UW doesn't give price breaks on out of state tuition like Nebraska and Alabama  do (among others).   They don't have to.

In doing some research, there’s a decent amount of scholarships/financial assistance for out-of-state students, but throw on room and board and you’re still all-in for about $40K per year.

$40k, holy shit.  I basically went to grad school there for free (with free labor provided to the school).  But I rode my bike along the Burke-Gilman to class, and walked to the football games.

Yep.  And I paid $300-400/month for rent.

My daughter's finalists were UT and UW. She was offered scholarships that made UW cost the same or even a little less than UT. So UW definitely competes for students they want.

Our oldest is up there now as a SW engineer at Amazon. We are heading up there sometime late summer to spend some time with him and explore the city some more. We went summer 2019 to Seattle and Olympic. Loved it and can't wait to go back.

Booked a Dec getaway, long weekend before Xmas for my wife's birthday. Cute little Norwegian town called Poulsbo, just north of Bainbridge Island. We stumbled on it during our last visit to ONP and fell in love with it over a couple hours. Viking Brew Coffee is across the street from the condo and 4 breweries within walking distance.

Poulsbo is nice.  Have a buddy who moved over there from Shoreline when he retired.   Initially he hated not being closer to downtown Seattle but after they got settled and started venturing out to the neighboring towns and inlets he loved it.   They still go into town but they catch the ferry from Bainbridge on foot and enjoy the day trips.

That's right across the water from where I live- cute town, and a really short trip by boat to downtown Seattle...

I love Poulsbo, cool little Viking town and the Indian Casino there was really chill and overlooking the sound as well. The ferry ride from downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island is pretty damn perfect.

Flight and hotel booked. Will be there August 4-8. Would’ve liked one more day, but schedules with the ex didn’t line up. Staying in the Queen Anne area, not far from the Space Needle. Will spend half a day strolling around U Dub so my daughter can check it out, visit MoPop, take a morning hike somewhere out of town, and figure out the rest.

Awesome.  Great time of year to be there, although it could be 'hot' and not a lot of places have AC.  It will be light out till after 9pm.

While in Queen Anne, be sure to visit Kerry Park on Highland Ave for your postcard view of Seattle.  It won't take long, but if you're close, you might want to visit several times (sunrise, sunset, nighttime).

I don't know what shape The Ave is in these days, but it's UW's version of the Drag.  I think it's been cleaned up quite a bit, so maybe it isn't as cool, but it's still part of campus life.

Sit in the Quad for a while, then sit in Red Square for a while.

Last couple times up there I have stayed in Queen Anne.  The Queen Anne Beerhall was right next to my hotel so I strolled in.  Fashioned after a german beer hall it was a great place to catch a game and a few large beers.  Not necessarily a destination spot but if you are in the area not a bad place to kill a couple hours.

Two lesser known QA spots that are easy drives (or walks, if you're staying in upper QA are Bhy Kracke (seriously) and the 5th and Lynn overlook (north and east, over Lake Union and towards UW).

Glad to see this current.  Just picked up some super cheap flights on Alaska for me and my 15 and 12 year old.   $650 for all three of us Non-stop and inside the two week window.   June 19-23.  Three full days plus a half day on Wed the 23rd since our return isn't until 6pm.  Revenge travel 2021 in full effect.  Looks like tons to do with museums. outdoor tours and also take in a Mariner game in the vaccinated section FTW.  Staying right across from the needle.   My kids love good food so some new food recos would be great and I will read all this but I'm sure some places have closed.

If you haven’t been, take your kids on the Seattle Underground tour. It’s a fascinating look at the historical town of Seattle preserved under the current city.

Recall having a fantastic seafood meal at Shaker + Spear.

https://www.shakerandspear.com/menus/

I’m taking my kids there for a long weekend in early August. Would appreciate reading a review of your trip and how the city has been opening up.

I saw that underground one on Viator so I just signed up for that.  Good reco.  Also found out that Seattle has a free walking tour group.  I've done those all over the world and they are usually great.

I need a nice place for fathers day dinner.  That Shaker looks like a good candidate for that or another nights dinner.

We are across from the Space needle so that is definitely on the list as well as a museum or two.

The only time I was there about 6 years ago they had one of those uber touristy duck boat tours.    Looks like its gone now.   But there are some other boat tours.

