Wall Street Journal now censoring reader comments to articles

Having read the comments section of articles from time to time, I can say I'm not at all surprised that clast feels at home there.

Yeah this. Reading those things is basically the worst things you could ever read. It’s always so full of worthless drivel that every second you spend reading those things is a second you will regret not having back on your deathbed.

I’ve never read the WSJ comments section so I can’t comment on Icono’s personal experiences in the matter. But at least when it comes to this board compared to the WSJ, 99.999999 percent of the world population doesn’t even know this board exists so that tends to limit the trolldom to certain bad actors here, whereas the WSJ comments section is probably 99.999999 percentage troll from around the globe.

Don’t get me wrong this board has its fair share of trolls, including a decent amount who don’t even live in this country, but its limited and manageable. As important as the shag/surly may be, its really not that important in the grand scheme of things at all to those who want to troll. Although maybe it should be....

He did in fact say that.

Maybe he just meant he wanted to shoot illegals if they drew their firearms, challenged him to a duel, then took 20 paces and turned around and tried to shoot him first? Ever think of that? HMMMM???

They are a private business. They don't have to let you voice your displeasure at all.

Interesting that a business that needs the First Amendment in order to be relevant does not see what they are doing though.

Why? I literally litigate constitutional issues - my very livelihood depends on the first amendment (among other provisions).

Yet, if you walk into our offices cussing and spewing crap, we’ll kick you out.

Because that’s how things work on planet Sane People Who Understand the Difference Between Government Action and Private Rules.

One person's crassness is another person's straight forwardness.

True.

But the only person who matters in that instance is the owner of the forum/venue.

My standard for crassness is purposefully cruel or demeaning language, I don’t give a fuck about profanity. But I know folks whose standard is “any profanity.” When I’m at their house, guess whose standard decides whether I stay or am asked to leave?

They see exactly what they are doing. If someone wants to voice their displeasure, they are free to start their own newspaper.

Really. How do you explain the treatment I have received in the CR at surly. I’m not the only one, all of us on the right have. I have refrained from posting there for Lent. It’s been much better for me as it’s reduced the hatred and vitriol that would arise in my heart from the shit flinging. Take a look at my previous posting history there if you have time. I linked a lot of articles from the NYT and WSJ with my spin on them. No unprovoked personal attacks on my end. I’d get called out with epithets saying I’m a liar or have my addiction which I’m clean for years now thrown in my face. That didn’t happen at the WSJ and I enjoyed laughs from the regulars there. They took that from me and the rest of the crew there.

Zero sympathy for anybody that didn’t want their past to follow them but signed up here with the same username. You’ll never get a better chance of starting clean but you declined.

No one was cursing and getting away with it. The WSJ comments were orders of magnitude better, more civil and more enjoyable to read than the CR. They are silencing viewpoints of those that correctly skewer the hypocrisy of the ruling class, the crisis at the border and the dangers of Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and their coreligionists responsible for the rise of anti-Semitism and other ills in this country.

Why would I? People would have figured out who I was with my posting style. Running away from your past is not part of a healthy recovery. I go to a meeting every Monday night to remember what I am dealing with and not forget that my addiction can kill me

They are pissing off people paying $40 a month. The most expensive periodical in the country. We mostly skew older, upper middle class and right wing. The woke progressive millennial set aren’t going to replace us.

Do you get mocked about something personal to you that has nothing to do with the discussion at hand that you never voluntarily shared to this community? My privacy was violated at the most vulnerable time of my life. You’d never withstand the abuse I have gotten over the years.

This reminds me of the time when I was lectured by all the right-wingers on the old board who defiantly stated it was okay for Trump to incite a crowd to "knock the shit" out of a protester for crashing one of his campaign rallies because it was held in a public space rented by their private party.

The consistent hypocrisy of these pussies knows no bounds even when the poor little pathetic woe-is-me, ever-the-victim, "Iconoclast" wasn't physically assaulted with a punch in the face and the promise of payment toward his online aggressors' legal fees.

SAD!

Look at you blaming vulnerability. Pathetic. I’ve not heard of any recovery programs that encourage dragging your disgusting history from one website to another. You love the attention.

We all have our personal demons and burdens to bear. I doubt you'd handle mine or Brisket's or Twice's or Zepol's or Derka's any better than us. It's funny how you don't ever seem to take that into account unless you, specifically, are the target.

Seriously, think about that some before you start judging downtrodden faceless "Others" who clearly haven't led the unearned privileged life you appear to have had. It might be you'll actually learn some compassion for your fellow man and not voice desire to shoot him and his family for staking claim to a better life.

But that's your choice, Icono. You can still make it.

Yes. Anti-semitism in this country hardly even existed until two Muslim women were elected to Congress (checks notes) 5 month’s ago.

Also, nice use of “other ills.” It’s fantastic. Is there ANYTHING we can’t blame mooslems for? Nope, nothing. Why, this was a PARADISE of a country before the mooslems showed up!*

* “Paradise” designation not applicable if you were black, Mexican, Chinese, or some other group that was actually and regularly lynched.

And you still wonder why people around here rather uniformly think you’re a shitty human being.

The WSJ reader comments were a gold mine with some really funny, intelligent posts and lots of sarcasm by people I identify with - namely highly intelligent, conservative (No CR) professionals..

Yes now digs like Barack HUSSEIN Obama and Alexandria Occasional-Cortex are blocked...

It was a play on Democrats (Dhimmicrats) when referring to one of the new Muslim members of Congress...

This satire is a little too on the nose.

I think, for Icono, it's simply an extension of the old trope about being able to get Poor White Trash to go along with the Segregationists so long as they had Blacks to look down on. Icono, being of an immigrant Persian family, most likely suffered some childhood trauma back in the late 70s when Mickey Mouse flipping-the-bird "Here's to you, Iran!" T-shirts were the rage. That must've sucked.

But, now, he has other immigrant groups to shit on, so that makes him feel better about his own imagined place in the supposed pecking order of "Americaness." What he sadly doesn't realize is his obsession with Muslims and folks from Latin America only serve to feed his own self-loathing thoughts of inadequacy which then further fuel his irrational hatred of them.

Not much more annoying than people who spout off about the first amendment that obviously don’t know a thing about what they’re talking about.

For you youngsters who don't know what I'm talking about with Mickey Mouse flipping the bird stuff, here are some examples:2Q==

I can totally see how that could've all had an adverse effect on a young kid confused about his identity. Ninety-five percent of us would've learned the lessons of compassion and empathy had we been subject to that sort of treatment. Sadly, some folks turn in the opposite direction to shit on others.

Maybe there's still some hope for him.

FYI, the NYTimes has done this for ages. It keeps the discourse, for the most part, civil.

They don't want civil discourse though.  Can't post outrage porn rants all over the comment section if there's no comment section to get riled up over.

I kind of agree with the OP (gasp- no CR though). Print all the comments, whatever, no matter how racist or disgusting or worthless. But, like letters to the editor, your actual name that appears on your drivers license has to be included in the post along with your hometown or zip code. Of course this would need to be verified, so might have to charge a dollar per comment or something to pay for the person doing the verification. Oh well, I'm sure Joe Deplorable won't mind paying a dollar to post his penetrating and shrewd "Killary" satire.

This would also result in a lag time. I guess readers would have to wait a few hours before reading the insightful "Barak HUSSEIN Obummer" posts, but oh well. You can't rush greatness.

Or....

Fuck it, the internet has descended into a medium dominated by trolls, racists, and idiots. I think we, democracy, and the USA will all get by just fine if all news outlets got rid of all comments.
