Plus how much more would that $221M have been considering the income taxes in California versus none in Texas.

No, I was confused because the Marcus Morris news hadn't come out yet. Looks like Morris will be getting the MLE.

The Carroll signing and Morris trade is basically PATFO trying to shore up our defensive wings by sacrificing a little shooting.  Pop will feel much better with throwing out Morris (solid defensive stretch 4) to having Davis out there.  Same with Carroll in bench minutes.  I have also read that they were trying to challenge Lonnie into embracing being a defensive stopper, which would be sort of dumb, but it's part of the Spurs fabric.  They probably just don't want him to become a defensive liability.

I could see the lineups like this:

Small ball lineup, let's call it Lineup A:

Starters -- Murray, White, DeRozan, Morris, LMA

Bench -- Patty, Lonnie, Rudy, Carroll, Jakob

Situational guys -- Forbes and Marco.

Lineup B (Big ball):

Starters:  Murray, DeRozan, Gay, LMA, Jakob

Bench:  Patty, White, Lonnie, Morris, and Carroll.  (Have to stagger some minutes with LMA and Jakob).

Probably be a ton of different combos you can do but with Murray coming back, Lonnie getting more time and the addition of Carroll and Morris, we should be more stout on the wings.

Thx for admitting your mistake. (Your original response just didn't make sense.)

Knew going from 2yr to 3yrs on Carroll deal had to mean another Spurs roster change for this season using the MLE (Morris).

Morris can leave Spurs after a year but Bertans was also eligible to leave Spurs as a UFA next summer.

Good article...

"The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have acquired forward DeMarre Carroll from the Brooklyn Nets. In the three-team deal, San Antonio sends forward Davis Bertans to Washington and the draft rights to Nemanja Dangubic to Brooklyn, while the Wizards send the draft rights to Aaron White to the Nets."

I'm optimistic about next year. Championship? Probably not. But, I'm liking the moves they've made and really looking forward to how they play together, especially with Murray being healthy and another year of experience for the younger guys.

I don’t have anything against him.  Good story, hard worker but where do you see his minutes coming from?  Remember he’s a bit limited defensively.

Bryn Forbes is one of those overrated homegrown guys. He isn't good at all. He isn't good with us and he certainly wont be good when some stupid team overpays him next year. What's Kyle Anderson up to these days anyway?

Love the Morris signing. We are not going to suck next year. We're going to be salty as fuck. We aren't going to hang banners but even the top tier teams will be praying they don't draw us in the playoffs.

If Patty continues to decline Bryn would be a better option, imo. His play improved considerably last year.

Interesting Take.... but Spurs could have received more for Kawhi.
kg0wFYlS_bigger.jpg John Diaz.  @byJohnDiaz   So the Spurs traded George Hill for what has evolved into DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, DeMarre Carroll and Keldon Johnson

And an NBA Championship and another Finals appearance.

Clippers may take awhile to gel.  Lakers will probably wear down late in the year.  GS hurt by no KD and limited time with Klay.

Seems like Spurs have their best chance in quite awhile to make a big playoff run during this 2019-2020 season.  After that, it's time to rebuild.

It's kinda the same deal they did with Gay and it's worked well for both sides so far.

I don't like it that they had to add the third year considering how old Carroll is but apparently you can't sign and trade for less than three years. I imagine it's fully guaranteed. In this day and age, a $7 million contract isn't that much to eat if he becomes dead weight on the roster.

All in all, they made some really solid moves to finish the team while addressing their biggest holes and not killing their future cap. They are going to have one of the deepest benches in the league. I like the blend between some rugged vets and some young guys feeling their way. They aren't championship contenders but they should be fun to watch.

