My mom had Alzheimers for more than 10 years before she passed. For the majority of those years she was unable to communicate with us in any way. After she passed, I was going through her stuff and found a Big Chief tablet that she had used daily for the first few months of her affliction. This was before any of us knew that she was struggling.  She would print the date and then she would sign her name 10 times. Each page was worse and worse and then she just stopped. That was a gut punch. She knew she was fucked and never told any of us that she needed help.

Man that shit must have been horrible. My dad had Alzheimer’s, but mercifully the time span between when it became a true disability and when it finally shut his organs down was surprisingly brief. Sounds horrible to say, but anyone who’s dealt with it knows what I mean….

My MIL had a stroke and so my wife has flown to help get her rehab started and the house set up for when she can hopefully be home again. But of course we started the conversation of “what if she can’t live alone again.”

I am just barely a man according to Mike Gundy but shit I do not feel old enough to have parents with serious health issues and to be thinking about elder independence.

Traded my diverticulitis for c diff colitis a couple days ago. Trying to hit for the itis cycle I guess. Apparently the fuckton of antibiotics I was on for the diverticulitis trashed my good gut bacteria and left me open to this.

Let me tell you, you have not lived until you’ve flown commercial with explosive diarrhea. That was a day.

Asked a buddy for a viagra this weekend. Seeing as it was my 10 year wedding anniversary on the 22nd, I thought it might help me rattle the sugar walls. I don't even have a need for any ED meds. But I've heard a lot of guys who don't need it say it makes them feel like they can go longer. So I figured what could it hurt? I'm tryin to blow the back out like I used to back 16 years ago, when we first met. If anything, I was hoping it'd help me shoot ropes like I used to. No ropes were slung. More like if you were trying to eat soup after taking a mouthful of novocaine. Just kinda dribbled all over the place.

After 15 months of feeling perfectly fine, I had my second bout of Diverticulitis 10 days ago.  That resolved very quickly, but I was still having horrible nausea and heartburn.

Diverticulitis seems fine now, but I got scoped today and found out I have an Esophageal Ulcer.

2021 has been nothing but sitting around, eating poorly, and drinking brown liquor.  Time to pay the piper, I guess.

Fuck.

Would drinking silver tequila instead have prevented the issues? Asking for a friend

Do dumbass injuries go here? This isn't exactly age-related, but I imagine I would have shaken it off quicker a few years ago.

Had friends over to watch WS Game 3 on Friday night. After everyone left for the evening, wife and finished cleaning up and getting ready to call it a night. Last thing I needed to do before hopping in bed was head downstairs and turn on the alarm and grab some bottles of water. Stupidly, I ran down the slick, wooden staircase with socks on, completely lost my footing about 2 steps in, slammed ribcage first into the stairs and rode 'em down all the way to the landing. Knocked the wind out of me and I ended up spending the rest of a gorgeous weekend sitting on the couch with an ice-pack, gulping down OTC meds and grunting in pain each time I had to stand up or sit back down. I almost cried during a brief coughing spell last night. Finally felt good enough to get out of the house today, but it's gonna be at least a week or two before I think about doing any type of exercise beyond maybe walking on a treadmill. Lifting anything over 10 lbs. is on hold until further notice.

Prolly not. As a confirmed alkie who's had 10" of his colon removed after a few decades of abuse I can tell you that dehydration can lead to diverticulitis flaring up. It may not be a root cause but it sure as shit don't help none either.

Stay thirsty my friends.

You probably broke 2 ribs.  Ask me how I know.

Better yet, ask @Sawbonz.  Obviously you'll need some radiology to confirm, but everything you described sounds like the 2x I broke some (4 one time, 2 another).  Do NOT watch any kind of movie that is hilariously funny.  Again, ask me how I know.

Slipped in the rain this morning, jammed my shoulder badly. The same shoulder that was screwed together back in 2007. X-ray revealed no break, MRI later today.

Probably rotator cuff. FML.

Pain is through the roof. And of course the junkies mean that the docs are very skimpy on pain meds. I’m seriously considering finding a street dealer.

Yeah, that sounds like cracked ribs or at the least cartilage between ribs being torn.

