You're such an idiot. So you admit you have lower standards for the basketball program. No wonder you still rub it out to Barnes.

That is his main problem I think he is over the moon happy with EE finishes, which is fine Barnes can give you a million of those, I just want more, that is really the only difference.

Oh for fuck's sake. Barnes is exactly who his record says it is: A very good coach with some seasons that wildly exceed expectations mixed with a few too many WTF results.

He cleans up well, his programs avoided major stink, and he covered up his earlier personal foibles well enough to avoid much scrutiny.

He's made a shit load of money raising the bar at football schools. But he's a hall of very good type who'll make the HOF due to a long career.

It's also laughable that people think Barnes has not had all world talent, this is Barnes historical best NBA team starting 5: TJ (career was cut short due to injuries), PJ, KD, LA, TT. This team could have won an NBA title around the 2010s (assuming they all played together in their prime of course).

Of active coaches only Cal has done better, it is so laughable.

It’s funny reading the comments from posters crapping on Barnes for what he’s done at Tennessee when Texas just hired a coach that they’re betting on to resurrect the success that he had a decade ago.

Oh look it’s you again making shitty posts. Go suck Fertitta’s dick cougar high boy.

lol so now we’re crushing barnes for not living up to UT *football* expectations. that’s hilarious.

lol no

99% of us will be plum happy if Miller replicates Barnes' 1st 10 years - 3 Top 10 finishes and 1 Final Four. That was badass. Barnes was badass those years, the best Texas coach EVARRRRR!!!!! But his last several years were pedestrian at best. You said it, it was time to move on.

Most of us here have a higher opinion of Barnes than Mack even though Mack accomplished MUCH more as far as Top 10 finishes, titles, etc. And that's because our expectations for basketball are MUCH less than football.

It's not difficult, he was good (great for us) for a decade, then he wasn't. Thanks for those years, Rick. But there's a reason he doesn't have a title and why none of the blue bloods have called him.

Nah not me, that is actually a worst case scenario, it took forever to get rid of Barnes because he did make those SS and EE early.

Good enough to not get fired, never good enough to win a title.

Barnes has a style and is consistently successful with it. Defense and crashing the offensive glass. His best shot at a title is recruiting an all world point guard (you know who I'm talking about) and great shooters. The problem is that if those guys are also great defenders and rebounders then they're one and done or too expensive to have multiple.

he doesn’t have a title because it’s an incredibly difficult tourney to win, and he turned down kentucky while at Texas and turned down UCLA while at Tennessee. the blue bloods did come calling, and he turned them down.

anyone who thinks that it’s logical to crush a coach and deem him a loser because he’s never won the most difficult tournament in sports is either an idiot, they have an axe to grind, or both.

ive said this before, but ill never forget walking into phog allen field house in 2022 and seeing a whooping FOUR, count em, FOUR national titles in the history of the school. the school whose worst coach ever is the guy who invented the sport. that school. even with their fifth win since then, KU, a bona fide blue blood, wins the title once out of every 17 tries. that’s with every advantage, all of the best coaches, and plenty of cheating as well. but yeah, let’s crush a guy who only coaches at football schools because his ceiling is constantly going to the S16 and fielding competitive teams every year. 🙄

Or it's all in fun because he has a reputation for flaming out in March and stalled badly at the end of his tenure at Texas.

Rich Barnes is the farthest thing from a loser.

I still have a fondness for ole Rick. He just cost me my shot at $1300 because I stupidly predicted he'd make the FF.

But come on, man. You can't do this:Screenshot_20250330_124113_X.thumb.jpg.0ac72719ae9739482741c70f14748896.jpg

It makes it so, so easy to break out the old jokes.

If you ever want to see good perimeter defense, not just fake defense that can get you fried by guards hitting threes just look at these two

Lonzo was a #2 pick but Aggie Caruso was undrafted, that is the type of players that should be recruited , not just physical guards that can handle posts ups, you need to have players that are SMART, or can be coached to be that smart, that is the key to good defense, not a flaky defense that just relies on misses and rebounds.

rick barnes has coached tennessee to a top 5 defense for five straight years, and two of this year’s four finalists for the national defensive POY are volunteers, both of whom are smart players. in fact zakai ziegler is one of the smartest players i’ve ever seen. you don’t do this:

at 5’8” without being one damn intelligent player.

Seeing some of his highlights

You can see why he is not as good a defender as the other two, being extremely in your face can be good 1 on 1 defense but that is not what I am talking about, if you see the video I posted it is two guards shutting down THE ENTIRE TEAM,

What if Ziegler is screened? I am not attacking the player per se if you could show me highlights of where he is a great switch defender I would appreciate it, but I am talking about the creme de la creme two guards that just makes the opposing team cry, for cheap. That is the type of defense that can win in March, AND guards well against the achilles heel of ultra talented teams, the 3pt shot.

Again, Barnes doing less with more. KD says "hi!" Aggy should hire him.

Rick Barnes is a choking dog and moron in March. Izzo is the God of March madness.
Rick Barnes team was down 11 or so with 6 minutes left.
Michigan state currently down 11 with 5:30.

This is an argument in maybe two heads on surly.  Yours and derkas.  Izzo is a couple of levels up from Ricky

I mean even if you ignore Izzo's National championship and Final Fours the level of NBA talent that went through Michigan State is laughable compared to what Barnes has had, I mean fucking seriously... coach K, and Cal, those are the only two 21st century coaches I can think of that have had superior NBA talent to Barnes, that is it, Bill Self? no, Roy Williams? no, Boehim got his NC with his one and done (at our expense). Yet we were supposed to be happy with an EE ceiling? nah fuck that.

Mack has turned out to be a very unlikable fellow.     I happen to like Rick but yea I guess he has some character flaws

You do realize it's all in good fun and completely based on his final years of underachievement at Texas, right?

Exactly. With the exception of one person, everyone else is just having a laugh and blowing off steam from our frustrations with Rick’s final years here

If Tennessee won yesterday I think all of us would have tipped our hat to Rick and said congrats/good job. But he didn’t. Because he’s Rick Barnes

Theres only one person here taking it all seriously and calling other people “idiots” and “losers.” Everyone else is making lighthearted jokes about a silly game played by 18 to 23 year olds.

I'll always be Rick Barnes fan. He stopped by our football tailgate early one game day morning as we were setting up. He was on his way to the swim center to watch them practice and talk to coach Reese. He talked with me and a buddy for a few minutes, critiqued our set up and was a nice as could be.
