Grade Rick Barnes's final seven seasons at Texas.

You were gloating and dunking on people all day yesterday.  This board is like 90/10 pro Barnes.   Unlike beard I still root for the guy

Exactly

Don’t talk shit when a 2 seed makes the sweet 16 if you can’t take some shit when Rick Barnes once again fails to outperform his seed.

Take some advice from this guy who posted the other day….

I love Rick.  Don’t know him personally but he an Augie seemed to have honor.
Barnes was a Bible thumping hypocrite whose "spiritual advisor" was casting far too long of a shadow in the locker room. The timing of his exit was good for all parties.

Tell us how you really feel.   Why is spiritual advisor in quotes? 😂

Another year another Rick Barnes exit in March

Death, taxes, and Rick Barnes Ls in March. It's nice to have things we can rely on in these uncertain times

Thanks for the money, Rick. Nice doing business with you as always!

thats the entirety of tennessee basketball’s history before rick barnes was hired. barnes has done a tremendous job taking this program to new heights, and the job he’s done this season, taking a thin team with very little size or shooting, and winning 30 games and going to the E8 is just emblematic of the job he’s done there.

his teams are greater than the sum of its parts. from one elite 8 in school history, to now three straight trips to the S16 including back to back E8’s. really happy for Coach Barnes, he’s doing a great job there, and i just that he has 3-4 more years in him. HOF lock for sure, and a great man. happy for his success, and wish him nothing but continued success.

and for anyone wondering, barnes’s tennessee team went 7-3 in march with wins over alabama, auburn, kentucky, and ucla. oh and Texas too. someone was conspicuously absent from this thread while all of that was happening though. weird!

That was not hypocrisy but penance for all the cussing’ and philandering. Either way you look at it he was a shittier coach during that time.

It’s funny reading the comments from posters crapping on Barnes for what he’s done at Tennessee when Texas just hired a coach that they’re betting on to resurrect the success that he had a decade ago.

You do realize it's all in good fun and completely based on his final years of underachievement at Texas, right?

I mean most don’t consider Sean an A hire.  But he had a better wining percentage and more conference titles than Rick.

The PAC 12 was a soft basketball conference over the last twenty years of its existence. Arizona was the last team to win it all and that was nearly 30 years ago. I wouldn’t hang my hat on conference titles in that weak ass conference.

Rick Barnes has a ceiling, it is not luck, it is not talent, it is his coaching. The same glaring flaws 20 years ago are still there today, there is no way to explain it other than stubbornness.

Sean Miller better be more open minded to learn from his failures.

Sean has also been wire tapped by the FBI more than Barnes also.

And had an assistant take a mini vacation at Club Fed. Speaking of, I hope Sean sends Book Richardson a Christmas card and nice fruit basket every holiday season for taking the fall.

dude he’s a HOF coach who is the GOAT at two different major conference programs, and he’s going to retire with 900+ wins, making him top 10 all time in d-1 coaching history. he’s also coached and developed an insanely impressive roster of all americans, league poy’s, NPOYs, and nba players, including mvps, title winners, and gold medalists. his ceiling, which he’s hitting, is higher than 99.9% of d-1 coaches and yet you’re in here talking about him like he’s fran mccaffery.

I don't disagree, he is a great coach, but for fucks sakes I want to win a national title in basketball, you know how disappointing it is to start a season and know for a fact that it will simply won't happen? His philosophy is deeply flawed, his football doppleganger is Brian Ferentz. And Barnes has had NBA all star talent

uh, wrong. and beyond that, just an oddly cynical (or possibly/probably uninformed) take. what you call a “glaring flaw” and “stubbornness” is literally just the natural give and take that essentially every single elite defensive program faces: it’s really really hard to be elite on both sides of the ball. it’s that simple.

IMG_8247.thumb.jpeg.5633cbe84c8692c27e4bc4eb537b0c11.jpeg

five straight years with a top 5 defense, four straight years with a tourney win, theee straight trips to the S16, two straight trips to the elite 8 (tripling he number of e8 trips in program history) and his team lost today when his two all american perimeter players went ice cold on wide open catch and shoot looks. and yet here you are in here bitching about barnes and condemning his “stubbornness”, when in reality this roster of his should never have won 30 games, should never have featured two all americans, and should never have been an elite 8 team.

here you are, some guy who doesn’t even watch the sport, who couldn’t even name two tennessee players with a gun to your head, totally ignorant of the amazing job that barnes has done with this team, and you’re in here on the last day of his season bitching about what is undeniably an outstanding coaching job by barnes and one of the best seasons in tennessee basketball history. just great stuff all around.

Mack Brown has nine fewer wins than Nick Saban, yet there's a major difference in those two.

Like Mack, Rick doesn't win when it matters. At least Mack won a title. Did you want to keep him?

To be fair to the poster he also has horrifically bad takes about football, current events and politics so there’s a consistency on his bad hoops takes that’s laudable.

It took Mack 9 extra seasons to get there too.

When I think Rick Barnes, I think Mack Brown without the title and runner-up finish. Lots of wins, few significant titles.

We're not a blue blood basketball school, so the 1st 10 years of Barnes' tenure here were awesome. Then the last several years at Texas happened and I didn't give two shits about him staying. Now that he's at Tennessee, I don't wish HIM ill, but Tennessee and their shitstain fans can fuck right off. Also, fuck Kelvin Sampson and Houston.

this whole page is a bunch of guys who never post here crushing rick barnes for having one fewer title than tom izzo and the same amount as mark few, kelvin sampson, bruce pearl, etc.

Bill Self, Scott Drew, Rick Pitino, John Calipari, Tom Izzo, and Dan Hurley.

that’s every active coach with a title. oh the horror of not being on that list. i wonder how many titles barnes would have if he cheated as hard as self, drew, pitino, and cal. 🤔

Ok I already explained it before to you but you seem to unwilling to listen (and have a reputation for it)

Physical defense -> waste of time in march (note I don't mean hustle, hustle is extremely important), time and time again the whistles are swallowed during the regular season but not during the tournament  and all of a sudden the game turns into a FT contest which leads us to flaw #2

Barnes refuses to prioritize FT-> This is the single most important shot in college, it is not even close, it is the only reliable way to shorten deficits, and only reliable way to increase leads. Maybe in the NBA the 3 pt shot is more valuable but only because pros are really good at FT negating the advantage.

You need to stop shooting 3s when cold -> yes he stopped doing this in the 2nd half vs Houston and surprise surprise they more than doubled their first half score. But by then it was so fucking laughably late

My dream coach:

Runs a smart defense, switching on the perimeter to avoid screens, lots of energy but at the same time does not do those useless double blocks (see RT).

FT obviously, maybe have a merchant or two.

Runs a modern offense with off ball movement to create spacing, it can be the triple post or the motion offense, BUT the coach is not afraid to have clutch players go iso and run their hot hands.

Give this coach talent and he wins multiple national titles
