Davy Crockett and the River Pirates: 1956 - 1h 21m - Historical, Romantic, Family, Action-Adventure: It's a rip-roaring adventure for Davy Crockett - "King of the Wild Frontier" - and his trusty companion George as they share the risks, share a bed, and fight off bandits that are interested in more than their fur pelts.  After a boat captain challenges them to a race down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, the two gather a team to ensure their victory.  A win lands them a free ride upriver, but the adventurers have no idea what's ahead - buggery!

So...what did this mean back then?

Watched episode 1 of the Imagineering Story about the creation of Disneyland.  As a Disney parks veteran I'd heard a lot of those stories many times before but the production quality of the show and archival footage and everything was fantastic.  I love how it highlights some of those original Imagineers and how they contributed their styles and personalities to design of the park and certain attractions.

Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Speaking of cultural depictions - if you have a kid interested in Avatar, click on the "Extras" section, and you can get a "family" version of the movie with an audio track that cuts out the naughty language.

Or better yet disown the kid, and raise the next one to have better taste.

It's well put together propaganda, but I still enjoy it. I laughed out loud at the line that was something like "the rides have been updated to reflect current social attitudes" without going into any of what those changes have been.

Ep 2 was just as good, and Roy got properly recognized. Yes it’s a white washed version of the story, but most autobiographical stuff is. And this is the story of the Disney company as told by the disney company.

The Euro Disney one should be interesting given how big of a failure that park was and somewhat still is.

Our long national nightmare is over.

With the launch of Disney+ this week, many fans were excited to have easy access to all 30 seasons of The Simpsons — only to find to their chagrin that their original 4:3 aspect ratio had been discarded for a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, cropping out many visual gags entirely. But now, Disney says that it will be fixing this in “early 2020” by making an additional version of the first 19 seasons in 4:3, the way they were intended to be viewed.

Quote

Here’s Disney’s statement:

“We presented “The Simpsons” in 16:9 aspect ratio at launch in order to guarantee visual quality and consistency across all 30 seasons. Over time, Disney+ will roll out new features and additional viewing options. As part of this, in early 2020, Disney+ will make the first 19 seasons (and some episodes from Season 20) of “The Simpsons” available in their original 4:3 aspect ratio, giving subscribers a choice of how they prefer to view the popular series

Why 19 seasons, instead of all 30? From 2009 on, partway through The Simpsons’ 20th season, the show had already switched to the 16:9 aspect ratio — so those episodes should be fine already.

One issue is they need to reset the show you've watched when it's fully played through. Wife and I watched the first Mandalorian to the end. We wanted the kids to watch it a few days later. Went in to queue up that episode and it started at the credits scene even though we went to the very end. It did that with other shows we've watched. It needs a start from the beginning option.

Not seeing either of those issues using Xbox One, Roku, or iPhone.

Xbox and Samsung TV are playing flawlessly.

Although I don’t know if it’s like this normally but mine basically treats every show like I’ve never seen it and starts at the beginning every time. Xbox, Samsung tv, both fire sticks and my iPhone.

does this on Android after watching finding nemo/dory for the 6th time this weekend. It feels like the old school rewind VHS to the beginning

Same issue with the Apple TV. I ended up watching multiple spoilers rewinding the Mandalorian to watch it after my family saw it the day before. Hopefully they fix that soon.

Maybe it’s a timing thing but I was bouncing between multiple devices yesterday and the show always picked up where I left off. It would be nice if there was a “Continue Watching” list like there is for Netflix, it’s kind of a pain to have to search for what I was watching each time.

Set up your own profile so you won’t be judged watching Amy on repeat.

haha, they have their own profiles.  I think maybe it's a bug or lacking a software update, because unlike Netflix or Hulu, it's not obvious when you look at a show whether you've watched an episode or not.

Okay, they put a lot of bucks into Lady and the Tramp.  I didn't watch the whole thing, actually maybe paid attention for 5-10 minutes, but my daughter watched it, and so I caught bits and pieces of it, but the production value kind of surprised me for a non-theatrical release.

My girlfriend is very into Disney so we watched it the day she signed up for this service. I really enjoyed it.

The updated “cultural representation” in this one cracked me up.  The “we are Siamese” cats were changed to interior designer cats.

Okay, something has changed in the past few days - now when the kids go into a series they have already watched, it will let them resume, and it's displayed prominently on the series page.

Odd that they didn't catch a lot of these UI issues before now.

The Imagineering Story is so awesome.  It's interesting how it starts out with 60s and 70s footage that has been converted to crystal clear hi-def from film and now that the story has moved to the 80s when everything was filmed on video tape it looks like absolute dog shit.

Yeah I was about to make a 70s cinematic porn to 80s VHS porn reference.

Or a Star Trek TV series reference.  Some of them were salvageable and look sharp, others they are almost giving up on.
