He’s approved better than Abbott, though. Folks I know all say the same thing- for all of his public awfulness Dan Patrick is generally curious and professional to people across the spectrum of state politics, actually cares about a functioning government, and his staff works to keep the gears turning, even in the realm of social services and things outside the interest of GOP base voters.
According to them, Greg Abbott is uninterested in anything that doesn’t have political impact on Greg Abbott.

Get out of here with that bullshit. Potty Patrick changes the rules on the veto proof majority in the senate nearly every 2 years so he can pass bills without democrat input. He also completely ignores anything that would be a boon to the state like legal marijuana and casinos. He also nearly lost in 2018, while Abbott cruised or wheeled to victory.

Counterpoint: we had a relatively functional state government, under either dem or GOP leadership, until the senate repealed the 2/3 rule so it could start passing some blatantly partisan GQP bullshit. Talk to anyone in state govt, and they’ll tell you that’s when it started going downhill. And those people…they’re exhausted and demoralized by what our govt has become. And I’m not just talking about Dems - I’m including people who have been lifelong GOP types.

It all goes back to Patrick leading the charge to break the system for stupid partisan bullshit like bathroom bills and whatnot.

100% true. I’m just saying between the two of them I would take Patrick and it’s not close. And that’s not praise of Patrick so much as an indictment of Abbott.

I hope this guy chokes on something. Fuck him. He’s never done anything good or meaningful during his tenure as lieutenant governor.

Without the bolded, I’m afraid you’re going to have to be more specific.

Coasted. The judges would have also accepted coasted.

While on the toilet because we all know he sits down when he pees.

Every grown man has sat to pee at some point in his adult life.  No shame in it.  What’s weird about Dan though is, he does it with his legs crossed.

Wut?

Guess who is funding a large portion of it?

It was created largely due to blowback from some conservative parents/donors having concerns over perceptions of stifled free speech, revisionist history, et. al.  The idea was floated in conjunction with some elements left behind on campus by Gilligan and Streeter (Hoover & AEI, respectively).  Now called the Salem Center at McCombs.  It became well-funded and well-received, so now it's going campus-wide.  Three regents were also instrumental in its growth.  It's going to be massive by the time their vision is complete.  It's a C&I entity, not a degree granting program, FYI.

I'll be the first to admit, some of their Hayek market initiatives and speakers and exchange of ideas is appealing to me.  Which also means that in about 20 minutes, it'll turn to abortion and border security because they can't help themselves.  Y'all can say it's stupid and ignorant and all that shit, but a free exchange of economic and financial principles at a business school is fucking critical to any student experience.  But yeah, they'll fuck it up by veering into critical race theory or some shit.  Which will, sadly, earn them more funding.

Apparently, UT thinks it’s an idea whose time has come.

I suppose setting something up at Tech was just a trial balloon for trying to make inroads at some place like UT, which provides a bit more legitimacy to the whole "think tank" thing.  Congrats to them, I guess ...

From what I’ve read, the think tank was searching for a home for quite some and wasn’t finding many takers. Tech was more than happy to give this conservative group of scholars a base from which to promote themselves and their work.
I’ve seen these people lecturing on C-SPAN. Disturbing.

Since Stidvent left LBJ/McCombs Center for Politics & Governance, it tilted further right.  Streeter took it up a notch then left for AEI.  I like the new guy who rebranded it, Cavalho.  Then this happened well over a year ago while nobody noticed.

https://newideal.aynrand.org/new-objectivity-program-and-fellowship-at-ut-austin/

Which is fine, I have heavy libertarian leanings but we don't need a publicly funded entity for it.  It's now reached its tipping point in this incarnation.  I think balance is key and it's mostly privately funded.  Good news is it may bring an intellectual flavor back to a conservative movement taken over by the very dipshits taking credit for this.  Then again, probably not.

There's a massive fucking Regent element to this that we should not discuss online lest somebody like Cranberg rears his fucking head up again.

I'm with you. I would be thrilled if this was another AEI. But we both know it won't. I seriously give it 3 months before some resident fellow of the institute shits all over themselves by defending phrenology or promoting HCQ for the flu or something.

Oh, you mean literally shit themselves?   From horse paste.

"If you're one of us...you'll take a bite."

Did you get the position?

No.  But I'm the only one from the table who didn't get violently ill.

But if he then sits down for an interview with Isaac Chotiner and shrieks "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM!?" at him, it might be worth it.
