher threw a lot of wild pitches and the catcher had an error by overthrowing the second baseman on an attempted steal allowing another run to score.  Said Paki pitcher is also a known match fixer, hmmmmmmmmmm.

Thanks to the extras and other acts of fielding indiscipline from Pakistan, USA made 18 off their Super Over

USA gained 18 runs in the extra inning, with only 10 of them coming off batted balls.  The rest were from wild pitches and errors.

If this already seemed a tough ask for Pakistan to better, Saurabh Netravalkar made their job even more difficult. He had been outstanding for USA in regular play, taking 2 for 18 from his four overs. His Super Over was outstanding too, as he conceded just one boundary.

Saurabh Netawhatever threw four innings of relief giving up only 18 runs and got 2 outs in regulation.  He only gave up one ground rule double in the extra inning.

Thanks to four leg byes off the penultimate delivery, Shadab Khan had the opportunity to send the match into a second super over if he clobbered a six off the last ball. He could only hit it to deep point, all along the ground.

On the next to last pitch of the game, dumbass catcher forgot to catch the ball and it allowed four runs to score.  This meant the Pakis could technically tie the match on the last pitch if dude hit a home run. but he hit a groundball to the centerfielder.

The USA were jubilant, having taken down the biggest opposition they had ever faced.

Biggest opposition they had ever beaten.  Paki is not a top 4 side in world cricket.

Pakistan, ahead of their massive match against India, had been subjected to one of their greatest World Cup setbacks.

Pakis choked, that's what they do.

It's not as if Pakistan had had it in their grip and let it slip - USA had actually been in control of this match for much of its duration.

Pakis are lucky it even went to the super over.  USA should have won this match in 18 overs, tops.

Netravalkar and Kenjige share five wickets
Left-arm seamer Netravalkar had Rizwan caught at slip - fairly spectacularly by Steven Taylor - to begin with, second over.

Dude behind and to the right of the batsman (slip) made an unbeevable one-handed grab to take out one of Paki's best batsmen.  Seriously go look up the highlights for that grab.

Then, in the third, left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige had Usman Khan holing out to long-off, bringing Pakistan's score to 14 for 2.

In the third inning, junk-ball pitcher got another big batsman to fly out to centerfield.

Others would take wickets in between, of course, but these two would continue to impose themselves.

Other Paki fuckers got out at times, but those two were like getting out Ohtani and Betts with bases loaded.

Pakistan made only 35 in the powerplay, and Netravalkar bowled three overs for just eight runs in that phase.

USA pitchers dragged their nuts all over Paki batsmen in the early goings.

Kenjige came back in the middle overs and made crucial incisions, dismissing Shadab Khan, who looked the most fluent of Pakistan's batters, for 40 off 25 balls, before getting Azam Khan first ball with a fast slider. All up, these two took 5 for 48 in eight overs between them.

One of the middle relief pitchers came in and got a couple of big outs before Pakis could get some momentum rolling.

Netravalkar bowling the Super Over, and conceding just one four, was a bonus.

Dude kept it in the park for the most part when that was all he had to do to get a win.

Monank Patel made a match-winning 50 off 38 balls ICC/Getty Images

USA measured in their approach
Although this would turn out to be USA's first major act of giant-killing on the global stage, their measured batting performance gave no sense of being a bolt from the blue. Their openers were not parted for five overs, but they only made 36 together.

USA batsmen figured the best strategy was to stay alive as long as possible.  They hit a lot of foul balls and didn't swing at bad pitches.

Then the second-wicket partnership, between captain Monank Patel and Andries Gous, brought 68 runs in 48 balls, and formed the backbone of the chase.

USA had some work to do to get the requried number of runs.  The #3 batsman came in and with the other opening batsman scored enough runs to give them confidence.  These two bashed a bit more.

Monank provided most of the highlights in this partnership, making 50 off 38, hitting seven fours and one glorious six down the ground to get to his half-century, off Shaheen Shah Afridi. He was out soon after, but had left USA in a potentially winning position.

Our dog, Monank hit seven doubles and a home run off 38 pitches. Things were looking good for USA by the time he finally got out.

Pakistan pull things back at the death
Even with Monank and Gous out with 35 balls to go, Pakistan still had to bowl well, with USA only needing 49.

USA needed to only score 49 runs off the last 35 balls and had some of their better batsmen available since only 3 dudes had gotten out.  In T20 cricket this should be a piece of cake.  Last 35 balls, you should feel like you can chase 70 - 90 runs with confidence.

Naseem Shah, Shaheen and Amir shone through the death overs to leave USA needing 15 off the last over. Haris Rauf, landing his yorkers there or thereabouts, brought the equation down to 12 off 3.

Welp, thye went from only needing to score 49 runs off 35 balls to needing 12 runs of 3 balls.  Getting 12 off 3 is far from impossible, but way harder than the first scenario.

But then, Jones smashed a six off a low full-toss on the stumps, then with five required off the last ball, Nitish Kumar crashed a four over mid-off to tie the game.

Dude hit a home run to score six runs off a low middle cutter. After the home run USA needed four runs to tie the match or five runs to win it.  They hit a ground rule double (worth four runs in cricket) to tie it on the last ball.

Super over mayhem
It was at this point, though, that the more experienced international team lost their heads, and USA kept theirs.

Pakis choked in extra inning.

Both teams hit a four each in their Super Overs. But Pakistan's waywardness in terms of wides and overthrows cost them. USA won the Super Over 18 to 13.

Each team hit a ground rule double, but Pakis had way more wild pitches and throwing errors which cost them the match.  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Pak went full aggy.

On a different note, I am truly torn regarding Wednesday's USA vs IND tilt. Never in my lifetime would I have imagined being witness to the USA going up against India in any major sports competition.

West Indies we’re done and dusted until Sherfane Rutherford went berzerker scoring 37 runs by himself in the last two overs.  They were 7/76 before the Sherfane show got going.  They managed to post a respectable 149/9.  Won’t be the easy chase for the Kiwis that they thought they were going to have.

Low key hoping for six sixes in NZ's last over.

It's just one of many dumb rules in this sport.  But if you want to hear about something truly bizarre go read up on the 2019 ODI World Cup Final.

Match was tied after both teams' innings so they did a super over.  Both teams scored the same amount of runs in the super over.  One would think they would keep playing super overs until there was a winner.  Nope.  The winner was decided on the team that hit the most boundaries in the match.  That's like Game 7 of the World Series being determined by which team hit the most extra base hits in the game.

Any of you with a willow subscription or other means to watch this WI v SA match should tune in once the rain delay is over.

SA had probably their worst fielding perfomance in decades and still held WI for only 135.  WI come in to bowl and have taken out both SA openers in the first two overs.  Danger man QDK is one of the wickets.  This is going to be interesting since it's basically a knockout match.  Winner goes to the Semis, loser goes home.
