A properly seasoned chopped/hamburger steak is absolutely delicious when accompanied by perfectly grilled onions, brown  gravy and mashed potatoes.

it is by no means crap.

I stopped for lunch at Schobels in Columbus on Thursday, they had CFS on the lunch buffet and it was very good.  $16.95 buffet included drink, dessert, homemade rolls, etc., and it was all good.

The Schobels lunch buffet has been a damned good thing for a damned long time.

I will add that the buffet choices change everyday, so CFS is not always one of the selections.  If you’re planning to travel for lunch, you might want to call first to confirm.  Also, I believe the buffet is just M-F.

You took the words out of my mouth.

Some Katy people at UT told me it was pretty solid. Good pie. But they didn't sell it well. Bad ass CFS and a buffet for 17 bucks would have grabbed my attention.

The 71 bypass around Columbus  was finished my sophomore year at UT so after that I would never detour through old 71 and stop at Schobel’s.  Before the bypass I hit it quite often.

Hickory Hollow in Houston would never be misunderstood as a good restaurant, but I miss their hubcap, or was it wagon wheel (?) CFS. Fried okra, green beans, a couple Lone Stars and you’d get out of there alright for under $25. I polished a few off by myself, but I usually split it with my wife. Not bad for two broke kids trying to make it in the big city.

Ate there today. First time. The small CFS is called the Plowman ($12.75) and the large is the Rancher ($18.50), includes two sides. That with two teas was $39.57 out the door.

CFS was good, but not elite. Which made it spactacular compared to the previous four I've eaten of late. Gravy was kinda meh. It's pounded out fairly thin, but few will walk away hungry after eating the Rancher, and most would likely be satisfied by the medium as well, whatever it's called. The fried okra and mac-n-cheese were good.

It looks like they moved way up north. Off Washington to near the horse track.

I’m glad they bounced back. The bottom shelf Restaurant Depot dishes, and off colored white cream gravy is definitely Hickory Hollow.

I'm like halfway through Lonesome Dove right now and the concept of "Texan hero" gets thrown around but I think a post like this seriously entitles you to that.

Look - we like our eggs a similar way. I'm sure @Deej wouldn't bitch about over easy and vice versa.

If this goes any further I'm hiring an attorney.

I threw some cholula in there and dipped a piece of toast in. Just seemed like a lot of gravy and I already have all my condiment ratios down for the CFS breakfast.
