Surprisingly effective is getting exercise. I haven't been like I need to. I keep thinking about the other advantages and forgetting this.

Almost 49 and if I don’t exercise hard at least 4 days a week i’m teetering on madness. I also need to indulge my hobbies. I also work from home and I’ll do all sorts of daily tricks - I walk the yard and check on plants and pull weeds for a 15 min break, I’ll get sun light and for sure I will get my strenuous work outs in too. Religiously eat well for breakfast. It feels restrictive but the alternative is an unmitigated disaster. I still have “is this all there is?” and “holy shit I might have only 20 great years left, FML!!” syndromes. I’m not sure when my midlife will hit, I hope to god the stunts I’ve pulled and upgrading my wife situation was it but I don’t think it was.

With the real shit some of you have going on I hate to even mention it, but a couple of weeks ago felt like I had a bad stone bruise on my left heal that wouldn’t go away and it got continually worse. Freakin Planter Fasciitis. Been using an ice regimen and doing some foot stretches, bought an orthotic but damnit that shits annoyingly and surprisingly painful! Every freaking step! Doctor was no help to speak of, is this a permanent thing?

You might try resting your foot on a golf ball and rolling on it for as long as you can stand. Hurts like hell but stretches the tendon out and eventual relief after a few days.

Probably a quarter of this thread is about that hideous condition. I’m almost out of the woods, 14-16 months later. 3rd time through it. Custom orthotics, foam rollers, stretch bands, ice foot baths, frozen water bottle roller, hot baths, old fashion stretching, and lots of exercises later…

I am not sure where to put this?  Either here are in "Trivial Things That Make You Surly".

I went to Hobby Lobby this past Saturday looking for some bookends.  I looked in what I thought would be a logical location for them but did not find any.  I found two young employees and asked them if they had any bookends.  Neither one of them knew what bookends were.  I found myself describing to them what bookends were and what they typically look like.  You would have thought that I was describing quantum physics to them.  Does anyone read or keep books anymore?

Upthread I mentioned some calf stretches for Achilles's tendentious - same stretches should help reduce PF pain.

Your first mistake was not finding Scott Baio(aka Chachi) and ask him.  /nocr

The back page of New Mexico magazine (from NM tourism department) is always “one of our 50 is missing,” and every month there’s a story of someone being asked for a passport to travel to, or from, NM, or similar nonsense.

Google   alfredson protocol for achilles tendonitis

The exercise protocol has had a bunch of controlled science studies that validates it works.   In a nutshell it involves doing an exercise that stretch the calf and achilles tendon under load (eccentric heel drops).

I trashed my achilles tendon in a Half Ironman and after a surgeon couldn't help and a PT was clueless, I stumbled on this on the web. (It had only been published a few years earlier, so it wasn't all over the web like today).  It worked.

Got some shitty news today. The Decatur CBOC has a history of losing good people. I'm sure it aggravating as hell dealing with them (VA management) on a daily basis.  My Doc is leaving VA. Said he was tied of their BS. Seems a team of PA are reviewing MD orders and rejecting them for nonsense reasons. He told me of a patient with a ruptured ear drum that needed drainage tube. He put in 5 orders only to be shot down by the PAs because the patient didn't have a hearing test. The eardrum was ruptured, what did they expect the test to reveal? He apologized to me but said he'd had enough. Too bad really, he was the first VA Doc I actually liked. The man wore boots in the office. On the bright side, he renewed all my scripts and put in for imaging on my left shoulder.

My biggest fear is losing my mind or experiencing significant changes in behavior.  I recently was on a flight with one of my law partners of 25+ years.  He is around 75 (still practicing law) and has been a great guy and a joy to be around.  It was a 737 with the usual 3 seats on either side of the isle.  He was a few rows behind me in a window seat.  The plane was completely full.  I was in a middle seat on the exit row across the isle from him.  When we arrived at the gate most of the isle passengers got up to start gathering their things, as usual.  I kept my seat until it was my turn to get up and quickly get my stuff together.  My law partner, from his window seat, as soon as the seat belt sign went off asked the guy next to him in the middle seat to let him get out so he could get his bag from the overhead bin right above his row.  The middle seat guy seemed like a decent guy and he did what I would have done by telling my law partner to chill out that everybody has to get their stuff from the overhead bin and we're not going anywhere fast.  My law partner basically insisted that he needed to get his luggage out of the overhead bin and just crawled his way over the guy in the middle seat, and somehow forced his way into the already crowded isle where he stood while the rows in front of him slowly exited the plane.  It was very difficult to watch.  Ten years ago I can't image he would have done such a thing.  I don't think he had a clue that he was being an asshole.  Getting old sucks.

This sounds a lot like what happened to me 2 weeks ago. I took a short trip to the Chicago area. The final leg was on a small regional plane. I was exhausted and not looking forward to the meetings I had the next day.

As we started to land, I had a panic attack. I have very bad claustrophobia, and it’s getting worse as I age (mid-50s).  I can’t sit in the middle or window. I have to take another flight if I can’t get an aisle seat.  I had an aisle seat on this plane, but it was one of the small regional UA jets.

