Can't think of the Wasp without recalling a certain history book and that famous B&W shot of the ship in flames shortly after being torpedoed.

In this context, it's almost unbelievable to think "only" 194 men died aboard her.

R/V Petrel kicking some ass. Thanks Paul Allen.

75ish years of searching then in a couple expeditions:
Indianapolis
Lexington
Juneau
Hornet
Wasp

+whatever lesser WWII finds I’m too lazy to look up.

Going to put itself out of work.

I've always preferred names like Wasp and Hornet instead of the names of presidents.

There should always be ships of the line in the USN named Wasp, Hornet, Enterprise, Yorktown, Lexington, Saratoga and Ranger.  And I might even include Essex, Intrepid, Midway, Constellation and Bonhomme Richard in there.  Fuck naming them after Presidents.

Our servers at work used to be named after the carriers.   Some dipwad came along and changed them.

One of the new carriers is going to be named Enterprise.  Wasp, Essex, Bonhomme Richard, and Hornet are amphibs.  Those seem to mostly get the cool names these days.

Yorktown, Ranger, Lexington, Saratoga, Midway, Constellation were all decommissioned in like the 90s or 2000s.  They'll probably be back.  America, the carrier, was decommissioned in the 90s, and is now an amphib (and class, should have been the name for what is the Ford class but oh well).  The Intrepid name hasn't been used for a while though, which is unfortunate.

I am not in the military, but I think I’m going to write my son or daughter a letter that is similar in nature, even though it will be far less in stature and meaning

I am a Carrier Veteran. We (USS America Carrier Veterans Association) fought like hell to get a carrier to carry our name forward after ours was sunk. I hope we always have a USS America. LHA or not.
