2019 NBA Offseason Thread -- Trades, Free Agents, Firings, Retirements, Etc

The NBA is now as close to a 10 month season as any sport as the playoffs with a spectacularly stupid and drawn out schedule lingers in June followed by the draft and then a kickass free agency period which dominates the 4th of July period and gets us through most of July until Spring football and the NFL's preseason period.  This year's offseason should be intriguing as any with huge free agents expected to be available like Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker, and of course, KD.  There is the NBA lottery.  Who wins the ping pong balls and the rights to Zion?  There is the trade market where a top 5-6 player in Anthony Davis is expected to be traded.  Who else will be moved unexpectedly?  CJ McCollum?  Kevin Love?  Lonzo Ball?  Jayson Tatum?

Summer League also generates some excitement as well.

We have the playoffs for the next 8 weeks (really?), but the offseason has begun for half the league already....

This came out last week and is under reported.  The NBA salary cap velocity has slowed down again.

And the thread's first update....

Teague's staying as a TWolf!  Or he can be traded now.

Luke a leading candidate for the Kings' gig.

I like Luke, but probably best to bring in a new Pres of Basketball Ops to hire his own guy.  Pelinka and Jeanie better not be the ones making the call on a coach.

And oh the irony.  Griffin now controls the fate of AD.

First thing I thought of..... With Zubac traded and Ingram's value diminished, if he did that deal right out of the chute, he'd be crushed.

So did Magic quit before he was fired?   This fall on the sword narrative seems like bullshit now.

I don't think he was under any real pressure for his job.  If he would have struck out this summer on a FA and the Lakers missed the playoffs again then he may have been, but he had already said he'd resign.

Lakers talkin to Monty.

who is the best value FA? Meaning in the range of $3m-$7mil a year and had a big impact on the floor?  It's Javale Magee! Damn Houston needs some height, please get rid of Shumpert's inflated paycheck and sign this brotha.

List of free agents to this point this summer (there may be more dependent on opt-ins and cuts).

Green and Rivers are playing so well for HOU because it's their contract year. On the flip, Capela got paid and fat, isn't getting it done.  Houston needs to re-sign Rivers, House, Faried and Green + dump shump + sign a competent big in the 6-9+ area. Also hope KD leaves.

Unless they trade someone, the Rockets are capped out and therefore only have their exceptions (Taxpayer MLE, Room, maybe Bi-annual).  Because of this, it would be almost impossible to do what you propose as none of those free agents with the exception of Green does Houston own their Bird rights.  They can sign them, but probably would have to eat portions of their exceptions.  Morey's a wizard with the cap so perhaps they can offload Eric Gordon.

oooh, do not want to unload Gordon.  So, the doomsday scenario is they lose any of their fresh legs and get nothing from the FA market? They'd better offload the fucking $11mi that shitpert is getting. If Dantoni insists on keeping that guy, fire Dantoni.

Shumpert is an expiring deal that was traded in order to get rid of Brandon Knights contract, which we got for Ryan Anderson. So we went from 2 years 42m in Ryno, to 2 years 33m in Knight, to 1 year 11m in Shumpert. Morey basically dropped 20m off next year's cap by doing that sequence of trades, and it only really cost a 1st and 2nd round pick.

They sent Ennis to Philly, because they didn't require any return salary, so it was a dump for a swap of 2nds. The goal was to get under the tax this year, so that the tax next year isn't as painful.

And..... Lakers.  Yep.  Maybe Magic wasn't the issue, as lame as his exit was, Pelinka not exactly inspiring confidence.  Not the biggest issue as no one is going to confuse Lue with Red Auerbach but they just struck out with their top two targets so better hit on this hire.

Sheesh..... not wonder why Lue moved on.  Smh.  Apparently Kurt Rambis is a big influence on the search..... because he's been so successful as a coach.  Right....

“Determined he isn’t the right fit” = wouldn’t agree to our bullshit demands. Who the hell is impressed by Jason Kidd? Buncha dumbfucks in charge of the Lakers and I love it. GIVE ME MORE!

Nick Wright tweeting "source" claims Kurt and Linda Rambis convinced the rest of the Lakers FO/ownership to hold off on offering Lue until today's debacle.

While I'm skeptical about Nick Wright's sources, I wouldn't be surprised.  Maybe they need to have James Worthy be the GM if Rambis doesn't (and he won't) work out.

I mean how do you look yourself in the mirror when TY FUCKING LUE walks away from the Lakers???

If you are lue, how do you look yourself in the mirror after turning down that offer. I assumed it was pretty much established that the only reason he was even a head coach was because of LeBron, the only reason he is a "chpionship coach" is because of LeBron, and he was fired a week or two after the season started (because LeBron wasn't there).  Then you get another shot at a head coaching gig probably 100% because LeBron asked for it, meanwhile your name has not been attached to any other jobs.  And he turned  it down.  It's possible lue is never a NBA head coach again.

Conversely, what idiot would agree to being forced to take on a coach on his staff that 1) Interviewed for the same head coaching job, 2) The Lakers obviously really like, and 3) Has head coaching experience.

"Hey Ty, we'd like you to bring in and work with your very likely replacement."

Maybe from my perspective as a non millionaire, I'd say sure for $18 million.  Also if he had any confidence in his coaching ability he wouldn't have any problem working with another good coach.  (Whether Kidd is a good coach is debateable)

LAL regrouped with an offer in the range of 3 years, $18 million today. Lue’s side pulled out of negotiations. Lue’s camp seeking 5 year deal with salary commensurate with championship resume[/QUOTE]

Commensurate?  Does he think he derserves popovich money?(11 mil) doc rivers (10 mil) ?

6 million a year is more like rick Carlisle, Steve kerr type money.  Spolestra doesn't even make that much.

The $10M he is owed by the Cavs still that would be offset would be one reason to walk away from $18M and the Lakers.
