Beto is the perfect VP candidate.  Fantastic, energetic campaigner.  Could conceivably do the job of president if needed.  Can calm moderates into supporting a ticket with an outspoken lib like Warren at the top.  Being from Texas will balance someone from the coasts in the top spot.  Plus being some border state cred into an election in which immigration will be a big issue.

That's about where I can see him.

The same problems I had with Obama (hopey changey, but no real executive experience -- and that shit matters).  Shit, that same thing is a core failing of Trump (he's never been an executive who has to answer to anyone -- and that means he's never been an executive at all.  Nevermind his numerous other hideous failings, of course).

I want someone who has had to work WITH other people, in challenging situations.  At the very least, have some real experience in the trenches of legislative battle, so you have an idea how this shit works.  Beto has a fair amount of that, but not a lot.

Beto's upside is what Mojo posted....which means he's VP material.

So people reply to your “concern” with well reasoned replies and this is your garbage response?

Any D will beat Trump. I have said over and over that Rs will paint any D candidate as a socialist so it won’t matter who they run.

Obama proved a moderate position and an empty suit will be railroaded by Rs.

In the field of D candidates, no one has made a compelling case for for Beto except he is cool and white hence the movie reference.

Centrist Ds are in denial and think there will be a white, centrist savior.

I really think so too. The positives he brings complement just about every other presidential candidate out there. Youth to offset old. Idealism to offset policy wonk. Mainstream to offset further left. From Texas/Border/Southwest to offset Coastal or Yankee. He could be used in a number of versatile ways but I don't think he'd pair well with Mayor Pete.

Like many, I personally don't think he's ready but I'd vote for him in a heartbeat over Trump (or Pence). My favorite ticket is still Warren/Beto right now.

I’m of the opinion Beto beats Trump the most soundly so if that’s what is most important to you, go Beto!

However, I do not think he’d make the best president...I’d go Warren or Kamala before Beto but Pete or Beto would still be fantastic.

You are right. A centrist like Hillary would probably lose

Anyone like Hillary would lose regardless of their policy.

Beto, Biden and Harris are all polling in the top 4 (along with Bernie) in a head to head. This notion that a more moderate candidate is more risky than a far left candidate is childish nonsense completely detached from any reality. It's literal fake news.

Both are empty suits and have no real policy position besides saying they will unite the country. Oh, cool! Beto used to be in a band.

Only reason people are mad at Schultz is that he won’t run as a D instead of an independent. I don’t see much sunlight between the two beside Beto’s cool factor.

What does that have to do with my original point that more moderate dems are polling at the top of the list? I appreciate what you're saying and I have concerns about Beto's readiness to run the country, but that's not what we're talking about. Happy to have that discussion separately, but my original post is addressing the notion that an evil centrist as the nominee immediately puts Trump at an advantage somehow. All of the data available to us shows that not to be the case.

Polling at this stage is only brand awareness and doesn’t mean shit for election

OK, so things aren't looking good for our beautiful boy right now, but let's think about how this works out for him moving forward...

1) If he can keep his head on straight and stay positive, his version of retail politics could win him some fans in Iowa over the next year. Remember, it's A VERY LONG TIME and a sustained charm campaign can get him moving.

2) If he hires some smart people to develop a good policy platform for him, he'll gain confidence and start establishing credibility.

I am very disappointed in the fundraising, and I think his best shot was shock'n'awe, but it's not over yet.

Like I said to start the thread: He is the most interesting character in this race. He's a wildcard.

I don't disagree but it's the only tangible data we have right now. At the very least it shows that, as of today, "moderate" as a bogeyman seems to be only be a thing in far left circles

In the WaPo and WSJ articles above it says that Beto recused himself from City COuncil votes involving his Father-in-law's development plans, but apparently that's not true.

This piece from from The American Prospect is the most in-depth and detailed piece I've seen on this issue. Really good read.

Amid pressure, O’Rourke ultimately did begin recusing himself on votes relating to the city’s authority to carry out the plan, a few months into the fight. The reason he gave for doing so in dozens of affidavits was not Sanders’s involvement but his wife’s work for a charter school in the development footprint, which seems to be far less relevant. And he didn’t recuse himself on a critical vote in 2008, instead providing the deciding margin to kill a measure limiting the city’s ability to use eminent domain in the affected neighborhoods.

Also, for those wanting to hear Beto speak Spanish, the article links to Beto getting yelled at by poor Latino women and responding with, "That's just, like, your opinion man"

Jesus... these slides

I love people talking about “we’ll wait until they dig up the skeletons...”. A) you don’t think Cruz did his best.  It’s not like he was in a spring game election only showing the vanilla offense.  That fucker was running the Statue of Liberty against ousux.  B) after electing Trump forgive me if I don’t bat an eye at something short of CJK5H.

Beto, please don't do this ever again. Do not apologize to Republicans, ever. Do not grab the knife out of their hands and stab yourself with it.