Our flight arrives at 9pm.  Is the raillink into downtown safe at that hour?

MoPoP museum is pretty fun. Chihuly Gardens at the foot of the Needle is also enjoyable. Underground Tour is great.

Agreed, and I’ll take my kids there again on our upcoming trip. The Chihuly Gardens exceeded my expectations. And MoPop usually has great exhibits. On my last visit they had a cool Pearl Jam exhibit.

The Needle seems touristy, but if you go on a nice day it’s a lot of fun to grab a beer and  take in some beautiful Seattle views.

I don't know if you guys have a car or will be in Fremont but the Fremont Troll is another touristy yet fun thing to go look at under the Aurora Bridge.

We also like Gas Works Park which is in Fremont as well. Olympic Sculpture Park should be right near where you're staying which is an enjoyable walk.

Did not plan on renting a car.  Figured there was enough to do in city for 3.5 days to keep us busy with tours.   I remember the duck boat took us through Freemont (fremont rocks).  I did see a van tour that visited the troll and a bunch of other spots.   Might do that as a way to see a bit of everything

Definitely plenty to keep you around town. Taking the ferry to Bainbridge Island is always fun.

Taking the kids on this ferry in a couple of weeks as I did it a 2 years ago for work and loved it. Hopefully the wait isn't too crazy as it seems there have been some long delays at times lately. Going on a Sunday morning, so no idea if that will be better or worse.

Seconding the idea for the Museum of Pop or whatever it's called now.   City Pass is also a good idea.   The day/night pass to the Space Needle is worth the whole price.

Go to Etta's down by Pike Place.   GREAT crab cakes and steaks.   Lowell's for breakfast in Pike Place for a "can't be beat" view of Elliott Bay.  Also, Beecher's at Pike Place for lunch.   Dungeness Crab Mac and Chees or the Crab Grilled Cheese Sandwich.   Do it.

There's a market in Pike Place.  We have ALWAYS bought some stuff for dinner their and cooked in the condo we rent.

I'll 2nd Lowell's. Always had a great meal there and the view is spectacular. If you're around one, Portage Bay Cafe is really good as well for breakfast. There's one over by the UW campus. Dungeness Crab Omelettes at both places.

Pike Place in general is great. Yeah, touristy as all get out but it's still really fun. The market will the different types of seafood and flowers is unique. The Gum Wall is good for a chuckle.

Bainbridge Island Ferry is great. I've never spent time on Bainbridge Island but there's food and shops right as you get off the ferry. Or just walk back on the ferry going back to downtown and admire the view.

Yeah we pretty much do Lowell's for breakfast every single day.

Poulsbo is about a 20 minute drive from the ferry that is a pretty cool little viking town as well. Also really enjoyed my time at the https://www.clearwatercasino.com/. Very clean and relaxing smaller casino right on the sound.

The light rail will get you from the airport to the Westlake stop in downtown in about 40 mins or so.

Plenty of good tried and true recommendations here. Having lived there for almost 4 years, I found the best food options to be in Cap Hill. Spinasse, Bateau, Terra Plata, Mamnoon, Stateside, Altura, Momiji, and many more. For bars, Foreign National or Canon are awesome. Rein House isn’t anything special unless you just really love Bocce Ball, IMO.

Other spots of note are Wa’z in Belltown, Homer in Beacon Hill, and Sawyer + Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard. You should head to Ballard for their Sunday farmer’s market if you’re able to. It’s probably the best market outside of Pike’s Place and there is plenty to see and do while checking out the tents. Mini cinnamon donuts are a must.

@RichUT Is it safe for me and my 14 son and 12 daughter at 930pm?  or should I just get an uber at that hour.  Kids will be hungry so I found what looks like a somewhat famous diner near my hotel that would be a great spot for late night burger for them.

I looked at Mariner tickets.   Tickets are a plenty.   They have a vaccinated section which would be good for me but my kids would have to show a negative test.   N0t sure I want to pay $100 per kid just to sit in that section.  Might just get some cheap seats but in the social distance section but they are in pods of even tickets.  So I'd have to buy 4.

I literally rode the train for the first time last week, and can’t speak to a night trip. That said, it was clean and in good shape. It’s also stupid cheap ($3 per person each way). I didn’t a get any sort of vibe that it’d be unsafe.