As we landed, I had complete, overwhelming panic, anticipating that 10 minutes when we land, everyone stands up, and everyone is trapped in place until the plane clears. It was horrific. I am getting chills just typing this.

I did deep breathing exercises and closed my eyes until it was over. I got through it, but it was awful.

My dad had claustrophobia like this. It was awful for him. The older I get, the more I’m like him, in so many ways, including this. It’s irrational, it makes no sense, and I hate it. I hate it with every fiber of my being.

He died of Alzheimer’s 2 years ago after a long, slow decline. His dad died of Alzheimer’s. His brother has it now. That certainly concerns me, and my wife and adult kids.

Years ago, I was getting on a small regional carrier and had a panic attack while boarding. It was only a 30 minute flight so I was going to tough it out, but the longer it took to take off, the worse it got. Right before we were supposed to leave, they announced that there were problems with the plane and we were going to have to disembark for another plane. When I got on the next plane, I had no problems whatsoever. I think this was going to happen.sFxUhHvC8B8EMsTbDt2Pz-QezJdhUzeisf_qcxzyfyA.webp.fabab71d220ef73d274bfb3ee2b45227.webp .

I think that’s correct.  Man, he really needed to get his bag quickly just to weight in the isle (double downing on “isle” and staying consistent with “weight”).

This is core to any plantar fasciitis recovery. There are other things to do that help alleviate pain but this is the fundamental exercise and many other exercises indirectly aid this one. Thanks for sharing I didn’t know the background.

ps mine is finally better. Just in time for lower back pain, hip pain and general tightness around my left side. Need to lose some weight. 😕

We keep some of our bulky inventory in a conex. The only problem we have is when it's full and the item you need is in the back. I needed to get a box from the back yesterday but didn't feel like moving 4 pallets to get to it. So I decided I'd just jump on top of the pallets and crawl over them. The top of the pallet was about chest high. Wrong. I couldn't even get my waist to that level. Broken down shoulders with no strength anymore sucks.

Early 50's have been rough. Been running casually for years nothing serious, just enjoyable, typically doing Houston half marathon each year, did my 2nd full marathon in 2022... that summer had my first cancer scare, after a couple surgies for removal and reconstruction... was just mentally out of it for about year and didn't do much other than walking dogs, mowing lawn etc.  Got back to lifting and running in March but for life of me couldn't get my running going again. Couldn't jog at almost walking pace for more than a minute or two... knew something was up, went to cardiologist to have checked out.  Came back abnormal on treadmill test. Now I'm on beta blocker, statin and low dose aspirin and they are hoping to get me in for a coronary angiogram asap.  Guess all those carbs and red meat years ago catching up to me now.  As bonus.. I've got appt with my dermatologist as wife spotted another "suspect" mole that needs checking out first time putting on lotion to enjoy the pool.....

I'm 64 and have always been engaged in some type of sports.  Spent a lot of years running on sidewalks.  First it was my knees.  I lost about 25 lbs and the knees are OK now, not great but not terrible.  Lately sitting at my desk or any chair other than recliner has killed my back.  Playing golf or pickleball (yes I do that now) doesn't seem to aggravate it but sitting just kills me.  Went to the doctor last week and got some muscle relaxers and some weak ass pain medicine.  Advil worked just as good.  Went back to the doctor yesterday and got a shot of cortisone and lidocaine.  I felt better when I went to the doctor and a little better when I left.  Played about 2 hours of pickleball, slept fine.  Came to work and sat down at the computer and fuck there it is again.  I listen to a golf podcast called Chasing Scratch and they have been discussing one guys back/hip issues and damn if it doesn't sound just like mine.  Maybe the hip and not the back.  Oh well Rant over, let me go shake my fist at the sky.

Check the golf thread in hobbies.  There's some exercise a dude was discussing that really helped.  I was considering looking into it, but I'm too lazy to link the thread.

The older I get the more work it requires to feel good.   Through my 40s, feeling good was the default condition.  I'd have to do stupid shit like binge drink, or skip sleep for days to feel like crap.

Now in my late 50s, I can go from feeling good one day to feeling like I'm on death's doorstep the next day just by minor behavior differences.

The order of things that instantly make me feel 20 years older a day later:

  1. Not getting enough sleep
  2. Drinking more than 1 drink
  3. Skipping daily exercise
  4. Overeating or just eating too much junk food.

I guess I should be grateful that there still is a path to feeling good, but life was so much more forgiving when I was young.  I got 4 hours sleep last night and my knees and lower legs hurt and I feel like a frail old man. Fuck me, and fuck YouTube Shorts.

So much this right here. 2-3 drinks still doesn’t bother me much. But sleeping, exercise, and eating like shit, holy fuck am I a pussy now when it comes to missing those.

Last night I pulled my calf muscle for the second time this pickle ball season. I was backpedaling and felt like someone hit me in the middle of the muscle with a cattle prod. Hobbling around like a gimp today. Advice on rehab welcome.
