Be in town for a bachelor party starting tomorrow. 830 dinner at Arnauds Saturday night. Best place a quick walk from there to watch the game beforehand?

Corner Oyster House next to jackson sqaure is a max 10 min walk to Arnauds - They have plenty of TV's at the bar and always have the games on.

I know it's not fancy and it's not "gulf coast" or anything, but I'm still a sucker for a Port of Call burger and baked potato.

That shit and one of those red drinks that tastes like a hurricane will cure your hangover right quick.

speaking of burgers does anyone know why Yo-Mama's closed?  I had so many of the peanut butter bacon burgers there trashed at 2am.

Pop's Po-Boys  or Olde Tyme Grocery in Laffy

Olde Tyme is fucking awesome. You order a fried shrimp poboy and they bread and fry that shrimp right then and there.

Also the Bon Temps Grill crawfish etoufee pot pie in Lafayette. Solid choice.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just got back from a quick weekend trip. We did:

  • Willa Jean (breakfast) - unfortunately we got there right as they stopped serving. Just grabbed some pastries to go. They were fine but nothing special.
  • Felix's (lunch) - excellent. short line but moved very fast
  • Compere Lapin (dinner) - all the food was solid but not life-changing. Service was atrocious for some reason. A- for the food, D- for the service. I was disappointed given the hype.
  • Willie Mae's (lunch) - fucking delicious. Maybe best fried chicken I've ever had? Waited forever (probably about an hour outside and at least another hour inside) but the weather was nice, we were with good friends, and had nowhere else to be.

Another question.  Has anyone done Friday lunch at Galatoire's?  We wouldn't be in town early enough to get in line but if so anyone have experience with the 2nd lunch sitting 1:30 or so?

1:30 will get you seated eventually, though a little earlier would be better and you could hang out upstairs or next door. It isn’t really a second sitting so much as it is when the first wave begins to saunter down to Absinthe Bar. For the first sitting, locals often use line sitters. You can sometimes call and get a contact from the maitre d’.

Yeah, actually already made the trip.  I showed up around 1:00 right after checking in and they estimated I wouldn't get in until after 3 based on the list at that point so we passed.  Here is brief trip report:

Luke:  Ended up doing lunch here instead and damn good.  Of course it helped it was first meal of trip and we were starving but had raw oysters, their baked oysters stuffed with crab, crab dip, shrimp and grits and gumbo + a bottle of champagne to start trip off.   All very solid.  I've seen disappointing reviews in this thread before but I've had 2 really solid lunches here.

GW Fins:  Really good although late reservation and we had been boozing for quite a bit by then so less memorable.  Tempura fins were the highlight.  I honestly can't even remember what fish dish I got but it was good.  Want to come back here for an earlier reservation when I hadn't been pounding sazeracs in carousel bar for 2 hours before.

Atchafalaya:  Phenomenal brunch once again.  Fried Green Tomatoes, Chicken and Biscuits and Huevos Rancheros.  All damn good.

Dragos:  Chargrilled Oyster afternoon snack. Delicious as always.

Mannings:  A really solid setup to watch afternoon games with tons of TV's but they needed more bartenders.  Only had like 3 serving a lot of people.  After 1 drink decided to uber it to Frenchman instead.

Maison:  Red Beans and Rice afternoon snack.  Second time I've had it here and it's like crack (at least while listening to live music when you have been boozing all day).

Compere Lapin:  Our only disappointing experience.  Started off fine with good drinks and really good Shrimp appetizer that came out fast.   But we then waited about an hour for our main dishes after finishing the app.  Clearly an issue with the kitchen and our server just avoided us rather than address it head on resulting in empty drinks as well.  I finally tracked her down for drinks and she somewhat apologized and brought out another small app.  Mains were fine, but probably rated lowest of our meals and certainly not good enough to overcome the long ass wait.  The handful of times I've experienced something like that before in an upscale place, the server/manager went over the top to make it right but it was just blown off here.  Nina Compton wasn't there that night but they definitely lost restaurant wars.  Won't be on my list next trip.

Just saw this after I posted.  Were you at Compere Lapin Sat night?  Guess it wasn't just us.

Friday. Reading your post, our experience was pretty similar to yours. Our server was grumpy, unhelpful, and clearly didn't know shit about wine when we asked for a rec. Our first four small plates all came out at the same time. Then we waited forever for our main courses. In our case, the manager was apologetic and comped us two desserts without us saying anything to him. Still, very disappointing for a restaurant of its caliber and reputation. Wish we'd tried Peche or Atchafalaya instead.

Tempura Fin Wings are one of my favorite things in New Orleans.  I could make myself sick on those and I'm not usually one to get stuck on one dish in a town that has so many options but those things are awesome.