Ugh.  Did this in 2017.  Last day of school (1/2 day) before Xmas vacation.  I had been coughing for a month or so.  Had a coughing fit so bad, something popped in my rib cage.  I knew it wasn't a rib, but wasn't sure what else it could be.  My mother (little bit of a medical background) worried that it could be a blood clot.  Went to the ER.  It was torn rib cartilage.  I'm not sure what they put me on while I was there, but I felt like I was floating.  I still get some pain/soreness at times from that little episode.

Going to the doc Monday.  Might have psoriatic arthritis ... at least according to my nurse practitioner friend.

Lots of joint pain and fatigue.  One eye gets occasionally bloodshot.  Rash on leg for a year.  Now it's on my face.  Jacked up SI joint on the lower left side of my back.  I move like I'm 90 years-old at times.

A couple years ago I got up awkwardly and tried to push up off the arm of my computer chair which promptly swiveled and sent me ribs first into a little square footstool. Didn't go to the doctor but my ribs felt like a sack of loose lego for a while.

Man I’ve lived in a multi-story house with wooden stairs most of my married adult life (I’m 55). I used to move down those motherfuckers like I was running the 100m hurdles; now, ESPECIALLY when I have socks on I hug the rail like a fucking 4 year old headed to the deep end of the pool for the first time…

I slid down my old wood stairs once. I do not go on them with flip flops on (my primary footwear in AZ) or certainly not socks. New house has carpet stairs. Still, barefoot only on the stairs and hold the goddamn rail.

Total knee replacement coming up on my left knee a week from Monday.  All that running for decades I guess.  The nurse navigator told me she would have a walker waiting for me at the recovery area.   I guess I’ll be the one legged man in an ass kicking contest for a while.
So you're telling me you want new tennis balls for the walker this Christmas? For real, good luck man, joint replacement always suck. Give PT hell that's where the gains are made.

Another high PSA, so it's off my 3rd MRI and 5th prostate biopsy in 6 years. I ended up in the hospital with a serious infection after one of them. And last time I had a biopsy they stuck me 34 times. I'm really surprised I have anything left. And I have to load up on Valium to even walk into a room with an MRI.

Jammed my shoulder in a fall a week and a half ago (mentioned above). The open MRI they gave me was horrific with my claustrophobia. I was able to do it the second day with 4 ambien pills that a doctor friend prescribed.
edit:  Xanax, not ambien. 4 ambien I guess I’d still be sleeping. Thanks, @Crapinon

Yeah. When I tore my rotator cuff they tried to get me in a regular MRI machine. When I said hell no, they used an open MRI. I still could barely make it and the 20 year old female tech had to come out and hold my hand to make sure I didn't leave. Xanax is a miracle pill.

I do a lot of hiking and take pride in myself for being in good shape for my age.  I have come to the conclusion that the Aesop fable, "The Hare and the Tortoise", is a bit of a lie.  Just this past week I spent 2-1/2 days of hiking in The Joshua Tree National Park. Some of the trails I hiked I was alone with my just my thoughts whereas there were a few that were quite popular and thus there were many others on the trail.  Being a fairly competitive person I would prefer to pass people than them pass me.  I can always make good time except when I am going down steep grades and it is particularly worse when there are steps/rocks to navigate.  My right knee does not have the structural integrity anymore to do a deep bend required to lower myself so I am always having to stagger or shuffle my steps so that my right foot is the lead foot to step down. This leads to having to take many more steps and more time. That, and I get passed.

I developed claustrophobia/anxiety about MRI/CT after a pretty bad wreck in '09. It has thankfully subsided but for several years there even valium wasn't working to calm the nerves. Good luck. I had a good sized section of the ol' colon removed in 2017. Long recovery, wound wouldn't cooperate, but much better since and zero diverticulitis.

+1 on the MRI claustrophobia.  My doc prescribed me just a single Valium for the process and I still had to fight to get through about 30 minutes in that tube last week.

Fast forward to today.  I’m getting the good ole colonoscopy tomorrow, so I go in to Walgreens to get the bowel prep solution to his morning.  As I’m leaving, the pharmacy tech says “have a great day!”   Motherfucker, does it look like I’m about to have a “great” day?

Did my colonoscopy last month.  The new prep is so much better than the old stuff.  It doesn't taste that bad and what's the problem with sitting on the toilet all day surfing surly.  Sounds like most days to me.

Yeah one wouldn't cut it for me either. I had to take 3 in a 15 hour period for it to work for a 25 minute procedure. But I did made it through. If I had to have one done on my head/neck they would have to knock me out.
