Well, I'm a sucker for "going west to the new world" type endings.

Wasn't near as good as the going west ending of Godless, but still.

Although made much more depressing by the "Go further north" destiny of you know who.

When all is said and done, if it has magic and dragons, I'm not going to give it more than a B+.  I've got some weird visceral dislike of of these gimmicks.  Not sure why.  Maybe I'm just an unimaginative heartless bastard.

this pretty much describes my perspective in general, but i really liked how this series was initially based in reality (though it took place in a made-up world).  the good parts were characters and political and history and family - not fantasy and effects.

through the seasons, every time it wandered into wizards and warlocks and "magic and dragons" i lost interest, and waited for the other storylines.  eventually, i was just pot committed.

I don’t have a problem with a world where magic exists and dragons and undead are part of the magic.

But figure out the laws of magic, stick to them, and don’t use them as deux ex machina over and over.

Have the people know or learn the laws of magic and make choices based on their knowledge or lack of.

You have to work to make the fantastic believable, and they just used it as shortcuts.

wtf is this shit. I’m sure it’s something regarded.

im back in the thread cuz im starting a new watch with someone who has never seen it, my mom. she’s in town for a couple weeks to visit her grandkids.

started 2 days ago, Ned’s head just went bye bye,  she’s invested in the show. I like being back in it answering all the questions of who is who and what is what. We watch it together with my lady, who is also a first time watcher.

I also got my mom intoBOB when I’m away for day. She loves that too. ( she’s a veteran her self, so she def gets that show much easier )

prolly put her on generation kill or pacific right after, she actually did a tour in Iraq, so hoping I don’t see her gettin ptsd or anything.

Great show that got way out over its skis when the source material ran out.  “Hardhome” in Season 5 (awesome episode) is right before the show started to wobble, and everything from the end of “Eastwatch” in Season 7 to the end of the series was a bloated mess.  Thanks Fat Man!

I probably need a rewatch to ultimately pass judgment on its place in TV history, but Seasons 1 through 4 is great television.

The complex Arya and the Hound relationship was probably the story thread I enjoyed most in that whole series.

Everybody talked about the Red Wedding the next day. It was hard to find someone who did not watch that - or pretend to have watched it.

I also enjoyed the arc of Sansa morphing from a naive, non-serious young woman victim into the gifted bad-ass power player she became.

I feel bad for the actor who played Joffrey.  He was so damn good in that role that everybody hated him, and it probably led to a lack of future roles.

And while I (like everyone) hated the ending, the marked absence of sand-snake lesbian porn was also very disappointing.

Finally, Bronn was my favorite character.

I recently did a rewatch and it’s still one of the greatest TV series ever for me - I just have to delete season eight from memory. I think it’s holds up through season six - last two episodes- Battle of the Bastards and Winds of Winter were excellent. I can see myself watching it every ten years or so.

Season eight was Luka trade level treason - and I completely understand people who hate it for that reason.