You mean Morris' deal is like Rudy's?  Yes, the structure is, but the big difference was Rudy was coming off of Achilles surgery and basically his first year was a recovery year.  He also opted out but came back twice.  If anyone thinks we have an organizational issue around treating injuries because of Kawhi, I would hope how we helped Rudy and respected his recovery won us some points back.  Agree with our roster.  Very deep with good solid players, just no upper tier guys anymore.  Pop will enjoy coaching this team a little more than yesterday.  I would imagine if we make the playoffs, we'll be a tough out.  I also hope Pop understands that developing guys like Lonnie and the rookies has to get done.

Despite a pretty awful first impression, Keldon is growing on me the more and more I watch. Lots of hustle, seems to have an innate sense of where to be on defense, and can get to the rim in transition or when the play breaks down. He's really rough around the edges but he's a scrapper. They may have found something with him.

I'm liking the addition of Marcus Morris more and more by the day. When I think about it Bertans was likely playing his last year for the Spurs and he was a sieve on defense along with possessing no offensive ability besides 3 point shooting. With all the money being thrown around in Free Agency to mediocre players in recent years there was no way Bertans wouldn't opt out of his final year and cash in elsewhere following the 2019-2020 season. Ultimately the Spurs got a lot tougher with the addition of Morris and unloaded a 3 point specialist who wasn't strong enough to play in the paint and couldn't defend to save his life. The Spurs have a deep team and the front court has been strengthened with the additions of Morris and Carroll.

I looked at that pic of DeMarre and was going to post, "When did Malik Rose grow a beard?"

Then I googled up some old pics of Malik and realized how bad my memory has gotten.

Probably just some latent racism from my time occupying the Deep South.  Better rub a little Robitussen on it.

Anybody thinking Westbrook even has one/one billionth possibility of being a Spur under Greg Popovich needs a little refresher...

  Quote

On Friday, reporters asked Gregg Popovich what kinds of qualities the Spurs look for in players (and staff), and his response was long, enlightening, and, oddly, inspiring ( via ESPN's Baxter Holmes😞 "For us, it's easy. We're looking for character, but what the hell does that mean? We're looking for people — and I've said it many times — [who] have gotten over themselves, and you can tell that pretty quickly. You can talk to somebody for four or five minutes, and you can tell if it's about them, or if they understand that they're just a piece of the puzzle. So we look for that. A sense of humor is a huge thing with us. You've got to be able to laugh. You've got to be able to take a dig, give a dig — that sort of thing. And [you have to] feel comfortable in your own skin that you don't have all the answers. [We want] people who are participatory. The guys in the film room can tell me what they think of how we played last night if they want to. [Former Assistant GM] Sean Marks would sit in on our coaches' meetings when we're arguing about how to play the pick-and-roll or who we're going to play or who we're going to sit.

"We need people who can handle information and not take it personally because in most of these organizations, there's a big divide. All of the sudden, the wall goes up between management and coaching and everybody is ready to blame back and forth and that's the rule rather than the exception. It just happens. But that's about people. It's about finding people who have all of those qualities. So, we do our best to look for that and when somebody comes, they figure it out pretty quick."

He looked like the best player on the floor. Apparently the Raptors' summer league team is pretty terrible, but this is 2 games in a row for Lonnie. He just glides past everyone out there. Still got caught in the air with no plan 2 or 3 times last night, but usually finds a way to finish. And his shot was ON.

I hadn't had a chance to watch the Summer Spurs yet, was surprised that Drew Eubanks was the 2nd best player on the floor last night. He looks quick and springy and nimble at the rim. Also made some dumb passes/turnovers though.

Walker has looked like the best player on the floor in every game he's played in so far. Considering how little playing time he actually got as a rookie, his progress is pretty damn impressive. With his quickness and hops, that pull-up is brutal to guard. If he can make people take him seriously at the three point line, then he will be completely filthy. They are going to have to find minutes for him.

Quinndary Weatherspoon has been surprisingly really good too. I'm glad they have him on a two way deal. That's like getting a free roster spot and he might be the most NBA ready player out of the three rookies, which I suppose isn't too surprising since he's 3-4 years older than the other two. He plays with a certain amount of toughness.
