BritneyFest (and that other racing shit) weather:

Saturday:  Rain here/there but probably not a washout.  Take your rubbers. But you should be fine.  Concert (Jupiter Mars or whoever) should be okay.
Sunday: absolutely fucking beautiful - a sunny, great say sammiched in between two periods of rain (and rain is coming again next week).

Another pro tip:  look for the seam that nobody else sees.  When they're all turning to the left, you fake left...then go right.

Sunday at least looks like it's gonna be a nice day.

What are the rules regarding LCRA flooding?

Lake Travis is fucked

Lake Austin is safe because rich

Townlake fucked

Bastop fucked

(also how the fuck do I stop the double spacing on Surly?)

Here is a article about the restaurant (old yacht Harbor Marina - now Sail-n-Ski)  They built the kitchen in sections on trailers so that they could be yanked out in a flood like this.  https://communityimpact.com/austin/weather/2018/10/17/lake-travis-restaurant-7-feet-underwater-owner-prepared-flooding-was-inevitable/

My wife's family lake house will be flooded today.  At least the first level garage and 'basement' areas.  They recently put it on the market and it's completely empty so the timing couldn't be more perfect if you are to look at it as a glass half full event.  On the other hand, my BIL and I spent several hours last night helping an elderly lake neighbor move his tools and shop equipment into storage.  We only put a dent in it.  He's going to lose a lot.  He has a 1950's jeep restoration project that will be completely submerged.  We offered to help try and get it to higher ground but he wanted to concentrate on his shop.  Sad.

Newly enlisted reporting on first week of bootcamp to dad:  "so we went up for our first parachute jump, but I was scared.  Biggest baddest sergeant came up to me and said, 'boy I got a 10 inch dick, and if you don't get your ass outta that door NOW, I'm going to shove it up your ass.'"

Dad: "so, did you jump?"

Newly enlisted:  "Well, yeah!  At first, but then I got used to it."

That massive rain out by San Angelo.  Any way it feeds into this stuff?

I saw a video this morning...there are 2 flood gates open on Lake Nazworthy....that will be in OH  Ivie,  and then there is this stuff around Ballinger which is headed to OH Ivie as well.

LCRA just tweeted that they will not need to open up the additional four gates today, but may need to later on.

Makes sense. No idea why they said this yesterday. They are near their max release of 30,000 cfs for the given lake level.

Lubbock proper is in the Brazos river basin, but just a few miles south of that is in the Colorado basin, so we will see that water eventually too.

No....it has 3 Reserviors to get through before it gets to Buchanan...JB Thomas (Snyder) EV Spence (Robert Lee) and OH Ivie east of Eden....

My guess is they didn't know how much more rainfall was going to enter the system yesterday, so they prepared for the worst case.  Luckily there wasn't as much rain as could have been.

Yeah I definitely think they were thinking more rain. Doesn't seem to be as bad (at least right now) as they predicted. However, they could be letting some water out (maybe 1 or 2 more flood gates) while we have some down time to get some capacity back. Can't have fast moving water in Lake Austin, oh the horror.

wut?  As of 10am it was at 701.

My fault I assumed my page was refreshed — it had been doing it automatically. It’s over 701 actually. But the rise has tapered off for sure.

“There’s been a lack of maintenance on the dam for the last 15 years,” Dennis Hipp, a recently-retired Austin Energy employee tells StateImpact Texas. “It’s steadily gotten worse and it’s to the point now where it’s going to start doing some damage. [Both] upstream and down.”

But by all mean, let's keep spending tens of millions on fucking bike lanes.

Yeah, it was a precautionary CYA move because people on Lake Austin and Town Lake (sorry Lady Bird) would have screamed bloody murder if they hadn't been warned.  Well, they would even if they had but still.

The article is from 2013.... but it doesn't look like much has changed

The dam is operated by Austin Energy, the city power utility, but it is not a hydroelectric dam and generates no electrical power; since the Holly Power Plant's closure [ in 2007] the dam has received little maintenance.

Congrats everyone for all the hard work.  We did it!  2007 is our bitch.

2007 was the highest I've personally witnessed, so this hits close to home.

Worked on the lake 2007, was fun cruising out on the lake checking on peoples docks. No one was out there save for the game wardens. 91 had the cray as well.

Anyone think formula 1 race this weekend has anything to do w/ LCRA not opening the other gates, so they don't flood 1st street & mess w/ DT on a big weekend?

Yep.  I'd be shocked if OH Ivie ever reaches the level required to release.  So no need to worry about rains in the Concho or Upper Colorado basins.  Just east of Eden-El Dorado-Rock Springs.

Hyodromet map illustrates the basins, for those not familiar:

OH Ivey now 21% full:

Yes, I knew it was old. I remembered the article and someone up thread (bolverk maybe?) brought it up so I went and found it.

As much politics as the LCRA is usually associated with going back for years, it wouldn't surprise me.
