They are actually the 49ers. Dirtbags is an unofficial nickname for their baseball team.

Long Island U. is the Sharks.

Long Beach Baseball has Dirtbags on their uniforms across the front.  It's official.

A few quick notes from OB baseball guy:

A few notes to pass along on the baseball front as we hit the end of a fascinating week on the 40 Acres.I think for War Room, we state some things known.

1. Texas head baseball coach David Pierce has not been officially let go by the university, but there is a sense from the sources that we've talked to that it is only a matter of time before it happens.

2. Sources believe that Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte CDC is running a one-man search for a replacement and and is quickly narrowing in on his guy.

3. Brian O’Connor (Virginia) will not be the next coach, as he signed a 7 year extension today. Likewise, Tennessee's Tony Vitello is not expected to be the guy. Based on information from sources, there is no reason to believe that Jim Schlossnagle will be the next head coach.

Huh... I thought there was a change from '49ers to Sharks a few years back.

Is Long Beach State not the same school as Cal State Long Beach? I only remembered because Augie coached Cal State Fullerton prior to finishing at Texas. They (Long Beach) used to make it to the regionals, but not lately.

The other one - that's Lawn Guy Land, right? The one that was just in the baseball regionals? They're also Sharks?

Bakich or O'Sullivan? I'm certain the Virginia coach was never an option to begin with.

Just a random thought but how good is OB's baseball guy? Is he the typical OB moron?

He's been solid in the past. I certainly think he's the most plugged-in of any of the 9.95 sites (not a super high bar, but still), although I think Blake Munroe has some good sources too.

Wow, that OB Jabba-minion will have Kunt-Bowels/Chip-Brown-levels of egg-on-face when it's Vitello anyway.  Lulz.

A man can only take so much.  If this drags on much longer, we approach the real possibility that @Balcones drives down to your shitty cookie cutter neighborhood to fuck your fat wife and eat your Wendy’s nuggets just to break you.

I don’t do Cedar Park or Avery Ranch. I might fuck his hog wife but that’s it.

this is about a week old but I feel like Bakich is the best option based on this opinion

* The waiting game continues to see what Athletic Director Chris Del Conte will do with regard to the head coaching position at Texas. Officially, there is no opening at this time, as David Pierce remains the head coach. Behind the scenes though, there have been multiple conversations that have occurred to gauge interest, find out what it would take, etc.

At this time, all sources continue to advise that a change will be made. While most expected it to happen immediately once the Horns were eliminated from the season, that is not modus operandi for CDC. The revealing of the new golf coach is a great example of that. In addition, CDC has spent quite a bit of time this week in Oklahoma City as the Horns softball team looks to bring home a national title. Silence is golden and CDC has not come out and said, no, this is our guy.

I tend to believe that there will be much more movement after this weekend.

* Getting into the list of names, here are the names that have been floated and a few quick notes on each.

Jim Schlossnagle (Texas A&M) - could this one still happen? Sure, anything is possible, but based on what sources have said today, it feels like a bridge too far.

Jay Johnson (LSU) - Most will scoff at this based on his recent national title and the school he is at, but there is mutual interest. The biggest hindrance to Johnson is his pay and the amount of money it will take to pry him away from Marucci, I mean LSU.

Tony Vitello (Tennessee) - Maserati Tony was never really under consideration. CDC and Tony know each other from their days at TCU and as mentioned before, there is a personality conflict there. Reports are surfacing today that Tony is about to sign a sizable extension and you can close the book on this one becoming reality.

Brian O'Connor (Virginia) - Elite defense and pitching. On the surface, not the sexiest name, but once you look at how he runs his programs and the success he has had, you start to love what he could bring. I haven't yet had anyone say, he is out. I also haven't had anyone say that there is a huge mutual interest.

Erik Bakich (Clemson) - Young, energetic, develops, and knows how to get the most out of a program. Bakich in my opinion would be a slam dunk hire. Texas would be getting one of the premier young head coaches in the nation. His salary also makes this a very attractive option.

Skip Johnson (Oklahoma) - There are certainly boosters that would like to see it happen, I just don't get the feeling talking to folks around Texas that he would be considered.

Rob Vaughn (Alabama) - A true dark horse in the race, he has only been at Bama for a year, but he was mighty impressive at Maryland and is highly regarded in the baseball circles. If this was 3-5 years down the line, he probably gets a look, but unfortunately, probably not in contention at this juncture.

Wonder if Clemson are telling Bakich he won’t have to change schools to coach in the SEC. Hope we make them double his salary at least

The Vitello wishcasting was always just that. He was going to change schools just to see some more cool pictures in the hallways of his facilities? The guy has it made already

It’s going to look shitty when we wasted the first few weeks of the portal to land a Wes Johnson, Rob Vaughn, or Canham type, but all are certainly upgrades.

This is an interesting lead in as they were worse on the pitching front than we were this year.  Looks like half a run per game worse.  And they had a very Pierce-like super regional opponent in middling Big 12 team.

Let’s not forget that it could be none of the names mentioned or it could be one who is said not to be a candidate.  I trust CDC to pick someone who will get the job done.

Major meltdown on here if that/when it happens....😂

1. Pure speculation, I couldve written that

2. It is a "one man search", and he is "narrowing in on his guy"... if it is one dude, he either has em or he doesnt.

3. Captain obvious level shit.

So much for an inside scoop.

The "one man search" refers to CDC, not his target(s). It means he's running the search himself.

Pierce is done.  The only one that doesn’t realize it is Balcones.  He was done when he assigned himself the pitching coach.  Kind of like when Herman was done as soon as Sam was the only one on the field for The Eyes.  Tomorrow or the next 2 weeks will be interesting.

Officially they are Beach athletics or just the Beach.  As in "Beach volleyball" or "Beach basketball".  The 49ers is not official, just a nod to the school opening in 1949.

That's a change, then. They used to be the 49ers.

Zach from OB posted this yesterday:

"UPDATE (6/13):

There will not be an official announcement today from Texas regarding the status of David Pierce due to contractual matters, but it has been made clear and the next step will be an official announcement from CDC (Texas) that Coach Pierce has been fired.

As far as who will be the next coach, that name has not been released, but they have narrowed it down to an individual and he has stated that when the official offer is made, which can only be done once Pierce is officially removed, he will say yes."

Anyone know what the contractual matter might be?

I'll assume buyout obligation and negotiation.

We're firing a coach who has been to Omaha and/or won a conference title in nearly 40% of his seasons?

We're firing a coach whose program trajectory is not that of the standard that is Texas baseball. Be thankful for his appearances but also realize that the program isn't trending up after 8 years.

Not as good as being a fired football coach, but not bad for not working.

It’s a not insignificant amount for a sport that barely makes money in a good year. Ole Miss would have owed Bianco close to $7 million this year to fire him and it’s a big reason they brought him back. If that was a football or basketball buyout they probably don’t think twice.

No idea on specifics but with that OB update, I’m wondering if Texas is maybe trying to get Pierce’s side to agree to a lower amount because of all the off-field shit that was dealt with. I don’t think they can fire him for cause but maybe they are threatening that to get him to take a deal.
