Yeah.. But the warriors just had a first 4 that was better than any first 4 in the league (maybe even 5 if you count cousins).  KD gets injured and they're on life support.  Klay goes down and they are done.  You can't have quin cook be your back up plan if you want to win.  With Davis and his injury history you have to have more talent than just him and lebron.  Lebron didn't exactly take the lakers far this year and they are going to have less assets than they did in 2018-19.

You guys are hilarious.     The draft and FA are still yet to come.   You cannot say that.

Snell is an interesting bench specialist.  Shot about 40% from 3 the last 3 years, but with almost 24 million (PO) the next 2 years owed, I wonder how easy that'll be?  May have to attach another asset.  Ilyasova at 7 million on an expiring is an easy contract to move.

When he fell completely out of the rotation late in the season I knew they would be trying to dump him this summer.    Gonna be tough.  Shit if they can manage to get a 2nd out of him that would one helluva win

Not just Laker hate.    Laker AND LBJ hate.    That's some pretty powerful stuff.    It's wild how deep it seems to go here.

Why is it "wild how deep" the hate for the Lakers and LeBron on Surly go here???

I imagine you're talking about Snell and they may have to attach a 2nd to get rid of him.  Get someone on an expiring and then move Ilyasova.

Yep, Snell fell out of the rotation.  I was just being hopeful that someone may think they can use him and give a 2nd for him.   MIL will probably ultimately have to give up a 1st to get rid of that deal.

Ilyasova was still getting minutes in the playoffs.   I thought they might wanna hold on to him but he clearly is too expensive for that even at 7M.

Hate is one thing.  Irrational hate (which most of these statements seem to be) is another

Golden State is (was?) a unique team in NBA history. You're not supposed to be able to lose your best player and still compete at a high level and win playoff series. The '94 Bulls being a game away from the ECF without MJ are the only other team that I can remember being able to say that. If LeBron or AD goes down at the wrong time, they aren't winning the title anyway, so why prepare for that? They'll be able to find role players that at least allow them to tread water in the regular season should one go down for a couple of weeks or so.

As far as injuries go, any team is going to eat shit if they lose their top player, or likely lose without their #2.  That's just the nature of the beast.  You construct the team assuming they can play, and if they get injured, such is life.  You have to try.  And the Lakers are.

The Warriors just went to their 5th straight finals, the first team to do that since the Celtics in the 60s. Only an absurd rash of injuries to not only KD and Thompson, but also to Looney and a much lesser extent Iguodala prevented them from winning 4 out of 5 and three in a row. What the fuck do you want from them? Should they have Damian Lillard backing up Steph Curry?

1999 Knicks made the finals sans Patrick Ewing for the entire playoffs.

I wonder if we'll see Steph Curry have an 'unscheduled' operation late this summer or early in the season next year so they can possibly tank their way into the top 6-10 picks for the next season.

David Robinson's injury opened the door for the Spurs to get Tim Duncan...

D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, and Brook Lopez were scrubs in LA, then they got new teams and suddenly they are no longer trash. Interesting how there's more to it than just the names on the roster.

also lebron missed like 1/3 of the season. furthermore, the players they just traded away are all 20 and 21 year olds. adding those guys to Zion (18 years old), the number 4 (another guy who will likely be 21 or younger), plus NO's other picks, plus Jrue Holliday, PLUS they are no longer in that awful organization that seems to have no idea what to do with young talent, and the two situations are not even close.

No idea, but I've read/heard Philly wants him back and Brooklyn will look at him if/when they strike out on KD.  Redick actually lives in Brooklyn and commutes to Philly.

Why? 2 hour commute to practice and games in the northeast sounds like hell

Maybe he has to...

Seriously, no idea.  Haven't dived in that far.  I do know he's an EC kid.

Agreed.  It’s been stated already, but the reason that Nets-Celtics trade was so disastrous wasn’t because first round picks in a vacuum are so insanely valuable.  It’s because the Nets received geriatrics at the end of their usefulness in return.   What did those picks turn into?  Something like Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Collin Sexton (traded as part of Kyrie deal)?   If you received an All-NBA player in his prime for that package, nobody would blink an eye.   If you give them away for broken down 38 year olds on max contracts,  then of course it’s a bad deal.

It’s not just about how good AD is, because the Pelicans only had control of him for one year. When you consider the only thing the Pelicans had to offer was one year of control of AD, they got a ton back for that.

