Lol with the “what we learned after day 1 of spring football”. Umm nothing? I don’t give a fuck until August when it matters, let’s rest any questionable injury and hit the weights hard over the summer and come in fresh for fall camp.

You're in the wrong thread.  Move along now.

I was slightly confused.  Sam threw the backside seam route off the RPO and hit #80 (Brewer?) right on the hands and in stride.

Despite our experience from the past decade, QBs hitting receivers on the hands and in stride is legal in the game of football.

And more experience at the QB position.  As much as Sam improved over the course of the 2018 season, I'm sure Herman was thinking about the possibility of seeing true freshman Sam during those second halves.

And after playing incredibly well through the entire middle of the season, freshman Sam made a cameo appearance in the 4th Q against KU.

Spring Preview: Can No. 9 Texas handle the hype?

Quote

Texas’ status: Back.

The Longhorns enter the offseason with more hype than perhaps any team in the country. Tom Herman’s transformed a team long in the doldrums in just two years, and Texas is again expected to compete with Oklahoma for Big 12 championships. That’s reflected in the Longhorns’ No. 9 ranking in the still-too-early Top 25 for the spring.

There are some questions, however. Texas returns the 121st-most production in the country, per SB Nation. There’s also the larger-scale theme of how the Longhorns will handle expectations after so long away from contention.

Herman’s recruited at an elite level, leaving plenty of talent in the pipeline to replace some key departures. Let’s explore Texas’ offseason below:

1. Big Offseason Question: How Does Texas Handle The Hype?

“We’re baaaaaaaaaack.” – Sam Ehlinger

The Texas Longhorns officially returned to the national stage with those words following the Sugar Bowl. Texas resisted that big-picture thinking for much of Herman’s first two seasons on the Forty Acres. But with their convincing 10th win over the year – over SEC power Georgia, no less – the Longhorns guaranteed themselves a spot in every preseason top 10 poll.

It’s deserved in many ways.

Texas proved itself a potential College Football Playoff team with its wins over Oklahoma and Georgia last season. More so, the Longhorns were in every game they played and came only a quarter away from the program’s first conference championship since 2009.

This is important context because it’s been an entire generation since the Longhorns have been in this position. Outside of last year’s run, Texas’ players have not dealt with being frontrunners. And the Longhorns certainly have not contended well with preseason expectations over the years. Texas began five of the last nine years as a preseason Top 25 team, and in only two of those seasons did the Longhorns finish within the Top 25.

The Longhorns are no longer an underdog, nor are they in the fringes of the national conversation. Texas is back following Ehlinger’s statement.

Now the Longhorns must prove they can win consistently.

2. Breakout Player: Malcolm Roach

Roach played out of position at linebacker for much of his junior season because of a shortage of bodies. Add in some injury issues, and Roach had a tepid 24-tackle, 1.5-tackle-for-loss campaign. Back at his more natural defensive end spot, I’d expect Roach to emerge as one of the stalwarts of Texas’ defense next season. Texas must replace both Charles Omenihu (18 TFL, 9.5 sacks) and Breckyn Hager (7.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks) on the edge, and Roach is a more-than-capable replacement given his experience.

He’s also one of the more flexible pieces on Texas’ roster given his linebacker experience. Expect Roach to challenge for Texas’ lead in tackles for loss next year, positioning himself for a run at the NFL.

A word to the wise along Texas’ defensive front, though: Moro Ojomo is a future beast. He’ll rotate in at Roach’s spot and flash plenty.

3. Instant Impact Contributor: Parker Braun

This is a pretty easy one. Texas had holes along its offensive front after losing three starters, and Bruan is a plug-and-play piece on the inside. He’ll fit well at either right guard or left guard, both of which are open. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound Hallsville, Texas, graduate earned all-ACC honors each of the last two seasons after being named a Freshman All-American in 2016. Braun rated as the No. 7 overall transfer on the market this past cycle.

4. Best-Case Scenario

Texas really is back and makes the College Football Playoff. That’s now the expectation in Austin following the Georgia upset. Ehlinger emerges as a Heisman-level player, distributing the football to one of the best wide receiver groups in the country. The defense loses a ton from last year, but young players from back-to-back top three recruiting classes play up to their billing. Texas’ season will mostly be determined by the end of October. Texas hosts LSU and Oklahoma State, in addition to games with TCU, Oklahoma and West Virginia. Get through that stretch unscathed or even with a single loss, and the Longhorns likely play for a Big 12 championship.

5. Worst-Case Scenario

Texas regresses back to the team that too often plays down to its competition – see, Maryland. Ehlinger takes a pounding under center, and injuries hobble what should be a breakout junior campaign. The defense also fails to maintain – and really Texas must get better on that side of the ball – following the departure of eight starters. The Longhorns would be out of contention early following losses to LSU and Oklahoma. Texas has a schedule that sets up for a CFB Playoff run. But that dream is easily squashed if things don’t come together quickly.

Gotta think Roschon will have a lot more power and accuracy once the coaches correct that overstride.

Yeah. He needs a year or two to fix his base and weight shift when he throws. On the bright side, when he shifts his weight right, he has a good arm and accuracy. If he gets that fixed, combined with his mobility and play making, he could be special.

Wiley looks the part physically.

Wiley is way bigger than I expected. He could be an absolute freak by the time he finishes his time on the 40.

Yeah, Wiley's recruiting ranking was off simply because he played QB in high school. Even Herman said he thought they signed the best two TE's in the country during the NSD press conference. Maybe it was bullshit but I've never seen him talk like that about other positions.

Wiley is a freak at his size. 247 had him as the #112 best player in the state. No chance in hell he should be that low.

In a funny twist, just like we and OU are fighting over Best WR Class, we're doing the same with aggy for Best TE Class.

aggy definitely got the two most polished and ready guys, but Liebrock and Wiley are going to be filthy in a couple years.

We're starting to look like a power program again. Having grown men on both LOS.

This. As much change as we've seen in the game over the past decade or two, it is really still pretty simple. Win the trenches, win the game.

I don't think you realize how drunk two Gator fans would be in Death Valley. This was the year that the Gators were forced to reschedule, losing two home games in the swamp to an away game in Baton Rouge.

Obviously the kid is exceptional at the PR side of this, and perhaps that answer was scripted by Bianco and company, but this is a great response.

That’s a Herman line, almost verbatim

One by Green, one by Boyce. Boyce also had one in the raw video. Maybe we'll get a good competition for that #2 CB spot.

Also, kinda surprised we don't have a bunch of 'sourced' notes for the practice today.

It was a closed practice today. Next open practice is on Friday.
