The actual footage of those poor saps shoveling up the radioactive graphite from the roof and then all the birth defects.

The declaration of "radiophobia" for others suffering from the health consequences of fallout. Talk about gaslighting.

An estimated 200,000 eventual deaths.

Not even close to that number by most experts.  They really can’t agree on any number more than the less than 100 that died from the explosion and immediate aftermath. From the wiki:

Fewer than 100 deaths directly attributed to the accident. Varying estimates of increased mortality over subsequent decades (see Deaths due to the disaster)

Take it up with the documentary I was quoting from.

Just watching that part. I like how they said they selected 5,000 "volunteers" to shovel. They picked the "Strongest, healthiest" same kind they are sending into Ukraine today.

What a crazy coda to the Chernobyl story

https://www.kyivpost.com/post/31734

We knew it was probably the case when it was happening, but the Kyiv post put out a story on how the ivans occupying Ukraine simply were never told about Chernobyl. So they happily dug in trenches into the toxic ground, and cooked over campfires burning radioactive wood. And they marauded through all the houses and buildings and looted a ton of incredibly radioactive souvenirs

“They stole some decorative deer antlers from an (abandoned) Police Department building. They had been hanging on the wall there since 1986 and they were so irradiated it was just a disaster. Probably it was a gift to some general. So someone (member of the Russian occupation force) hung it over his bed….the Geiger Counter goes off the scale,” Galushehnko said, in comments reported by the LB.UA news platform.

All because the truth was again kept from their people

“You can also remember how the illiterate orcs [derogatory term for Russian soldiers] dug in the Chornobyl zone (in the radioactive Red Forest - ed.). I know this place, you can stay there for a few minutes. As it happens, we (Ukrainian nuclear scientists) have received information through our professional channels,” Menzul said. “None of the Russian soldiers who were there survived.

This was one of the best mini series I've seen. Chilling ambiance, great acting, and insane tension throughout. My buddies and I still talk about it.

And yet, those Russian dipshits ran right into it on Putin's orders. At least the miners died with honor.

Just finished this last night - absolute masterpiece. As previously mentioned periodically throughout the thread, the way the scientist and the bureaucrat each evolve as people was really well-done, just as the similarities and contrasts of how Soviet policy got them into the problem in the first place, and the community-over-all aspect of communism (and/or the threat of punishment) helped solve the problem, or at least keep it from getting worse.

Highly recommended, and this thread should be periodically bumped for the benefit of other latecomers.