And you have no idea whether the Lakers’ picks in 2023, 2024, or 2025 will be extremely valuable or not. Those are very high ceiling assets considering Lebron likely won’t be playing by the and Lakers’ ownership is one of the worst in the league.

Now the Lakers/Lebron/Rich Paul backed themselves into this by trying to force the trade at the deadline last year, so it’s their fault they were desperate to give up that much, but it’s still pretty crazy. If Lebron stayed healthy last year, didn’t try to force the AD trade, and they made the playoffs, would LA have been this desperate?

Its interesting that a few weeks ago Ball was useless, Ingram was an injury risk and the #4 wasn't valuable in a 3 player draft.   Now all of the sudden the Pels made out like bandits!!

It's pretty impressive that New Orleans did even better than the "take everyone except LeBron" offer that LA made at the trade deadline, despite Boston not making a serious offer, and the #1 overall pick landing in NO, rather than with someone who would potentially trade for AD.

But the Lakers got the player that they absolutely had to get, AND kept Kuzma.

New Orleans used their desperation to get a pretty substantial haul of future assets with protections in NO's favor, even if you aren't particularly high on Ball and Ingram (I'm not). Not bad to get from a team essentially bidding against themselves.

I don't know that I'd call it a win-win given the details that LA overlooked that would have netter them more cap room. But both franchises have every right to be excited.

He must have one helluva promise from Ainge to opt out of 30M this yr.   I'm sure he will get good money but not enough to make up for that this yr.

Why? He can sign a long term deal for way more total money this year. He's 33 and coming off a productive season. Opting out is just the way to maximize his career earnings.

Yeah, I could definitely be wrong.  I guess he could get 3yr/60M from someone which would kind of make up for it.    He is a very solid player I just don't see many teams lining up huge money to give him.   There would be risk but for 30M it seems like he would pick that up and then go for a multi-yr deal next summer.

3 yrs/$80 or thereabouts, and if it implodes, help him get to a contending team for a shot at a ring.

Horford loves playing in Boston, and has said he wanted to return.

That would qualify as a "helluva promise"     I like Horford and that would bring his cap number down a bit but that seems like a tough deal for BOS long term.

Horford's finances are not the only thing at play. He is likely also opting out to save them cap space and help them contend. Not every player in the league is out to try and "maximize" their career earnings.

if the 3/80 rumor is true its not bringing his number down enough to make a difference.   It would be to get more money on the books.

Every dollar counts - and if it's back-loaded it could be the difference between 6 million or so this season. Something like 24/27/30.

They are currently paying 9 players $120MM. Say Kyrie opts out. They are at about $100MM. Horford being paid $24 this year instead of $30 could be huge and potentially be a saving grace to keep them below the tax threshold.

Or they could front-load it and try and save money for 2021 after Hayward almost assuredly costs them 32 next season with his player option.

I would say those picks are going to be highly valuable as Davis in his prime still lead the Pelicans to 2 playoff appearances when he was the lead star on the team. I can imagine how  bad the Lakers are going to be with 30 year old Davis missing at least 20% of his team games leading them into the lottery. Of course, the Lakers could still fuck this up by failing to resign him after this season.

Anyone who thinks LA won that trade is fucking delusional. If they aren't a top 4 team this season and don't win a title with LeBron/AD at somepoint it has a decent chance at being one of the worst trades in NBA history.

LeBron isn't getting any younger. He's 34. You saw what just happened to Durant. LA is a season-ending LeBron or AD injury away from being completely irrelevant again and having zero practical assets to try and rebuild.

So him saving them 6M in lux tax while gaining 50M more in guaranteed money would be him helping them contend not about maximizing his earnings?

It isn't black and white like that. He can reasonably maximize his earnings and help the team contend at the same time.

6 million is a lot when you are talking about filling out the roster - and they need to resign about 5 players if spotrac is right. Also, every dollar above the tax line is $1.50 not $1.00.

If Kyrie goes then letting Al go may make some sense for cap space but I think they're sincerely interested in bringing him back for this reason.  They may be active in trade market but Boston is in a tough spot right now.  Perhaps the meeting with Kyrie later this week will clear things up.

It's not so much that.  Although the team gets some cap help, Al getting more guaranteed money at age 33 is the thing here.

Tomorrow isn't promised to anyone.  Al could have a torn Achilles this season, and no one would offer him even close to what he could be getting today.

Now, if Al were 28, then sure...it's a questionable move on his part.  But he's not, and this probably will be his last big payday as a professional.
