Former Cowboy Great Passes on to the Next Plane

Wow, sad news.  Remember him as the coach who revived SMU football after the death penalty.  SMU later got revenge on UH for running up the score.

How did I not know he was a Cowboy?

Oh, that's right - only the 71 season, appeared in 6 games, 0 starts    see the link

Good guy though.  Condolences to his family.

I was a little fuzzy on that too.  Had to edit my original post and then look it up.

exactly.  he babysat the corpse.  he revived nothing.

Futureman, don't ever change.

He took a program that had been gone for two years and recruited players.  Pretty much everyone on the team was a freshman.  They won their second game:

We played them in their third game back.  IIRC the score was 14-7 at the half (everyone who bitches about our highs and lows since Mack took over please remember this).  I'm fuzzy here but I think Ownby was what was eventually rebuilt into Gerald Ford Stadium; a lot of aluminum bleachers for that game.

Gregg maintained all of his previous schedule agreements, including the game at #1 Notre Dame, where I think one of their running backs ran out of bounds in order not to score.  Lou Holtz didn't want to look like a dick like Pardee (HC) and Jenkins (OC) at UH.

I wouldn’t call that reviving a program.  he chaperoned a scrimmage squad to go around the country getting destroyed.

He was one of those rare guys who you'll never find anyone who doesn't like him.

Born and raised in Sulphur Springs, IIRC.

Gregg was a big ugly as DKR referred to offensive linemen. He was an ironman-playing in 188 straight games, nearly unheard of today.  Hornung and Taylor were able to run the Lombardi sweep that he was a part of in the Packer heydays.  Lombardi benefitted from having a leader like Gregg set the example of toughness that had been lacking in previous years when Green Bay was an afterthought in the NFL. The fact that he returned to his alma mater, SMU, which everyone knew was a sinkhole when they went on probation, speaks to his loyalty and integrity.  Saddened by his death and glad to have grown up watching him play.

I was at that Texas game in Ownby. The thing I remember most is on the opening kickoff, one of their guys punch Stan Thomas (?) in the groin and got ejected.

Stan was not gruntled.