What's the best late night meal I can get there?

We're flying in on the 23rd and don't arrive until 10:30 or so, so it'll be 11:30 min before we get to our hotel and be ready to head out.

We're staying at the Blake Hotel in the CBD, so not that far from the Quarter.

At this hour, drinks are on par with food quality in terms of importance.

This is our 3rd trip there.  We've been in the Quarter the last 2 times so it'll be interesting to explore a little different part of the city.  Never been to the CBD so recs there would also be appreciated.

I will include food porn in a post after I'm back...

OR real porn if you'd like that better.

Man I fucking love this town. Down here with ten guys including my dad to go fishing but the conditions have gone to shit. There’s worse places to have to kill a day or two.

Hit Liuzza’s At The Track yesterday for lunch. Awesome hole in the wall with killer po boys.

After that killed some time at Finn McCool’s. Great neighborhood pub in Mid-City about two miles from the quarter. Headed back there shortly for Arsenal. Definitely the best soccer pub around. Might stick around for a Bama vs LSU.

Hit up Felix’s in the FQ for chargrilled oysters for dinner. Service was off and they knew it. Manager comped us half the bill and some beers.

Then we spent the rest of the evening drinking and working the heavy metal jukebox at The Dungeon. Several bachelorette parties passed through so we shot the shit with them and the lovely bartenders.

Hit the casino late and walked up $43 at bubble craps.

Looking forward to another beautiful day in NOLA. Maybe Frenchman tonight.

Is the Dungeon still a fratty version of its former self?  It used to be awesome, but changed ownership a few years back and was not the same.

I don’t know what you mean by that but we had a good time.

After Cafe Beignet for breakfast we went back Finn’s for some soccer. My team lost so wandered up to Mandina’s had some kickass turtle soup with sherry and a solid half and half po boy.

Watched the LSU Bama game at Mahony’s on Iberville. Go for the drinks, skip the food. I asked about the cars and was told “The owner has too much money and likes to wave his dick around.”

Wrapped up on Frenchman. So funky. It’s everything I want out of NOLA nightlife. Spotted Cat, Maison, Cafe Negril.

Agreed. A strong roster there.

Finn McCool’s is great. My childhood best friend is a NOLA-born Honduran (NOLA was their main port of entry for a long time), and he still has a lot of family there. And he’s a huge soccer fan. So their family tradition is to all gather in NOLA for the first week of the World Cup every year, and Finn McCool’s is their place. The Honduran crew ends up being friends for the week with Egyptians, Germans, whoever. They cheer for each other’s teams, then eat and drink well. Great bar, great town.

Staying by the convention center this week.  Only have one night free, and even though I've had Cochon and Peche both before nothing else in that region of the city is jumping off this page.  Anything else close that you'd recommend or should I stick with one of those?

Also, any bar rec's around there?

Peche is among my favorites anywhere.

If you've not tried Compere Lapin, I'd recommend it as well.  I know several people upthread said their experiences weren't great recently, but we wrapped up our trip last Sunday there and we thought it was still great.

Flying in tomorrow afternoon.

Right now we have reservations for:

Brunch at Brennan's
Dinner at Irene's
Dinner at Domenica
Brunch at Willa Jean
Dinner at Saba

I think we may go to Parkway tomorrow night and will hit up Drago's at some point for oysters.  I think this should be our best food trip yet.

Getting in to NOLA Saturday late evening...

We have reservations for brunch Sunday at Willa Jeans (never been, but want) and dinner Monday at Commander's Palace (had the tasting menu last time and it was good enough to warrant another trip).

We're staying through Wednesday afternoon, so I'd like to get one more reservation for Tuesday...then play all the other meals by ear.  Any recs for Tuesday (lunch or dinner)?

Definitely trying Ruby Slipper for one of our breakfasts (we did Stanley's last time and it was awesome).  BTW, are all the Ruby Slippers the same quality?  We'd probably try the closest one to us in the CBD.

Atchafalaya Brunch is so damn good (best meal each of my last 2 trips) I would love to try it for lunch or dinner sometime.  Maybe check it out.

Ruby Slipper / Canal Street may still be closed due to the Hard Rock collapse.  Not sure if they got the all clear yet or not.

The one of Magazine tends to have less wait than the one on Decatur - but both may have extended waits if Canal is still closed and they are picking up the slack.

I think we may do that.  We made reservations at GW Fins tonight to fill in another open spot.

Well, based on a number of recs from on here, I added GW Fins as our Tuesday reservation.  I'm planning on the Tempura Fin Wings as one of our meals.  What else should we look at trying?  NOTE:  The GF is not an oyster fan (her loss), but I am...
