Not bad considering people were calling for his head. No big deal.

I disagree with it from a rule perspective.  I think Jake's play was unfortunate but legal and unintentional.  He even immediately went to check on Lucroy afterward.  However, since half the league is calling for his head, I think a 2 game suspension is a good middle ground that will limit retaliation.  The last thing we want is for pitchers to start throwing at our guys' heads or for opposing baserunners to start trying to take our guys out.

A 2 game suspension is MLB’s way of saying they know it wasn’t intentional but they have to attempt to appease the masses.

It’s basically an extended AS break for him. How many times this season has he gone 2 games without playing? This isn’t new territory for Houston.

I think the suspension is unwarranted but makes no difference to the team. Just use his roster spot for Joe Smith and push Straw’s demotion back a few days.

I could be wrong but I don’t think a team can just plug another player into a suspended players roster spot. Think the team would be a man down the next 2 days.

I forgot we even had Joe Smith.  Suspension is BS to me.  You simply cannot put base runners in the position where they have no option to try an be safe.  He appeared to try and avoid him, and Lucroy seemed to move into him.  I do not think it was intentional on the part of either.  just one of those things.

Definitely appeal.   The two games with no pay and a fine on top of that make a difference to someone at Jake’s end of the pay scale.   If it was just missing games, do it to get it over with, but he doesn’t deserve to lose money in this deal.

Hi34

Every suspension should be appealed except for maybe PED and domestic battery

That's part of why you have a union. Also the suspension doesn't raise from appealing so who cares....try it and may get reduced to 1 game. If not then oh well. 'Merica.

Maybe drop the appeal when a two game stretch comes up where he is unlikely to play.

I think it is normally only like a 2 week process if that....no reason to drop it.

It's not about him not playing. It's about the right to appeal, the fact that he believes he was in the right on the play, the money that is involved, the roster spot it costs the Astros for 2 games etc.

That's almost verbatim what Torre ended up saying:

“After thoroughly reviewing the play from all angles, I have concluded that Jake’s actions warrant discipline. While I do not believe that Jake intended to injure Jonathan, the contact he initiated in his attempt to score violated Official Baseball Rule 6.01(i), which is designed to protect catchers from precisely this type of collision.”

I’m pretty sure the team doesn’t lose a roster spot because of a suspended player.
Pretty sure you are incorrect but someone else can chime in.

League suspension = team takes the hit as well

Team suspension = team can petition league and league can OK player not taking roster spot.

Looking into it further, this appears to be right. PED suspensions are handled differently.

You could technically replace Marisnick if you put him on the 10 day IL, otherwise teams play a man down for the games they are suspended. Since there is also a rule that says you have to have at lest 24 active players on the 25 man rosters, it's why when multiple players get suspended they serve one after the other.

Why would Cleveland do that? They are currently a wild card team.

They wouldn’t.

And why would a team that obviously values team chemistry so highly-it was the missing ingredient that made Astroball really take off-trade for a guy that not only has publicly insinuated the organization cheats, publicly feuded with its players, but would sabotage any hope of resigning Cole?

It makes no sense for either side.

Tyler?

Yes, but what the hell does ARod know?  Was comparing mythical playoff rosters with yanks saying the stros have JV Cole and Bauer, 3 #1s and the Yankees would still be looking for their first

would you swap Tucker for Tyler ?

Yeah CLE has no reason to trade him. An ESPN article the other day listed the Indians as a "Buyer," and had Bauer as a possibility to the Astros in the same article. Made no sense.

Bauer is a free agent after next year.  No way in hell we'd give up Tucker for anybody with that little control left.

If Cleveland trades him it will be because of payroll.  Same reason they tried to trade Kluber or Bauer in the offseason.
