I got curious to see if Willy T ever managed a higher obp than slg and he did once during his career in 2008 with the Rockies.  It was also the year he led the majors with 68 stolen bases.

Inside the Astros Cutting-Edge Approach to Minor-League Pitching Development

I posted this on the MLB thread but wanted to share it here as well

Real Sports did a piece on foul ball injuries a few years back. it showed that paying attention isn't really enough. i can't find the whole segment but the trailer gives you an idea.

Re: Kaplan article

Good info...and point taken about their ability to flip some pitchers they've developed to improve the big league roster...

But at some point they are going to need to produce a good starter. The Astros had 4 pitchers who were top-100 prospects before this season started: Whitley, Martin, James, Bukauskas. Martin has shown promise, and you can forgive struggling in his first few MLB games; James has been pretty bad, even in relief; and Whitley and Bukauskas have been really bad in the minors. All this after Martes, Appel, etc.

Not sure how to factor in guys like Musgrove, Folty, et al - starters with other clubs who impacted their development.

Given that Strom/org has worked well with pitchers at the big-league level, I assume that the failings of our top pitching prospects has been mostly bad luck...

no.  i'm fine with him being fat.  there have been fat baseball players before.

the most egregious thing is that he's fat, but somehow he's a slap hitter.  his biggest hits this year (all 5 of them) have been bloop singles or well placed doubles.  we're talking about a guy slugging .303 here.  german marquez is slugging .363 and he's a pitcher.  he's the first pitcher i looked up because i have him in fantasy and saw he hit a triple the other day.

marquez has 9 rbi in 26 plate appearances.  white has 8 rbi in 125 pa.  white has 7 xbh and we're 1/3 of the way thru the season.

in the old days, the brewers or orioles or whomever would have some slow pitch softball looking guys.  they would hit .212 and knock 25-30 homers, and that's who they were.  white is fat and slow and can't hit homers.  i just don't understand what the point is anymore.  gattis off the street would be an improvement tomorrow.

Peacock vs Fiers Friday should be fun

Battle of the two guys that saved the 2017 staff’s ass until JV arrived. The two of them combined for 31% of the team’s starts prior to JV’s first outing in an Astros uniform.

Of course, fans and children at baseball games need to be protected, of course. The netting could be extended, without significantly interfering with the game experience, and at a relatively low cost. Of course.

But maybe...

Maybe if you bring your kid to a game, sit in a rocket zone, and don't pay attention, it's a tiny bit your fault.

Bukauskas had a couple bad outings to start the year, but he has shown reasons for optimism.

The 4 guys you named are all really young still (James, if not in age, in experience. And he came out of nowhere last year, if anything he works against your point). Appel was before they revolutionized their approach. Martes got hurt.

Also, just like last time you made a post like this, you forgot McCullers.

I didn't forget McCullers (this time) - was commenting on the latest group of highly-touted pitching prospects (if Appel was before they revolutionized their approach, then McCullers was way before it). Mentioned Musgrove/Folty to acknowledge that the club had contributed (to some degree) to their development into legit starters.

Martes is hurt, but he'd be missing time anyway due to his PED suspension, and he hasn't pitched well at any level since 2016 in AA.

James doesn't work against my point. I get what you're saying - he came out of nowhere to become a legit prospect, and credit goes to he and the club for that. But my point wasn't that they struggle to develop good prospects, it's that they haven't developed good MLB starters. And yeah, he or any of the other guys may emerge - the book isn't written on any of them yet, and certainly there is reason for optimism for all of them.

I'm not saying they can't develop pitching, or that their system doesn't work - I actually wrote the opposite, attributing lack of success to bad luck.

I'm still confused at how you fracture the rib of a 6'5 grown ass man by giving a massage. That would be difficult to do even by punching him; much less a massage.

That video is hilarious. I can't believe he went to his fiance's youtube channel to clear the air. She looked fucking pissed when talking about people blaming her.