Be strong. Be tough. Don't apologize to these jackals.

IOWA CITY, IOWA (The Borowitz Report)—The nascent Presidential campaign of Beto O’Rourke took a serious hit on Friday with the leak of a high-school-era mixtape by the candidate that included a song by REO Speedwagon.

The mixtape, which prominently featured the song “Keep on Loving You,” sent shockwaves through the O’Rourke campaign, forcing the candidate to address the controversy on the hustings.

“In my youth, I put a song on a mixtape that I deeply regret adding,” O’Rourke told a stunned crowd at an Iowa City diner. “REO Speedwagon does not represent who I am.”

The Democratic strategist Tracy Klugian cautioned that O’Rourke’s apology might not have put the mixtape scandal to rest.

“If that’s the only tape out there, then Beto moves on from this,” he said. “But if a mixtape comes out with Air Supply on it, he’s done.”

He's been on an apology tour today and it's been pretty pathetic. I have the sadz.

Why would he apologize for some stories and poems he wrote a long time ago? Why would he apologize for being in some dumb hacker thing that didn't hurt anyone?

God damnit.

Y’all need to calm the fuck down. Barely anyone is paying attention to this shit right now, and an apology on things like teenage hacking and the like kills the story, while a no comment/digging in gives it air for another day or so. This is the oppo dump that helps clear the way forward to concentrate on message and let his style do its work.

While the small percentage of an even smaller percentage of Americans obsessed with politics rend their garments about Beto being on some apology tour, I for one, find a leader who takes ownership of a bad statement and acknowledges it and promises to do better instead of lying about reality and hollering “FAKE NEWS!” quite refreshing.

But if I’ve learned anything about the assholes that post here in the two years I’ve been a fellow asshole, is that everyone here overreacts to everything, both positive and negative.

It’s all “TRUMP IS GOING TO JAIL TODAY!!!” or “WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE! TURN OFF THE LIGHTS, AMERICA IS FINISHED!!” here. Nothing in between.

Whilst the rest of the country is farting along, blithely and briefly pondering for a moment about that Bego guy they saw on CNN today before scratching their nuts and telling Netflix they want to watch the next episode.

Kind of fucked up that Beto hates his own fans.

Ultra Trendies

----------------------------------------
xXx ULTRA TRENDIES are usually the 'scene sluts' that many of the menfolk
admire so. They show up, get drunk with the band, and tell the lead singer, "I
really like your music. I think it's a lot like the Sex Pistols. Sooo... you
wanna fuck?"
^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^

Well, now you've got your ULTRA TRENDY identified, so whaddya gonna do?

^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^___^^^^^
xXx Tell the Nazi Skins in your area that this certain ULTRA TRENDY has AIDS.
xXx Tell the ULTRA TRENDY that the new trend is to butt-fuck skinheads.
-----------------------------------------

lol

He was 17-years-old when he wrote this, or maybe 16. This shit is, BY FAR, the most relatable and likable thing about him. Old pieces of shit like Bernie and me only had clay tablets to scrawl our asinine, sexually-frustrated teenage pseudo-rebellion on, but Beto had a way of archiving for future generations every dumb thought, and that is 100% in line with modern reality. And it's cool and good.

One of them is "My Day with the Dentist"

By now I'm drooling all over the place, because their godamn saliva-

at all.

Of course, I can't talk because the right side of my face is silly putty
and he now has about thirty tools in my mouth. So, of course, he begins to ask
me some more questions.

No one in their 40's should have to apologize for the dumb shit they said as a teen. Everyone was regarded during that time of their life. Beto documented his stream of consciousness during his youth on the internet and there is a lot of silly shit that will keep popping up. He should have just owned it without apologizing.

If you would have kept reading you might have realized I was referring to his “helping raise my kids” quote.

Surprised this didn't come out in the Senate Race. Cruz would have had a field day. It would all be bullshit, but he would anyway.

We're going to have to cut people some slack for shit they said and did when they were 16 or else we can never have another male as President. At least not one under 50.

That was an even dumber thing to apologize for, it was an off the cuff joke and everyone knows it.

Posted

Jesus, he didn’t cry about it.

He acknowledged he was joking but chose his words poorly and that the way women reacted made him reflect on how he speaks about his marriage.

There is literally nothing wrong with that. It kills the issue and, as I said, after almost three years of Trump, it’s nice to see a leader not lie and gaslight when they get called on something.

Please tell me the positive in being a dick and digging your heels in on something so meaningless? That would have extended the stupidity another news cycle and been, well, stupid.

Every single candidate has already or is going to say something that someone won’t like. And if enough people don’t like it, they’ll address it and move on. Except Trump.

The voters that want a dick for president already have their guy.

And then there’s the other 60% of us.

I understand the need to tell everyone to fuck off because we’ve been told essentially that for three years but that won’t be a winning strategy.
