I've been paying attention to this current timeline.  I would be unsurprised if we end up with Pope Beelzebub PuppyKiller the first.

From what I've read, he said that being gay is not a CRIME, but still a SIN.

In the interview the pope said, "We are all children of God, and God loves us as we are and for the strength that each of us fights for our dignity. Being homosexual is not a crime. It is not a crime."

Then, he voiced an objection to that statement, followed by how he would respond to that objection, saying, "'Yes, but it is a sin.' Fine, but first let us distinguish between a sin and a crime."

1000%. The most progressive pope of my lifetime for sure (and I'm not a Catholic so don't have a dog in the fight as they say) and I am not sure of the catholic politics or who is the odds on favorite to win, etc., but just wanted to clarify his point because it's a pretty huge distinction.

I'm thinking they may pick someone that goes hard in the opposite direction and digs in with the hatred, prejudice, and hellfire that we all remember from our youth.

Distance from Pope Francis' "well of course all this stuff about hell is bullshit created to scare you into showing up and paying your dues" type of logic.

Francis appointed 2/3 of these guys.  I seriously doubt they're prone to swing into far right puppy killer land.

According to Wikipedia, cardinals have to be under 80 to vote for the next guy. Only 135 of 252 meet that requirement (54%). That's kinda nuts to me.

The prophecy of the Popes is over which means that we should be seeing the arrival of the Antichrist.

Donald Trump's etymology: Donald (World Ruler) John (God has been gracious) Trump (Drum or Trumpet depending on your source)

What does that all mean?  Nothing really, but it's ominous for sure.

I bet theres a non European, non America/Latin American pope next, reflecting the growth of the church in Africa and Asia.

He blessed same sex couples in a union and gave the caveat that it was okay as long as it was clear it a) wasn't endorsing it as a marriage and b) allowing for the blessing just the same as you would give to any sinner that asks for it.

The facts as I understand it, and curious to hear where @Ghost of LLgot his information, was that Pope Francis held up homosexuality as a sin (didn't reform that) and actually was criticized by progressives for not being a real progressive (reforming) versus upholding conservative catholic values but with different lanugage (or weasel words if you are less forgiving).

Maybe it's incremental gains and his softening of language might be the first step to reform and that is part of his legacy when we look back 100 years from now and Catholics change their views.

Possibly, but they could see the far right movement globally as a chance to restock the flock.

This coming age of suffering once the leadership tanks the US and world economies is ripe for this stuff taking advantage. Religion always does it's best work during times of suffering when people are mentally defeated and emotionally vulnerable. It's why people always become super Christian or Islamic in prisons.

Of course, lost on them will be the reality this kind of garbage is exactly what led to the tanking of the economies in the first place.

There's reasons such nonsense has persisted for thousands of years.

I just counted up Wikipedia's list. Here's who appointed the 135 Cardinals eligible to vote. It says the rules say only 120 can participate in the conclave, not sure how they make the cut.

Francis = 108

Benedict = 22

JP2 = 5

basically this.  he started a ball rolling one way in a giant organization that was always rolling in the opposite direction.  major in the sense that it was entirely new and opposite of what any that prided themselves on being doctrinal purists would say.  incremental in that there is still not going to be a rainbow flag hung in the vatican for a few thousand more years.

Yeah, I guess I was looking at it more from a global HQ perspective, as I'd love to get taxes aligned with revenues and not just real estate, but I'm a tax loving fool.

As always, progress is slow. Which angers people who want things done faster. Which usually leads to massive backlash

There were a lot of current  Catholics that didn't like the direction of the Pope. Based on my admittedly limited engagement with them they felt it was a move to appeal to a broader public. I'm inclined to agree with them in broad strokes. The horrific pedophile scandals and cover ups, crossed with changing mindsets/progressive ideology has seen a big decrease in Catholic growth and even loss in the more liberal countries.

At the end of the day, all religions are about putting butts in seats and coins in the coffers while expanding their message, whatever that "message" might be.

While broad attendance/faith numbers are good, countries in Africa and South America don't bring the big dollars in global influence North American/European engagement does.

Its probably a discussion for another thread, but to keep it relevant, I think the Catholic Church knows if it wants to grow it needs a "moderate" as it relates to progressive ideas.

But... what the fuck do I know about what goes on behind closed doors in the Vatican.

Pretty much, the same bs as "hate the sin, love the sinner." He may have been softer than prior popes in his approach but nothing drastic has changed much to the underlying doctrines. I don't infer that his appointments will want to keep the church on even that vaguely progressive track. I truly believe the world trend will continue and the next pope will be a hardliner who will confirm strict construction of traditional catholic doctrine and will align, directly or indirectly, with the new wave of authoritarians, at least in prodominantly christian countries. The fact that the US Conference of Bishops is supporting Oklahoma's attempt to create a public catholic charter school using public funds is disgusting to me, truly revolting.

I’d settle for being able to tax the property of churches.  They don’t need to be dissolved, they just need to pay their fair share by statute - ‘cause they sure won’t do it voluntarily. I’m not talking Catholics, I’m talking to everybody - the Joel Osteens and Billy Bob little church of the woods.

No problem with this.  So long as you tax the property of all secular nonprofits as well.  Many won't be able to afford it.

I know a lot of Catholics from around the country.  None of them liked this Pope for his liberation theology views, including his condescending lectures on Muslim migrants while hiding behind walls and massive wealth,  his failures dealing with pedophiles in the Church, and his kowtowing to China.

They would prefer a Pope like JP2.  Many believe allowing married priests would solve much of their issues caused by celibacy.

Seems to me that priests should be allowed to marry, but that doesn’t have anything to do with the whole pedophile problem the Church has.

I'll agree with the characterization of "weasel words."  There was some ambiguity in his statements.  I think it mostly fell down along the lines of being gay isn't a sin, but sex outside marriage is a sin (both heterosexual and homosexual).  But he also pointed out that surrounding facts and circumstances may lessen the culpability for sinful behavior, even to the point of zero.  So if you're in a homosexual union that has been blessed by the Church, does that lessen your culpability for having sex within that union to the point of zero?

He left that pretty vague, but implied that that might be the case.

So who the fuck knows?

“It’s not a crime. Yes, but it’s a sin,” he said. “Fine, but first let’s distinguish between a sin and a crime.”

“It’s also a sin to lack charity with one another,” he added.
