Dude, get the ablation scheduled already!

I have SVT and was on medication for a few years to control it. Over time the meds became less effective so I finally gave into having an ablation done. I was a bit apprehensive but am glad that I finally had it done. It has been almost two years since I had the procedure and have not had any issues.

I was semi alert during the procedure as I could feel them artificially changing my heart rate. During the procedure I developed a horrible itch and kept trying to scratch it. They told me to stop but the irritation was too great so they ended up restraining my hands.

Post procedure you have to lay on your back for about 4 to 6 hours. After that you are pretty much back to normal. After about 3 weeks I was back to playing full court basketball.

I was in and out of the airport several times in December, at some point, hoisting my backpack onto my shoulder, I wrenched my left shoulder and it's killing me for the last month.  Last weekend, while drying my feet after getting out of the shower, something in my left hip let go, and now that's killing me.  My right knee will eventually get replaced but for now it's killing me.  My left knee that did get replaced feels great.  Getting old sucks, what should I do differently?

Not sure where to post this, but my father in law died today. His three daughters and ailing wife were by his side. He fell a few weeks ago and hurt his hip, and it proved too much to recover from.

He was a good man, a good father, a marine, a full Colonel, and served his country on the battle field in Vietnam. He rose the ranks to officer during that war. He never told his family of what he had to do to come home alive. He spent his career all over the world, with home base at Pendleton or the pentagon. I was told he demanded he be allowed to fly back from somewhere overseas to see one of his daughters graduate. He later was discharged honorably so I assume his persuasive skills worked.

He testified at the Ollie North trials, and retired to a last post for the marines as the commander of the Texas A&M corps of cadets. Yes he was an Aggie and that was his retirement dream job, and he got it. He was a good one.

When his daughter came out to him in the early 80’s he spent one day thinking about it. He talked to some colleagues in the marines no less, came home and told the family, she’s our daughter, she’s gay, this is who she is, we love her and so we accept her, and like a good marine officer he said, “and that’s the end of it, I don’t want to hear another word.” This was at a time when gay folk were as feared and hated as my people now. His response cemented his legacy as an amazing father for her.

later in life, as the time for him was coming to an end, he was a favorite of the memory care and assisted living staff. He was sweet, funny and had many admirers among the staff. During his last days, a half dozen of them came to say goodbye, and when the funeral home took him out of the facility - draped with a US flag - the care givers lined the hallways to say goodbye.

to me the measure of a good man (would apply to a good woman too), is the impact you have on those closest too you. From his kids to those who cared for him at the end of his life, it’s apparent he made an impression and left a mark.

He loved, and he was loved.

he will have a military burial in a few weeks, and when that is done my wife and I will head to the coast to enjoy his motorhome, hang a picture of him and his wife and celebrate the life of a man who made a difference.
