Jimbo 2021: Meemaw's Got a Brand New Bag

Overall agreed, thanks for the answers.  Top 200 sounds about right.  I expect the Shavers, Bush, Eagles, Wrights to be in the .93 - .95 range... Not the .96 - .98 which seems to set a lot of these guys up for failure, or at at least doesn't give them the hint they need to look for developmental coaches at the next level rather than bags and easy starting jobs

Tarp has an article titled VIP notes and thoughts as Texas A&M comes off another scrimmage which appears to contain zero information from the scrimmage and instead is basically a depth chart summary that just about anyone on this board could've posted within reason. There are some gems in this summary though ...

I posted some items yesterday about how the Aggies were going to replace the productivity of not just the departed Jhamon Ausbon but also the remainder of the receiving corps from last season (which are officially all gone). Now, we're going to move on to the rest of the program and as we did at one point last week we'll try to make this a position by position breakdown beginning with the quarterback spot and moving on from there. The Aggies apparently had more people healthy for last weekend's outing as opposed to the first one that occurred over a week ago and so you're going to see some different names.

To start off with, people I talk to feel really good about this football team even though there's been some personnel losses due to injuries and opt outs. Those are occurring at campuses across the country and for A&M everything seems to be happening with regard to the passing game which may be driving your perception but not necessarily that of the observers on campus. Otherwise, observers think that this is a better team this season and that you'll see this on the football field as the season gets going.

QUARTERBACK

We discussed senior Kellen Mond yesterday who is the unquestioned starter and leader of the team. He's more confident, more accurate, and he's setting an example with the way he watches film with some of the wideouts so that they're on the same page.

Freshman Haynes King brings a lot of mental toughness to the position. He's impressed everyone with his work ethic, leadership, and athleticism and he's pushing redshirt freshman Zach Calzada in every aspect of his game to be better as well. To use an old term that described Roger Staubach back when he was with the Cowboys, he dies hard. He is going to make his competition better and the players around him better.

RUNNING BACK

The two deep at the position is essentially Isaiah Spiller and Earnest Crownover at one spot and Ainias Smith and Devon Achane at the smaller or halfback position. Crownover has impressed everyone with his physicality. He is a big back who doesn't just count on his size to make things happen....he runs with good pad level and lean and runs over and through people. In addition, he is considered to be an impact player in terms of his pass protection...as in when he picks people up he stops them in their tracks. He's probably been the most underrated newcomer in camp so far.

Look for the smaller backs to be used in a variety of ways this fall...one back sets, split backs, slots motioning into the backfield...in ways that will get the ball in space or on the move. This is one of the reasons that people think that Smith will be the Aggies' most explosive skill player this fall.

WIDEOUTS

I talked a lot about the receiving corps yesterday so here's a generalization: this group finally has some experience among the backups and is faster as a whole. They're going to need to put into situations in which they can use that speed moreso than what we've seen (crossing routes, screens, etc.) and they may not be the blockers in the running game that bigger, more experienced players would have been. Those are tradeoffs that A&M is going to have to make if it is to get more chunk plays in the passing game.

TIGHT END

This position was denuded by injuries to Baylor Cupp and freshman Blake Smith (who was having a very promising fall camp, especially in terms of catching the football). As a result, you're more likely to see one back sets and less two tight end alignments.

You haven't heard from Jalen Wydermyer as much but that's not because he's been ineffective....it's just that there's been an emphasis on trying to rebuild the receiving corps and getting those guys sufficient reps to find out who can play and to make sure that those guys can play when they're on the field.

In order to complement Wydermyer, senior Ryan Renick is probably going to see more time than anyone else when the Aggies need a blocker at that spot. If you're looking for a receiver, converted quarterback/running back Connor Blumrick has shown that he can catch the ball when given the opportunity (although he probably lacks the bulk to be a down to down blocker at this point).

To the best of our knowledge, frosh Fadil Diggs is still working at defensive end.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Senior Ryan McCollum participated in this week's scrimmage and so the seasons anticipated starting five is pretty much dialed in with him at center, Kenyon Green (left side) and Jared Hocker (right side) at the guards, and Dan Moore (left side) and Carson Green (right side) at the tackles. It's a unit that's undergoing a baptism of fire to an extent because of the quality of the Aggies' defensive front but the starting five is capable of holding their own.

DEFENSIVE LINE

The four best are Demarvin Leal, Micheal Clemons, Bobby Brown, and Jayden Peevy. The interesting part is that Leal can play both inside or outside and that Clemons can play either as a heavy five tech or an edge player. That doesn't mean that Tyree Johnson won't start on the edge as one of the first four but just what a dilemma the coaching staff when it comes to making the call on what type on who is going to get playing time up front.

Clemons has always been a very good one on one player in drills and has been handful for people to try to block in those situations. However, he's reportedly having his best camp ever because those attributes are transitioning into his play in 11 on 11 scenarios. He's making more plays than ever, not just shedding and using his hands well but reading blocks and getting to ball carriers from the back side. People talk about his leadership but the big thing is that he seems to understand the game better than ever and so he's making more plays.

Leal is the closest thing that the Aggies have to a Justin Madubuike in terms of his get off. He's someone that you can count on to play behind the line of scrimmage and generate negative plays for the offense. He's also technically proficient with quick hands and he's in much better shape than he was last year (both due to injury and the fact that he was a newcomer on campus).

Defensive tackle Derick Hunter is another player who has shown improvement as well. It's considered to be the deepest and most talented group of the Jimbo Fisher era in College Station.

LINEBACKERS

We laid out the linebacking corps last week...Buddy Johnson and Anthony Hines are the starters, Aaron Hansford is becoming a better all around player, and Edgerrin Cooper is a star in the making.

