2018 Beer

Had a few people over yesterday.

I provided:

  • NXNW Zombie Dragon
  • Flying Man Air Racer IPA - I'd never heard of this local brewery but this was a solid west coast IPA
  • Austin East Ciders - a sixer of each (Honey, Dry, Grapefruit, Pineapple)

Each couple also brought some beer...

  • Zilker Third Base - this had to have been the last in existence
  • Zilker Marco IPA
  • ABW Flavor Country
  • 2 growlers of Electric Jelly Fish

It was a most excellent selection. My head hurt like a mother fucker this morning.

Most of my wife's family will drink water or Coke before they'll drink any of my beers. I like to watch them open the cooler, dig around, and then walk off disappointed when there are no Bud Lights to be found.

Heh, like the lady I saw in the Asheville, NC in the beer section yesterday at the store. Monster selection of local stuff. She asked me where the Bud Light was.

Btw, I’m in Asheville for a week. The selection is overwhelming. Started with Green Man, Highland, ABC, and Catawba. BIL brought some Moon Man and Spotted Cow.

Finally tried it.  It's serviceable, not great but certainly drinkable.  Seems a little thin or one-note, compared to the other local options.

So I won't be walking past Gold, Pilz, Pearl Snap, or Hans Pils to get it, but if none of those options are available, I'd buy this again.

Edit:  Oh, and it doesn't suck, so deft is off the hook.

I had a Native Texan side-by-side with  Brazos Valley's Pilsner, which I think they call Two Step, and thin was exactly the description that came to mind.

BVB's was pretty good. It's not quite in Live Oak's league but it was pretty good.

I did notice that Big Bend had changed the name and branding of its Hefe.  I liked the original version ok, but honestly thought Steve would have made it more like LO, which he didn't.  I'm sure he wanted to make his own mark, but it was always just ok for me.

I'll give it a try though, always up for another good hefe.

fwiw, I thought the original was better than this current version. When it first came out I had one side-by-side with Live Oak's hefe and could not discern any difference. I was told by one of their rep's at an HEB sampling that the recipe didn't change, only the packaging but I'm not buying that. It tastes different to me.

Not a beer snob but Alstadt was sampling at HEB and I enjoyed all 3 of them. I bought a sixer of the Kolsch and it's a great summer beer.

I don't get the hate for Alstadt. Their lager is fine - it could use a tad more hops for my taste but I suspect it's more true to a German style than my NEIPA corrupted palette is looking for these days.

It takes a lot for a Kolsch to get me excited so I'll just comment that there wasn't anything disqualifyingly bad with it that I could tell. I'd drink it before Fireman's 4 if those were my choices.

I saw that they recently came out with an Alt but I haven't had that one yet.

It's definitely different, and their head brewer has said as much. He's a native German.

Any New Orleans breweries worth visiting? Looking at urban south, NOLA, and courtyard. Would be a weekday afternoon visit for a couple of hours.

If you go across the lake to abita, they just give you a cup and free  reign on a wall of taps for like 45 minutes.   Try NOT to get drunk.

Be on the lookout for Parish Brewing and their Ghost in the Machine in particular. Last time I was in NO, I found a fresh four pack at that liquor store just across and down the street from the famous beignet place. Glorious.

More Americans are putting down Buds and Coors, instead grabbing wine, liquor, Corona and Michelob.

Americans' changing drinking habits have been taking shape for years, but the trend accelerated in 2018. Beer shipments from US breweries are down 3.5% so far this year, according to The Beer Institute, an industry trade group.

The big four US brands — Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light, and Budweiser — have been hit particularly hard.

What's wrong with Big American Beer? Drinkers think it's stale, compared to the innovative new brands and creative concepts emerging from craft breweries, vineyards and distilleries.

"Well-established category leaders are finding it challenging to maintain their relevance against a backdrop with so much innovation and new brand activity," said Cowen analyst Vivien Azer. "You now see a much more promiscuous alcohol consumer."

"Americans are still drinking beer -- just better beer." Then they list Corona and Michelob Ultra. Lulz

I’m going to be in Boston-Portland-Lake Winnipesaukee next week.

Any suggestions on breweries/pubs to visit or beers to try/bring home?

Stowe is too far away.

That’s easy, Allagash. I support their whole catalog of beer and so far have found zero varieties that I wish I had skipped. I keep a steady supply of their White on hand.

Picked this up over lunch. There was an anti-theft device on it, so it must be good.

(512) Pecan Porter is one of my favorite Austin beers. I had this on tap a while ago. The bourbon barrel takes away from the uniqueness of the pecan porter. Unfortunately, I didn't remember that until I was composing this post.c0837833930cef65896301f692e754a2.jpg

Tomorrow at Pinthouse...

We took this year’s Peach of a Pale -5.5% ABV, our collaboration with Hops & Grain, and will serve it from a frozen margarita machine! The Simcoe, El Dorado, and Mosaic hops, and plenty of peaches still shine through with notes of peach, fruit, and a comforting fluffy finish. This will be available tomorrow at 11AM alongside its non-frozen counterpart, Peach of A Pale. This Fruited Milkshake American Pale Ale concoction is destined to cool you off from the summer heat.

If you’re in Portland, Bissell Brothers and Maine Beer Company for sure.

So this may be a terrible question that opens me up to ridicule but are there any good breweries in Las Vegas to check out? I'll be there Monday evening flying solo so other than going to a casino, I can't think of much else to do. All the shows are dark.
