2019 Houston Astros Thread

I’m always a little amazed at how really good teams are really good at defense and really bad teams are usually really bad at defense

I get shitty pitching and hitting means you’re going to have a shitty record but it feels like even if you can’t hit a curveball or lay off a 95 mph four seamer up, it still seems you should be able to do t-ball fundamentals like, making sure someone is on the base you are throwing to before you release the ball, but....nope.

Earlier today, the Mariners decided to sit Leblanc and let their bullpen throw the entire game. Hinch  wanted to keep the set off day for Brantley in tact and with the righty-lefty swithing turns nature of bullpen, he decided he to maintain the lineup he already scratched out.

We are better than Seattle in every single phase of the game, including coaching

Through 61 games, he has 26 appearances and 28.1 IP. Through 61 games last year, he had 31 appearances and 29.1 IP.
His usage is fine.

I wouldnt be so fast to compare to the twins usage of him in the first half of last year.
He was on pace to pitch in over half of their games for the entire season when we traded for him

Chirinos' production has been a pleasant surprise, hope he can keep it up.

It's amazing how practically every player the Astros acquire from another club immediately improves. The organization is operating at an elite level right now, enjoy it while it lasts.

Sure, but the point is he’s not on that sort of pace now. 5 fewer appearances already through less than 40% of the season. At this rate, he’ll have 69 appearances at year’s end. That will put him outside the top 30 in the league. He’s not overworked.

ETA: he’s actually appearing in a slightly smaller percentage of games than he did even only in Houston last year to this point (45.6 of Astros games after the trade last year, 42.6 so far this season.)

a few hours late but whatever:

Good win, would really like to see us ease off RP's usage and give him a breather or two, as Putt mentioned, if Brady Rogers in on the team and called up, lets see what he can do. Not going to be shocked if/when Martin gets sent down soon, live arm, but control and pitching efficiency needs work.

Glad AJ called the framberlamps last night, hope he ate first at the post game meal spread.

Law thought the Astros 1st round pick was interesting. We supposedly went off script, by not selecting a Top 100 guy, though the Cal catcher really had a huge Junior season. Says he has a great arm and power, but lacks the ability to catch and has a poor hit tool. Sounds a lot like Robinson Chirinos, except with a plus arm at catcher. Another write up said the kid could maybe play 3rd base ala Todd Zeile.

FG didn't write much, but did note that Lee steadily moved up their board all spring...Law didn't have him in his top-100, but FG had him ranked 45th overall:

Houston Astros
Pick Rank FV FirstName LastName Position Age School Strengths
32 45 40+ Korey Lee C 20.9 Cal power, arm, ath
68 HM 35+ Grae Kessinger SS 21.8 Ole Miss def fit, SEC peripherals
Lee is an athletic catcher with power, unusual speed for his position, and a good arm. He also put up big numbers this spring; we moved him up our board a bit seemingly every few weeks. Kessinger walked more than he struck out in the SEC, he’s a middle infield fit, and he’s an obvious swing change candidate, something Houston is good at implementing.

Other ESPN analyst added this:

32. Houston Astros: Korey Lee, C, Cal

Who is Lee? Surprise! When Andrew Vaughn became the first player from Cal selected in Monday's first round, everyone saw it coming. When Lee's name came off the board 29 picks later, none of us saw it coming. Lee is the first player ranked outside of Keith Law's top 100 to be selected.

Why the Astros took him here: Lee's slash line is certainly attention-grabbing, as he went off to the tune of .338/.419/.626 for the Golden Bears this season; and as a general rule, if the Astros see something in a player, there's probably something there. -- Mullen

Chirinos wasn't thought of highly as a catcher either, but the Astros worked with him on framing. He's not a great thrower anymore (age), but he's still got plenty of power for the position, and Chirinos has a great walk rate as well. Even if his average drops a little, he's likely still going to be a good receiving catcher with a .800+ OPS. If Lee can pair that with his above average arm he should play a long time for the Astros.