SECONDARY

Freshman Jaylon Jones is the Aggies' best corner. He's the most physically gifted in terms of his size/speed ratio and his technique and leverage are that of an older player. Myles Jones should be the starter at the opposite spot.

Due to the fact that you've had some opt outs (Elijah Blades) and injuries (Devin Morris per Fisher) which have affected both corner and nickel, there's been a lot of movement behind the scenes there to develop depth as well as find a starting nickel (which should be sophomore Erick Young). Veteran Clifford Chattman is generally considered to be a better nickel than corner and so Morris and Brian George will probably make their way as corners in the depth chart.

Demani Richardson and Leon O'Neal are the safeties and O'Neal is considered to be a vastly improved player by his peers and other observers. He's making more plays and fewer mistakes. Freshman Antonio Johnson is a future fixture at safety and if anyone ahead of him can't make it happen he might be the present as well.

SPECIAL TEAMS

These guys always get short shrift but not from me.

Aussie Nik Constantinou may not be Braden Mann but he has good hang time and has improved his consistency via his plant foot and hips. He's still anticipated to provide long distance punting.

Seth Small and Caden Davis are still splitting kicks for the field goal gig. Davis has gotten better from last year's fall camp when he looked like he needed to adjust to kicking at the college level. However, Davis is probably going to have to be better than Small to win the starting job. Small has also gotten better in terms of his leg strength.

Davis and Drew Riethman are battling for the kickoff job. Riethman is more experienced but Davis has that big leg and he is capable of sending the ball out of the end zone on every kick if A&M will let him.

The return men may be an interesting mix. Ainias Smith was the Aggies' primary return man on kickoffs and punts and as a result A&M may held him back from seeing the field so much. Remember that he was getting quite a few balls out of the slot up until the Arkansas game when he became the starting punt returner. Although he came in for an injured Kendrick Rogers in that game and caught five balls, thereafter he was used primarily in the return game.

Smith remains A&M's best return man and especially on punt returns (fourth in the SEC in average per return last year) and Chase Lane could be an answer on kickoffs as well. However don't be surprised if some of the true freshmen such as Demond Demas, Devon Achane, and Moose Muhammad III see the field on kickoff returns (which have become fewer in today's college game due to the rules and also are easier for youngsters to deal with both in terms of fielding the ball and reading their blocks).

Tarp’s nonsense brings up a good question. Can you really have experience among your backups if your backups now have to be your starters and they still don’t actually have any real experience anyways? I’m sure aggy philosophers will be pondering this one for the rest of eternity.

That's almost certainly true in terms of raw talent.  But their offense doesn't really rely on putting freak athletes in space and letting them go off.  Their offense is predicted on super crisp routes and understandings of coverage, as well as WRs blocking for the run game.  In no universe are three super raw, young WRs better than the guys who just left.

Yeah, but this simply isn't true about Ausbon. Ausbon is a freak athlete and talent. He was a composite top 100 recruit coming out of HS because he put up a 122.22 SPARQ. Preston had a 99.0 SPARQ for comparison.

This is just what aggys do when their system doesn't maximize WRs. They spin with "the younger guys are more talened."

Don't know if Jimbo realized this or not, but if a track athlete is on the football ball, their scholarship has to count against the 85. Soooo, I guess they're going to yank James Foster's scholarship since he's in the portal

The fuck is this shit? I know everyone in the SEC is paying and nobody gives a shit but you'd like to think they at least try and keep it a little more subtle. We are at the point where I know the name and address of the Ags bag lady and she's actively crowd sourcing hook-ups for players that she's naming.

Karen's "I'm looking for an aggy football fan who specifically owns and manages their own rental property to negotiate rent with (no agencies need apply!) may have been a little over the top.

UT seems to have seriously stepped up their game in the "What starts here changes the world" promos. The clips they rolled out on Saturday were on-point. Props to whomever.

Not only was Ausbon atm's leading receiver, he was 5th in SEC in total receiving yards and 7th in total receptions. Perhaps he'll make it in the NFL, perhaps not. But if he doesn't, it says nothing positive about their program. And now, if he does make it after sitting out the season, it also says nothing good about their program. Lose/lose either way for aggy but as always advantage aggy.

Looch really goes all in on Florida State, Big 12, and Texas. "Texas A&M is more of a football school than Florida State. Yea I know they have the history, but we're SEC aggy!"

Then talks about the Big 12 flubs before showing the real scumbag he is about how the Austin and national media prop up "Simple Sam" (you know what he's referencing) when he puts up numbers again nobody.

Just another banner hour of radio for this fanboy piece of shit.

They are so desperate to get someone in the defensive backfield that can run that they're raiding T&F for bodies.

Walton played DB at Miramar on a team with multiple DI recruits.  He was unranked and not recruited for football.

Maybe he's just there for a practice body this year, and might go on scholarship next year? He won't count against the 85 until he sees the field

The more Texas wins.. the more this guy will lose his shit..  He has been spewing that Texas was just one loss away from a complete dumpster fire inside the locker room.  He has said that recruiting has been a joke and that the only reason why UT has high ranking classes is because of the BOMC.

UT is not recruiting elite players like aggys/Jimbo has.. Simple Sam?  Mond underrated?

He's going to get more and more petty with his takes til even his sheep posters realize how bad their own program is compared to "overhyped" UT. I'm here to see the meltdown and it's all coming together for this fall.

Newsflash Billy. You're Aggy. You've never won shit. Florida State has. Therefore they're more of a football school than Aggy.

I hope this means they tapped out on Shemar Turner. Yes, I know they don't play the same position, but nonetheless.

Wiltfong’s VIP note on it mentions his sources say 70/3 Ags for Taleeq Robbins from Philadelphia, which would give them 5 DL commits. Obviously they’d trap door someone for Turner but still interesting.
