Getting old sucks

Hate

Recommended Posts

i was convinced my metabolism took a dive the day i hit 30, which it only did slightly, but when i hit the mike gundy it became precipitous. some days i could skip dinner just snacking on a few things.

the other strange thing is i suddenly became sensitive to caffeine.  used to drink loads of the stuff for the taste, never in my life knew it was like to feel a 'caffeine buzz'.  now i could take a single nespresso (very mild 6g of ground coffee) and feel perceivably wired.  also i tried a zyn the other day and had to sit down for a while lmao.

This thread mostly deals with the physical ailments of getting old. But there are some interesting non-physical health related aspects of getting old.

There are mental related aspects of getting old and also huge learnings from getting old. From 50-60, my entire perspective of the world has changed pretty significantly.

I wish younger me could have tapped into the “right” older person’s brains more to hear their views on various topics. The challenge, of course, is that some people are as dumb or dumber when they are 60 as they were when they were younger. The key is tapping into the brains of the right people on the right topics. I wonder whether there would be interest in a “thoughts from old guys/gals” thread. Probably not. Anyone under 50 thinks they have it all figured out.

I just climbed a ladder about 20ft to install a new camera on the edge of the roof, then climbed on the roof to install the solar panel. Getting on/off that ladder at the top raised a concern I was not used to.

I hate that concern.

I remember the first time that happened to me.  When I finished and got down off the ladder,  all I could think of for days was "oh shit, what the fuck was that about"?

I used to crawl way out on the edge of the roof to clean the gutters. Two story drop to concrete, never a worry.

Then one day The Fear came. Now I clean that gutter using a long-ass pole while climbing a ladder where if I fall, 6' drop to wooden deck.

Probably equally dangerous, but The Fear doesn't reach me there.

I am too hard-headed and cheap to hire some young dudes. Guess I might wanna get over that.

I don’t really think this is old man stuff, buts never happened before.

I was play basketball with my son and jumped way up for a rebound. (I’ve been working on my vertical)

I come down and roll my right ankle all the way over.

I climb around on houses and buildings for a living, so this is bad for business.

Your feet look like they drank out of the wrong grail.

Y'all just keep this up. I'm not bummed enough already, sitting here thinking how much better those feet look than mine. No inch-thick toenails, no purple toes... I mean, I'd pay a pretty penny to find a pedicurist who doesn't run screaming out of the room when my socks come off.

Agree - hire out that high up work.

When my old man listened to me talking a out borrowing the neighbor’s extension ladder to patch a piece of siding up at our very high roof line: “how much are you worth to your family alive? How much do you bill by the hour? You dumbass, pay someone to do that dangerous shit.” The old man can bring the wisdom sometimes.

I don’t work on anything I can’t reach with a six foot folding ladder now.

okay i learned this one isnt my fault.  apparently a zyn has the same nicotine of ~10x cigarettes.

zyns come in 11mg or 6mg size. a typical cigarette has ~10mg of nicotine, but only 1-2mg are actually absorbed through smoking. zyns you absorb the whole thing.

so big zyn = 5-->10 cig equivalent.

We're getting a new love seat delivered, so yesterday I moved the old one out, stripped the metal from it to sell with some other scrap metal that I have, and took the rest to the dump.  My back is making me grumpy today.  I ain't 19 any more, for sure.

Put it out on the curb like everyone else.

I can't do any kind of home maintenance or projects with out my hands looking like I have been in a fight. Skin is paper thin. I should wear gloves but....

Also, I'm turning into Clarence Beeks. I say "fucking weirdos" at least 4-5 times a week. I'll stay away from gorilla costumes.
