This guy is an Austin legend. Before he was murdered he willed his guitar to to Townes Van Zandt. Towns later, in an interview, stated that he and some other friends dug up the body of Blaze Foley to retrieve a pawn ticket. The ticket was in the shirt pocket he was wearing when he was buried so that Townes could get the guitar out of pawn. Van Zandt played the guitar regularly.

He has been covered by Willie, Merle Haggard, Townes van Zandt, John Prine, The Avett Brothers, and Lyle Lovette John Prine said that he wished he could have stayed up all night writing "Clay Pigeons".  He had a short volatile career that took place mostly in and around Austin in the later 70's and most of the 80's. He was banned from performing in most Austin venues due to constant inebriation. He couch surfed, lived in dumpsters, cars, and occasionally would sleep on the venue floors after a show.

I am really surprised that nobody here listens to him.

Around, sort of.  Moved to Jacksonville Florida, Kind of got tired of the shag and all of its newfags about 4 years ago. Realized it wasn't the newfags.  It was me. I was going to meltdown like derka or taz. So, I left the internet for a while  Worked on me a lot.  Not sure, maybe I was just growing up.  I lurk here a bit, off and on.  But mostly I keep myself busy these days between work and hobbies.

Yeah, plenty of us are familiar with him.

They should do a movie about him.

This movie is all sorts of kick ass. Surprised there wasn't a thread about it somewhere on here.

Sun came up it was another day
And the sun went down you were blown away
Why’d you let go of your guitar
Why’d you ever let it go that far
Drunken Angel

Could’ve held on to that long smooth neck
Let your hand remember every fret
Fingers touching each shiny string
But you let go of everything
Drunken Angel
Drunken Angel
You’re on the other side
Drunken Angel
You’re on the other side

Followers would cling to you
Hang around just to meet you
Some threw roses at your feet
And watch you pass out on the street
Drunken Angel

Feed you and pay off all your debts
Kiss your brow taste your sweat
Write about your soul your guts
Criticize you and wish you luck
Drunken Angel
Drunken Angel
You’re on the other side
Drunken Angel
You’re on the other side

Some kind of savior singing the blues
A derelict in your duct tape shoes
Your orphan clothes and your long dark hair
Looking like you didn’t care
Drunken Angel

Blood spilled out from the hole in your heart
Over the strings of your guitar
The worn down places in the wood
That once made you feel so good
Drunken Angel
Drunken Angel
You’re on the other side
Drunken Angel
You’re on the other side
